Now are they worth $50k? We could respectfully debate that all day.
Really? An SS Daytona doesnt even feel like a $20k watch. They are so small and light and seriously who even uses the chrono?

I've had a total of 7 Daytona's in the past. I only have 2 left. I'm getting very close to flipping them as well. They just dont feel special at all and especially not at $35k

It may not feel special to you but it clearly does to others... hence the secondary market price. I think these prices are crazy too but I also wouldn't be surprised if they continue going up.

I think they’re special. I love them, the combination of sporty and elegant is unsurpassed. It’s the best SS model Rolex makes and the second most hyped SS model in the watch market, the first being the Nautilus. And hence we have the issue. Is it worth $14k, absolutely, in fact it’s a steal at $14k and a true grail. At $40k, no it is not worth $40k.

Agree they wear small, but that’s ok. My TT and Gold references have a much different weight to them. Currently my TT is my favorite watch. That weight is perfect with just the right amount of flash.

Therefore, I would wait because the gap between the SS Daytona and the PM you want is only going to narrow as time goes by. My opinion of course, but SS Daytona’s are never going to go backward in price. Anyone who believes that the price is going to go down is dreaming. They will only ever go up. So will the Day date but to a lesser extent, and these will also be found at retail at ADs again, SS Daytonas at retail …. Very unlikely.

Anyone holding a SS Daytona today is on a winner, if monetary value is how you are scoring.

Ask yourself how much is a big red or a zenith Daytona vs. DD from the same period. DD isn’t an expensive watch, just buy new at an AD. They are readily available and nothing special

Don’t be short sighted

You are lucky, straight trade for a dd40, done deal. Wearing a PM piece is just another level.

Objectively, I wouldn’t do it. 10 years from now the Daytona will be worth double the value of the day date. And that gap will only get bigger as the time goes by.

Subjectively, you can’t go wrong with a day date.

Sell the Daytona at market rate, then use the money to purchase the DD you want from the AD - you'll score points with them.

Sure. But on the other hand, if OP paid MSRP for Daytona then he is getting a great deal in terms of dollars spent and watches received.

I recently traded a watch likely to go up a bit more (16570) to an AD for one that will likely stabilize lower (new 124270). But the calculus for me was: I paid a discount rate for the 16570 over a decade ago, and am now able to trade it for a new watch that I'd otherwise have to pay MSRP for (plus tax) to buy outright. I came out ahead, and that's what matters since this is my hobby not my business.

Don’t agree. I think the hype with Daytona is a temporary one and will not last long. The DD om the other hand is a classic and has proven its popularity over the last decades.

Would def make the trade

And while you are at it... See if you can get them to bundle another Daytona with the deal at retail!

I too believe the Daytona bubble is bound to burst. I don’t know when but it’s hard for me to imagine this going past 45k. I think the DD40 is incredible and I just feel like this is my ticket to ride with it. Yellow gold champagne too much bling?!

Take advantage of the crazy market pricing and get the DD and don’t look back.

Day date vs Daytona

[QUOTE=Fedpete;11473487]Is the day date in gold this absolutely incredible on the wrist?

Yes...it’s definitely special in a way that a Daytona isn’t. My Day Date is a 36mm and I LOVE it in a way that’s diff than the Daytona. The lines and asthetic of the Daytona is amazing but if I had to pick I think I have to go Day Date. I wore the Day Date as my daily for years....I am now wearing a Pepsi as my daily.

Trade white DaytonaC for gold Day Date 40

Hi OP, yes I was somewhat in your shoes.

I own a YG DD40 white dial romans, and both the black & white dials 116500LN.

Very much wanted to trade up both Daytonas for a Plat DD40 with Baguette diamonds. But whenever I don the Daytonas on my wrist, they are screaming not to let them go... I’ll just have to save up a bit for the Plat.

I think I’ll probably feel good to let the SS Daytonas go when I am allocated the Platona.

No way. SS Daytona was never displayed in the case, even before the hype they were already on waiting lists. Back in those days the Daydate can be bought with 10-15% discount. But we’re in a new age anyway, go with what your heart says.
Only time will tell what happens to the mkt in 5Y time

I would not make this trade unless you are in love with the DD 40. I'm not a fan of that watch but the Daytona C is just a beautiful piece that is far more versatile. I'm not a fan at all of yellow gold and the DD is an old man's watch in my book.

As others said PM >>>>>> 316L SS hyped watch, would do it in a heartbeat!

If YG is too flashy then go for WG (could be found on the same budget as the YG) or PT (more $$) DD
