Hey, Leo. This evening is our school's 4th grade "Taste of the States" event. Each student is assigned a state to research and choose a food item that will be brought to school for parents and kids to taste. June selected Illinois. She suggested bringing pierogies but I wasn't sure how to make them. So we agreed on Chi-town hot dogs. If I remember to get a pic, I'll take one for you and you can see how (if!) they turned out. Luckily my favorite butcher knows all about them and supplied me the proper ingredients (sport peppers, bright green relish, and kosher dills - and of course, the dogs!)

Man, pierogies are wonderful. Hard to make though but they sell them frozen. All the old Polish ladies made them when I was growing up. When I was at a Polish friends house we would eat them quicker than the mother could make them.

Come to think of it all the Grandparents including mine were from another county in my area growing up and some of the parents. I got to eat some good different foods. It was interesting. My school consisted on only Irish and Italian Catholics. That's the only people I knew until I was 18.

My mom's family were Irish (not the Catholic kind, Grandma used to point out) and my dad's were German. So I grew up enjoying traditional fare like boiled brisket and cabbage, potato soup, pork roast and sauerkraut. Oh, and fried Spam. I'm not sure where that tradition came from. Not sure where Spam comes from, for that matter.

I looked for frozen ones around here, to no avail. And I sure didn't want to try making them for the first time and embarrassing my daughter in front of her friends.

When I was a kid my best friends mother was Polish/Czech and she would make these heavenly pastries called Kolaches......we would eat them as fast as she could make them.
Sausage, Berry, apicot ....I could gain 10 pounds in a day now eating them.

They sell those at the annual Czech festival in nearby Yukon. Yummy indeed!

You were probably there when Garth Brooks was finishing up at Yukon High School.

Garth rocks for a country dude.

If she'd have chosen Rhode Island she could have had fish and chips, fried clams (with the belly, not strips), clams on the half shell, Saugies (local hot dog), lobster (lobstah), white or clear chowder (chowdah), quahogs, steamers, calimari, chourico, seperate or all together in a clam boil (not a clam bake - a clam boil).
It's the Ocean state. That's what we do.
Mmm-boy, now I'm hungry.

I love all that food, especially sauerkraut and fried spam. The spam is good with cheddar cheese.

Your Grandma was what we called an Orangemen. They didn't get to have the cool ashes on their foreheads like I got today for Ash Wednesday.

Also if it's not too late poppyseed buns.....sorry I did not see this sooner so I could give you a heads up.....haven't been feeling to well with the RA. I'm sure tonite's cuisine will be fantastic and fun to taste lots of different dishes from all over America.....enjoy!!!

I am! I forget it has a clear caseback sometimes and don't appreciate the movement enough! LOL
I know watchmakers (aka, Carl) appreciate them, tho!

I do appreciate them and a clear caseback is indeed very nice when you like to admire the other side of the watch!

...Still, I do like the challenge of opening the watch sometimes, the result is usually worth it!

Sorry you weren't feeling well, Leo. Check and double check - all ingredients were in order, down to the sport peppers and celery salt. The poppyseed buns were not easy to find, but I did get some.

Yes, the food was nice - some of the families went all out - we had Maryland Crab cakes, andouille sausage from Louisiana, KFC chicken (for Kentucky, or course), Mississippi Mud Cake, and Texas chili. For starters.

Leo, here's a pic of the hot dogs - they were cut into thirds for sampling. I took this pic after I got home with the leftovers.

Thanks, Carl. I don't usually care too much for hot dogs, but the Chicago Style are good - very different from the shredded cheese/mustard/chili kind that are common around here.

It was funny watching the kids go for the peppers - I was worried they would be too spicy, but the kids liked them.

I get so confused between fasting, ashes, palms, giving things up, turning people into toads, eating roses, putting chocolate in a vase, it's just all MUDDLED in my little BRAIN!
