If you were to poll outside of this sample group (watch enthusiasts), you’d find more predictable results......which is telling.

Nope. Big fan and have three of them currently, and have had eight or nine, but there are better watches no matter which metric you use...except perhaps for best all rounder, which it may be.

best is soooooo relative. However, for overall durability, fashion, simplicity and such a wide acceptance of the brand amongst enthusiast and non enthusiast groups it's hard to say that rolex isn't the overall "best" when it comes to averaging out various criteria, but my heart says no...Rolex really doesn't display any real fascination in the haute horologie word aside from a level of manufacture and materials quality standpoint. Id be leaning more towards a company like Lange or PP for the more well known watch companies for that...

Best? Tough word...BUT, no matter what watches I buy, I always come back to my Rolexes. Also, I hate fussy watches, and I've never had any fuss from any of my Rolexes. I can't say the same for my JLC's, Breilting's, etc, etc.

I agree. Although I have not ventured outside the Rolex ecosystem, and hoping to do so soon, other brands’ perceived shortcomings give me serious pause. At my age I have had quite my share of “I-told-you-so” moments it always boils down to a “just get another Rolex” decision.

That's so subjective. My automatic watch totem pole is (in order): accuracy, comfort, durability, beauty, and if it holds it's value. I've had AP's, PP's, and numerous other luxury brands over the years, but Rolex checks all the boxes for me. Hand-made means nothing to me if it's +/- 20 sec/day.
