Well......... <<<<<<<<thinking>>>>>>>>>
My wife purchased mine / ours for a 10th anniversary gift / reward. The reason I decided on a Rolex (as my gift) is because they are the finest timepieces with the best reputations for the money in history. With that said, I like um!!!!!!

To answer the question, I haven't yet. I can still remember by first watch and wearing it. A Bradley Mickey Mouse watch. Stamped Swiss Made on the back, I think its manual wind. Got it when I was very young. It doesn't work, but I'm going to get it repaired and let my kids wear it on occasion. Had a few others, my next decent watch was Citizen Aqualand (1994?) dive watch. Only dove with it a few times. The rubber straps both broke but I think I found a place to buy them. Bought a Titanium Citizen Eco-drive in 2001? and stopped wearing it when I bought TAG-Heuer aquaracer last spring. Liked the look and feel of a quality SS watch. Now I've got my sights set on a SS Sub. I'm saving my $ and hope to have it ASAP. I think the quality is what attracts me the most. The intricacy of the movement also appeals to me. I'm sure it will be a watch I will wear for years. It's a shame, my $1200 TAG will be the watch I wear for the shortest time.

They're chick magnets.
Seriously: - The SD has always been the ultimate dive watch to me - Rolex has a long military and special forces relationship - I'm a sucker for the National Geographic adverts - The SD is bar none the best looking watch on the planet as far as I'm concerned - A good salesman was able to plough through my usual frugality - I turned 40 and it was cheaper than the convertible Corvette

I was in the Army in 1986 and was in a unit that deployed a lot so I needed something that was durable, automatic and waterproof. I didn’t want to deal with a dead battery stuck who-knows-where so I started with a Seiko 6309. My Seiko was a good watch but I walked by a Rolex display at a local jewelers one day and was captivated. The watches there were beautiful. No, not just beautiful they were elegant and precise…and expensive. The salesman saw me checking out the display walked over and before I knew it I’d bought a Pepsi GMT. Eventually the GMT got traded in for a Sub but by then I’d caught the bug that has plagued us all…WIS-dom-itis. In the mid 80's Rolex’s weren’t as popular as they are now but I remember walking into my barracks wearing my new GMT. I kept almost tripping myself up because I was looking at my wrist more than the ground in front but didn’t halfway through before one of my buddies spotted my GMT and walked over to check it out. I realized just then that I was a goner and that there was no cure for what ailed me.

Knew nothing about watches except Seiko & Citizen. One day while shopping, my lover bought for me a Cartier (Must 21). First time I stepped into the fancy world of watches. Really loved it but I was so disappointed because it stopped 3 times within 1 yr.
Searched online & asked a few questions before I walked into an AD to grab my TOG. Gave my Cartier away a few months later. Love it every single second since day one & I don't leave home without it regardless of the location or occasion. Got many compliments & memories with it. Less than 2 yrs, I traveled w/ my TOG to Cancun & Vietnam. Hopefully soon, my TOG will be at the Great Wall. |

Simple... that Seadweller has been smiling at me like few other watches ever have and I have yet to own one so for me the expense is justified as it really invokes a feeling of contentment and pleasure that few materiel items I have owned ever will! And they are built like a brick $h!t house...

I bought my Sea Dweller as a lifer and I'm happy to bang it about in daily use. I don't need to baby it to protect its future resale value and I'll get the scratches polished out at services. It's a classic design that's been copied by some very good brands, but having anything but 'Rolex' on that dial wouldn't have been right. At the moment, there's nothing else in the range that really catches my eye (though I did see a Deep Sea in my local and it looks better than the photographs). I might get interested in something vintage. Whatever happens, they'd be for life too.

You can always pass them on to the next generation. At least they'll still be ticking year after year. You can't say that about many others. Besides they are great looking watches.

I'll confess that I didn't particularly care about watches until this ipast year. Before then I had a midsize DJ that my Mother gave me for graduation which I treasured for sentimental value alone. My Brother travels frequently to Thailand and last year he got me a fake GMT. It looked good, it became my favorite watch. Then, I wore it in the pool and found out what a lousy watch it really was. My other small rolex though, still solid and keeping time and I've even scuba dived with it. Then I said, I can afford better, my other family members had high end watches, my wife kept pestering to to upgrade, and now, I'm hooked.

well, this is my first post, and ill start by saying i dont own one yet. Was at the AD today, for the second time, trying to decide between a gmtii and a SD.
that said. Im a fashion monger. I had always wore pocket watches. so wrist watches never excited me. I have gone threw my Tie faze, cufflink faze, and still trying to break myself of my shoe faze. About 6 months ago, It occured to me that the shoes i was wearing cost 4 times what my watch on the wrist did (i got a nice watch for a birthday prestent, and when the pocket watch gave out, i switched over to it, and got used to wearing it, i feel naked without it now..). Anyway, i started looking for a 14k bubbleback from the 40s, but after going to jewlery stors who sold Rolexs, trying to find a vintage one (and having no luck) I stoped and looked at the new ones. I fell in love with the look, and the feel. A good watch is the last thing i need to "complete" my self. It occured to me that i had everything else i wanted, and a watch is all that is left (im a petro head, and am used to spend money on cars like money was the plague and cars were the cure). Rolex was the first and only option that entered my mind. Ive never even considered any other brand. I guess if it is good enough for James bond, it is good enough for me. That, and as someone else said about himself "im a tosser that wants everyone else to think im better than they are." Which is probably true, to some degree, but most of my friends now all wear them, so i shouldnt have anything to worry about. Beecher |

I'm absolutely enthralled with the mechanical nature of the movements and their ability to pretty-darn-closely tell time precisely considering the basics of the movements were created a long-long-long time ago.
Kinda of like wondering 'how did they build the pyramids'; although, not quite that old. The fact that we are in the age of electronics and internet - it's pleasing to see something so simple as a mechanical device elevated to an art form. And that, my friends, is why I bought a Rolex!!!

I've always loved the looks, quality and style of Rolex. I wanted one for 20+ years before I got one. I never thought about the resale value until I started posting here. I will keep buying Rolexes but I will never worry about selling them.

I bought my Rolex as a hobby only. Don't think want to sell it
Unless ... if I already have two Rolex and there's another new model coming which I like very much. Then it will force me to sell one to make my collection down to 2 Rolex again Well, beside hobby, maybe I think Rolex because of their value. It hold value much much more than other watches |

Well I believe a lot of us buy them because we love them. When I got my first in the 80's(a SS Sub) I thought I would never sell it. now 17 Rolex's later I'm finally with the one I have alway's wanted a SS Daytona with black dial. Every time I sold a Rolex I thought I was stepping up or that my taste had change. Some of us can't own 6 or 7 watches so we have to consider what they will sell for down the road for the ultimate one we trully want. Now that I have my ultimate watch I'm wondering what it will bring on a trade in for the white gold Daytona with black dial:)

good thread. think it was 1999 when my dad got me a seiko titanium that started me on appreciating & collecting timepieces.
many watches came and went, only the sea-dweller remained firmly etched in my mind, so at the beginning of this year, i bit the bullet and bought it. never looked back since, i should have bought it earlier. |

I bought a rolex because it has a mystice about it no other watch has. I love the instint reconisability of it. Its long history. the elegance and the rugidness. Its been at the top of mt everest, the bottom of the ocean, to the moon(supposidly) Its seems to have been at the side of man during some of the greatest achievements.

My dad always wore a Sub when I was growing up, so naturally I had to have one someday. Rolex is also, arguably, the most well known watchmaker in the world. Any real collection needs a Rolex in it, lol.

I bought mine because I do a lot of travel sometimes to remote locations to work, and if I spend some time away from home, I want to have something nice with me. What better than a Rolex to travel with you.

I bought my first Rolex, because I had wanted one since High School, when I use to see the President's in the display case of the jewlery store at the malls and a suggested retail of $7,500 dollars. To me it was a symbol of having made it.
