The funny thing is that as long as you don't own a WG Sub, you don't care. When you get one and see an SS Sub with a blue bezel insert, you realize that this guy is much smarter than me and then this annoys you.

There’s a guy on eBay who sells the watch the OP saw, and even the custom Cookie Monster ceramic inserts. They are aftermarket, but he claims jewelers can’t tell the difference between his and the OEM insert. He even polishes the center links, on the bracelet, and mentions the real WG version in his ads.

That mod has been around a long time. The shark, I think they call it.

The guy didn't seem to be a poser, so what's the big deal?

I say live...and let live. Let go of what's bothering you and don't forget to breathe.

To me, these are always an integrity issue and speaks volumes about the owner that would do this. The same person would wear a knock off Prada, LV, etc…. It’s tacky IMO. It also disrespects the actual SS model, if it is in fact genuine.

I own a gold mine and just bought the rights to Pantone blue 2387 XGC and I don’t care.

No one should care what anyone else owns. We should all be thankful that we are able to indulge this hobby, to whatever extent we are able. I know I am. It’s an added bonus, if our spouses are supportive. My fiancé took a day off from work, to escort me to the Windup Watch Fair, in San Francisco, 2 weeks ago, and I had a great day. He even bought me two watches. As an avid Seiko fan, I bought myself a Seiko wall clock. It has a quartz movement, but the second hand sweeps. Very cool.

I agree Kat. I have gold watches and really don’t care if anyone else does a mod to fake it.

My spouse also enjoys this hobby and that can good or bad as we enable each other lol

Your new clock sounds interesting. I have never heard of that.

Was it a aftermarket bezel insert?

The thing is Paul, if he's doing that its most likely for attention. And whilst he may not have any knowledge of this forum, he's now indirectly been discussed by 130 odd members with over 5,000 views.

Of course, maybe it was real and he was just messing with you

I wonder if people like OP know that changing bezels was not only possible but encouraged in the pre-Ceramic era.

It's still quite possible apparently, just seriously frowned upon by the gatekeepers.

but like you said it was encouraged, designed to be easy to do and at the end of the day it was still a steel gmt because the 3 inserts were only available for the same steel model. that would be like saying someone bought a pepsi today and put a BLNR bezel on it. there's not really much of an issue there imo since they're both the same model but buying a steel sub and then throwing on a bezel only available to PM is entirely different, and rolex isn't just gonna sell you a different color ceramic bezel like they did with the inserts. totally different world today and situation

i personally don't care if someone does that but it's not for me. i don't pretend to own a watch i don't have or can't afford even if i really like how it looks

I take your points, but these days the anti modding sentiment is getting kinda absurd. We get people here using the puke emojis when someone tries out an after market strap. In somewhat of a response some of us go full tilt the other way and support any crazy mod the owner's little heart desires.

That's a standard feature for Seiko wall clocks. Department stores here have walls of them with a sticker on the front saying "Quiet Sweep Second Hand".

This guy exclaimed the reason he made this mod was not because he likes the color blue, but he is intentionally trying to “fool” people in to thinking it was a precious metal watch. It is none of my business, but I just feel it’s kind of…wrong.

But heck, that’s just me.

wouldn't the people that know about the blue bezel be into watches in the first place? and then some of them would see that it doesnt have the lustre of white gold?

which would make him look a bit of a wally to them, and then if hes trying to kid people thats not into watches hes basically turned a 10k watch into a fake to do it hahaha

I have two engine turned bezel Datejusts which I'm thinking of swapping out one bezel for a fluted one. I love the look of the fluted bezel and if anyone asks I would not pretend the watch was originally a fluted model. I'd be honest and say I changed it because I wanted the look of the fluted bezel. No harm no foul. It's my watch and I have a constitutional right to do so. I would never think of tricking others to think otherwise.

Some people modify because they like the look if it and are honest about it. Some people modify to deceive. Intention is the real matter here...

I don’t think the guy was actually trying to make it look like white gold, despite what OP thought. I think he just wanted a blue bezel.

For the longest time I wanted to get a late model 5 digit GMT and get not only the different GMT bezels for it but a Sub bezel as well to time with.

In case you ended up here by mistake…this IS a watch forum.

People care. Maybe you don’t (which is totally your right) but clearly pages of replies later, people do care.

Thats tacky. I would probably put a black bezel on a WG sub to go incognito...

I think this is something where 20 years ago, no one would care or even ask. Because Rolex has been elevated to this more "exclusive" image and parts have become more difficult to interchange, people take more "offense" to altering a watch in any way. To be fair, there were many reputable grey dealers selling watches on the internet (mostly Submariners and GMT-Master IIs) with OEM modded components. I remember seeing previous generation two tone GMT-Master II with a green dial taken from the all yellow gold model sold quite regularly.

Is this something I'd do? No. But that's more of a function of the fact that I like everything OEM as it was when I purchased it. I don't even really switch straps on any of my watches.
