I’m more and more convinced this is how the ADs and Rolex want it. Rolex AD scarcity due to increased demand, and fixed MSRP gives Rolex an opportunity to take care of the ADs in this subtle/not so subtle way, while helping Rolex stretch the demand out longer term due to the perceived scarcity (keeping steel sports out of the display cases)
Whales who buy higher margin items helps jewelers to optimize their 80/20 scenarios. Hence people constantly telling us there’s no “list”. Fortunately DavidSW etc allows us to pay a small premium (and no sales tax helps) for most long standing references and so much of Rolex is not totally unobtainable with a bit of work. But if you’re going to pay $25k for steel sports watch I still say buy an AP or vintage. |

LOL at all the hypocrites on this thread lambasting the OP. If it wasn’t for capitalism we would not have Rolex or our own money to buy oursvelves Rolexes. Yet everyone is quick to jump on their high horses and throw stones just because the OP is practicing capitalism...
Congrats to you OP. You saw an opportunity and made the most of it. Thanks for sharing your story. |

I have no issue with this transaction, but the post might as well have been titled, “I bought a Sub Date at MSRP!!”

Hublot plus bragging about flipping a Sub = tacky x 2
Did you but an Ed Hardy t shirt afterwards? |

I agree the story was worth sharing. But... I don’t know that it’s hypocrisy for TRF’ers to say a Hublot is a lesser valued watch than a Rolex. I think most of the critical posts are saying it’s a stupid deal. Maybe on THF (The Hublot Forum) this story would be universally applauded...but we are in The Rolex Forum so not a big surprise. But since the Hublot was a gift selected by my brother whom despite my best efforts could not be swayed to buying another watch and that watch was to be purchased regardless the fact that i managed to get it for a massive discount at the end is a win for me especially if and when the vat refund hits. Bitterness and jealousy is strong in this thread. All this ‘Us poor enthusiasts who just want to keep a watch forever and ever and can’t get one at RRP... (small print: we however retain the right to flip at a profit at a later date should we choose to...).
The profit OP made on selling the Sub was likely more than I make in a month but I didn’t feel any pang of jealously towards the OP. The main things I took from this story is that the OP managed to minimise the cost of a celebratory gift for his brother (great!) and that ADs are hiding stock of SS Rolex to help leverage their slow sellers. This gives me hope that my AD could be persuaded to help me out one day. But then I’m more into Day-Dates than SS these days... As a previous poster remarked, it’s the heightened demand causing the shortage, not greys or ADs. Without demand they couldn’t continue. And don’t forget, before the madness started it was often said to be foolish to buy from ADs because greys were selling below retail! Didn’t see many people admonishing anyone for not supporting their impoverished AD back then... |

Eh?? That would be crazy! How much is the Hublot? A sub is about £2k over list from the grey market if someone wants one that badly. That’s a lot cheaper than buying a Hublot they don’t want then losing even more money when they come to sell it. Hublot are like Omega on the secondary market... a financial black hole. Because he bought the Sub at retail & then instantly flipped it for a profit. That’s what he’s referring to by saying the AD basically gave him free money. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I don’t think you’ve done anything that most other people wouldn’t have done, but I agree; the Hublot is crap. Your brother has impeccable taste. Enjoy the Submariner. |

Got no problem with what you did. I would never flip a watch from one of my main ADs but a random AD on vacation? Why not.
That AD knows what they are doing, they were able to move a slow seller by bundling a SS watch, and "only" a sub with date at that. I'm sure they keep a BLRO or Daytona for the PM buyers. ![]() |

It’d be interesting to start a poll to see who is despised more:
1- The overlord manufacturer, whose stranglehold on supply is tantamount to withholding insulin and EpiPens from those who desperately need them. 2- The shady AD, whose “list” is written down on unicorn vellum with a quill dipped in fairy dust ink, & who hordes his preciouSS wares until the perfect bundled transaction is presented to him or her. 3- The evil and profiteering flipper/pusher who’s got the fix that we all want/need, but at what cost?!?? There are teenagers who are forced to drive around in used Sentras and Tercels instead of a new 3 Series BMW because mom or dad succumbed to these monsters, who have the nerve to try to end the day with more money in their pocket than they had when they started. 4- The desperate collector (or fan boy, whatever the case may be) who MUST have the preciouSS at any and all cost (including selling his or her insulin and EpiPens), thus perpetuating this endless cycle of insanity. What’s ccrrrraaaazzzzzzzzzyyyyy about getting a Hublot for more of a discount than what your Dubai dealer offered?
You compare the price you paid to one alternative price and pound your chest while holding the scalp of a Sub C Date in front of a bunch of Rolex fanatics, that is the only crazy thing I see here. I’m happy that you and yours all got what you wanted and congratulations to your brother for his academic achievement. |
