All this nonsense about taking a black dial and then flipping it for an easy $40k is getting ridiculous. First of all, that is a sure fire way to piss off your AD and second, you are missing the point that some people simply like a white OR black face Daytona and will buy it from an AD, but not inflated gray markets. Also, I see a TON of listings for $50k or more, but how many are selling at that price. Also, gray will take a percent of the sale.

If he wanted white and was offered black, you think he probably should have simply asked or verified the details when he got the call. Imaging getting a call form an AD saying they have a Submariner for you and it is a ND Submariner when you wanted a gold Submariner.

Not that simple- would probably end up costing him at least an extra $10k above what he paid. If he has a good relationship with his AD (yes, it matters), then he will get the white dial within a year.

I wouldn't have picked it up but I sure as heck wouldn't have picked a fight with the AD. What's the point of doing that ? I'd say his chance of a white Daytona from this AD is now zero unless he is a VIP and even if he is, he'll be "that" guy they talk about unflatteringly for some time so the wait will be a long one.

Exactly……I’ve had both….black is better in the ceramic……..he wanted the white because people told him it was the hardest to get and worth more money………..if he was a watch fan he would take any color lol……….unless he buys diamonds the next Daytona he will see is 2 tone…..

Unless he was a real prick, he did exactly the right thing: Didn't take the watch he didn't request because he didn't particularly want it. Seems he really, really wants a white one, and the AD now knows it (because too many would have just taken the black and flipped it).

Now, if the AD were smart...

He'd have suggested the following:

Take the black.
Try it out.
If you end up liking it, great, that's awesome!
If you don't...
Call me, I'll trade you straight up for the next white I get
(and then I'll put the black in my preowned case for a 2.5x markup)

If he got offered a Daytona in LA, he must be a very VIP; even after a year and a half. Many ADs bump you to the bottom of the list if you accept a watch.

OP, please elaborate on the argument/tiff they had, that is more important to his future there than whether or not he accepted the watch.
My AD/SA operates differently than many mentioned here I guess. I asked for a black Daytona because that’s what I wanted. Their lists are specific, I would not have been offered a white dial, tutone, or PM Daytona because other people with my “status” had asked for them.
I am also in the “I don’t buy watches I don’t want” club. I am not a flipper and wouldn’t want to deal with selling or trading around.

So, my brother-in-law was on the waitlist for the Daytona for about a year and a half. Want to point out he wanted a white dial Daytona. Yesterday morning his AD (they live in LA) called him and said congratulations, your Daytona is ready come by to pick it up. He texted me right away, I was very happy for him. Next thing you know, he calls me in a few hours and tells me he refused to pick it up.

What happened, they offered him a black dial Daytona while he wanted a white dial. I was shocked. He said that they had a little fight with his rep, because they clearly knew that he wanted the white dial but instead the allocated a black dial. Truth be told I think his rap was a little bit shocked as well because I never heard of anyone refusing to pick up Daytona at retail from AD.

I asked him what will happen next, he told me that they did not promise him anything soon because they were not sure when the new one will come by, can be a month can be a year could be two years. Plus they had a little argument on unrelated to this watch topic.

I told him he should’ve picked up that watch and trade it for the white dial, that’s my opinion. Or just keep that one.

What do you guys think? Did you do the right thing?

As a former white dial owner I used to roll my eyes at these frequent comments but I've come to agree. The black has no bad angles to view. No washed out / glare at certain angles other than head on etc. Its simply beautiful no matter how you look at it.

He could have just bought a loose white dial on Chrono24 and swapped it.

When I got a call for a dj41, 3 weeks after I first visited, I said no at first because it was a blue dial instead of a silver/white, etc. 10 minutes later I called back and said I’m on my way. I loved the blue in person so I’m glad I changed my mind.

If he's not trying to deal with the pain of buying it, selling it/trading it to get the one he wants, then it makes perfect sense. I'd be a little disappointed as well if they clearly knew what I wanted, told me they had it, and I went in only to find it wasn't what I wanted.

That said, when you say he got into a fight with the AD, that can mean a lot of things to different people, but that could translate to the AD not offering anything in the future. Unless perhaps your brother in law is buying a lot of items beyond watches that the AD cannot easily move, he's likely easily replaceable as a customer.

I’ve been fortunate to get several hard to get pieces from my AD. When I see my SA and Inquire about a watch, I will usually give her a list of preferences. Of which I will take any, if they become available. Fortunately they’ve always given me my top choice. I probably would have taken the black Daytona.

I think he did the right thing if it's not what he ordered. If I ordered a white car and they offered me a blue car when I went to pick up I'd decline. I wouldn't want to go through the hassle of selling it to buy another - even if it was a hard to find model.

Saying that, I doubt he will be getting a call again from this AD.

Still, good on him!

People buying watches they don't want is part of why we are in this mess. Leave it for the person who is waiting on their grail piece, not fuel the grey market with more flipped stock.

You can always have rolex swap the dial for the white.

They won't do that, unfortunately. You could source a dial and have a private watchmaker do it, though.

Me personally don't settle for what you don't want. Similar thing happened to me with a car that I special ordered. After months of waiting it came in the wrong color. At the end of the day I waited for the right color after they reordered it. I would love to have extra money in my pocket, however I would have at least gone and seen it in the flesh to make sure I did / did not like it. If I like it then buy and keep, if I dislike it, ask to hold if for a day and find a close friend that was looking or someone on this forum to pass it to. Everyone's happy and a bit of good karma goes a long way.

Same here, I have the white dial and like it a bit better but I think the black is more beautiful. Looks more dressy to me in a good way.
