I am in the finance industry, and I was an absolute hater because the black sub is basically a right of passage in our industry. So much so that my company gives a black sub to each person who reaches 1B in sales - an awesome gesture and reward. With that said... I didn’t want to have what every single industry person has.

...until I saw the 116710BLNR. International travel is my passion, and that watch just spoke to me like no other. I hummed and hawed and hated myself for loving it, and then finally broke down and bought one.

Then, I got in a wreck on a Harley and skid for about 350 feet after putting the bike down at 60mph on a California desert highway. The top of the watch was shaved off from asphalt. I took some tweezers and straightened the hands.... it still ticked.

Now I’m a Rolex fanboy.

Totally get it and agree, I wonder if being in the other 10% makes me less of a
douche. Probably not. It’s a nice watch though.

I've always worn them because you can beat the hell out of them and it's OK. Then you send it to the RSC and it comes back like new.

But generally what makes a rolex so special?

Where can I learn more about Rolex? I read a bit about movements but I guess I don't understand it well as I don't know much but want to learn more[/QUOTE]

Check this website out. It was a ton of historical information as well as some interesting and fun articles on specific styles. Look along the right side for different topics or the menu. It gets updated frequently.

When walking in a JLC boutique with my dad (he owns one), he told me "those other brands make great watches, but none of them has the prestige of a Rolex"

I think this says it all.

Prestige and durability. I want to avoid service intervals as long as I can on a luxury watch. Other prestige watches fail too often and have poor after sales service (Richemont)

For starters, It’s interesting that the most sought after luxury watch in the world is made by a non profit charity.

I wanted a really good automatic watch. Got three Omegas and then, on a whim, got a SubC-ND...I was hooked. It oozed quality like no Omega that I owned: the bezel turned with a professional CLICK unlike the SM300-T that felt like a toy; the double clasp locking system, solid heft, quality steel, hugged my wrist, etc. etc. Now I want an X2...

Rolex really hold their value.
If you buy a watch worth what most Rolex are worth, I like that I can sell it and recoup most if my money so I can purchase something else in the range. I'd buy other watches, and have, but Rolex allows for ease of change of mind like few luxury items.

25 years ago I bought a TT Datejust and a SS Submariner. I recently traded these watches for the same two watches at an AD and can't tell the difference between the watches I purchased 25 years ago.

Internally, Rolex updated their mechanics but kept the timeless appearance of their timepieces.

Today, Rolex timepieces are as popular as they were 25 years ago because of their fine quality and timeless appearance.

There are more accurate and cheaper digital watches on the market but no brand has more admiration and status than a Rolex.

I own Rolex, Omega, JLC, Breitling, and Garmin for their function and beauty as they all provide a niche.

I was into Breitling long before gaining interest in Rolex. Owning both a Navitimer World and a Navitimer Bentley (Motors), it has been quite the transition to be a recently new owner of a Datejust 41. Needless to say, the two tone YG jubilee and the diamond markers on the champagne dial really do something to me!

Love the history of Rolex. Especially as it relates to the proud military heritage beginning with the Air King being sent to British POWs held in Germany and Rolex being worn in the jungles and air over Vietnam. The list goes on and on with Navy SEALS and other country's special forces wearing them thru the years.

Rolex makes a very good, high quality product, but I agree with what a few others have already said. Rolex is “special” because of their history of excellent marketing.

Yes the name Rolex has value and prestige so that is a big part part of the reason people, myself included buy them. Also a Rolex sports watch is a rugged high quality precision watch that will give you good service for many decades. My 16750 GMT Master bought in 1982 has been all round the world with me in the oil industry and is still my everyday watch and performs just as well as the day I bought it. There are not many things in our throwaway lifestyle that can claim that. That said Rolex sport watches also have something about their design that does it for me.

a) i’m glad the OP has been forcibly ejected. thank you for ridding us of his silliness.

b) been thinking a lot about this. because there is some prestige that comes with owning and wearing one rolex, not to mention several. but i really just appreciate the rolex ethos, and what they stand for. exceptional execution of very high quality products that will last forever, and continue to work for that forever. i do occasionally feel a little weird wearing my daydate during a quarantine but... that’s what i bought it for. to wear. and as much as i love and want a Patek 5130 world time, i wouldn’t wear it all the time.

Holy hell, glad you are OK. I am so sorry to ask, but any photos of the watch? I have a weird/morbid curiosity about these things.
