Yes, even though we are almost out of room in the garden beds and borders we are planning on adding a few more Dwarf, Miniature Hostas and a Dwarf Ginkgo tree which can get bushy to the front yard and at maturity it doesn't get larger than 10 feet. And of course we will grow three tomato plants in containers on the back porch and one in the front yard being the Sweet 100 Cherry tomato in a half whisky barrel. Also I was able to pick up around 10 beautiful ceramic glazed containers of different sizes(smallest being 10 inches) last fall at half price which we will fill with flowers and place in the back yard near the porch. Also I might spot a few annuals like Dwarf Zinnias, Ageratums, Alyssums and Dwarf Snapdragons amongst the perennials in the front yard borders. And I imagine I'll think of some other way to add to the gardens.....maybe build another bed and get rid of more grass!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

Leo, I just now snapped this pic of my bottle brush tree

that is in bloom. There are so many bee's in it that you can hear the buzz as you walk underneath. Thought it may warm you up a bit. I think it's 79F today.

Art, Thank you.....your plants and 79F does give me faith that warmer weather is on the way.....but still a little ways off. Your Bottle Brush Tree looks really nice with all the flowers and the buzz of busy bees. As for your Sago Palm...it is beautiful and did you know it's classified in the Cycad Group of Palms? This group of Cycads and Sago Palms dates back to the time of when Dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Nice plants Art.

Yep wish I could help with shovelling snow Leo.

One thing I've gotta do before spring is the put weedkiller on my patio and paving front and back of the house. Every summer I have to spend hours digging out all the weeds. If I ever meet the person who put that paving in.

Someone told me it's best to spray weedkiller at night. Is this because it's better to get them when they're sleeping?

Oh, I forgot to give you an update on the snow...I just got in from shoveling and it is very wet and heavy. We've had about 4" of the white stuff...not too much yet compared to out East last week. And I also had to shake the snow off of all my evergreens because the weight of the snow had the branches bent down to the ground...especially the Yews, Chamaecyparis and Dwarf Alberta Spruce!!!

It's kind of funny but they were already listing school closings last nite for today and many businesses were closing early as well. Now I guess I must be ancient...but when I was a kid they never closed anything early due to snow... In 1967 when we got are biggest blizzard ever I was in Junior High School(now they are called Middle Schools)and they did let us go one half hour early(I guess I lied). I had to trudge home in 18" of snow and was exhausted when I got there. During the night it continued to snow and the winds picked up and there were huge drifts everywhere. That next day the schools ended up being closed as well as everything else because hardly anyone could move around unless your vehicle had four-wheel drive and chains for the tires. I had to push my way out the front door because the snow had drifted up to 4 1/2 feet by the back door and we couldn't get out. I made it to the garage for the snow shovel and it took for ever to clear the driveway due to the drifts and we had a long driveway. Anyways afterwards down the street there was a huge drift between two houses which was as high as the roofs(these were Split-Level homes).....and with two friends we tunneled into it making rooms and hallways. Once we were done we climbed up on one of the neighbor's roof and jumped into it caving the whole thing in...it was sure fun and beat going to school. We were off school for two or three days until they could get the streets cleared and safe to travel on and that's the only time I can remember school being closed due to snow. Btw...that was the largest blizzard the Chicago area ever had and was 23 inches of that white stuff.....of course I know if you live in the country they have to close the schools because of how open and unsafe country roads are!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

Art, I'm waiting to get smacked by a snowstorm, so that was most welcome eye candy. Aaaah...

Leo, don't overdo it on that heavy wet snow, bud.

Lisa, pretty pin, and I love the big size. The old Navajo ladies (and Zunis too) wear a gigantic pin, some up to 5-6" diameter (think about that!), in the middle of their blouse, nestled inside a lovely turquoise squashblossom necklace.

As you can imagine there is quite a range of quality out there of this type of stuff.

A lot of the school districts here were closed today. Very unusual, frankly. The Rodentwoman and I got out OK today, and will finish snowblowing the driveway when I get home. It melts pretty quickly this time of year and spring is just around the corner.

I planted a campsis radicans (trumpet vine) last year. It is supposed to attract hummingbirds but did not flower last year. I hope it does so this year.

Actually Wes it depends on the chemicals you have available for herbicides. Here in the USA a lot of Round Up is used which is a non-selective weed killer that does kill everything it hits. So it's best to spray in the morning when it's not windy(as it really does kill everything it comes in contact with)and when temperatures will be above 50F(10C). It works best when it will be sunny and temperatures are above 60F(15.55C). It comes in two formulas, one where it leaves a residue that lasts for I believe three months and the other one you can replant the area in 24 hours. The active ingredient is a growth regulator which forces plants to grow to quickly and burn themselves out.

Now if you do not want to use chemicals since many people are against them because of the long range effect they can have on ground water, streams and rivers as well as wildlife.....you can continue to manually pull them out(which I do a lot of)or you can get a gas fired torch and burn them out. Which for you having a patio and paver walkways might be the way to go...provided you are allowed to do such things where you live!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

Thanks Leo, I have roundup, will read the label, see how long it lasts. Didn't know pesticides are really bad for the environment. I do hate pulling them out, they come up everywhere. And not sure I can be trusted with a flamethrower.

Update...the snow is still wet and heavy and just did another round of shoveling and knocking the snow off the evergreens...looks like we received another 3" in just two hours.....are we having fun yet???

I know Bill and everyone in the Eastern part of the country are probably rolling their eyes at me(I dare you to shovel snow with a dislocated wrist and thumb...I double dare you) since this is our first really decent storm of the year but the snow is expected to last all night and into tomorrow morning. The irony is by Friday and through the weekend it's suppose to get into the 40's...go figure!!

Okay rant over...we now return you to your normal scheduled programming.....

Take it easy.....Leo

Wes, you must read the fine print on the torch...I believe it states do not drink alcohol excessively before using. Now afterwards is a different story!!!

Late tomorrow night we will be getting the snow, rain, wind. Either 4-8 inches or up to 12. Interesting what a range they offer eh?
Winter this year has been a bear.

Here's the blizzard of '78.

Knock 'em dead, Art.

Bob, you had mentioned planting trumpet vine for the hummingbirds... I found quite by accident that the li'l hummers also love purple hyacinth bean vine. My daughter brought the seedling home from school in a paper cup and we planted it in the garden. By mid-summer, when it started to bloom, we had hummers sipping from it. The vine grows like crazy but doesn't send runners underground, and it's an annual as well, so I just pulled it up after the first frost.

My thoughts exactly, Lisa. I just need to know what everybody's favorite gemstones are, and they'll be on their way.

(although saving this particular face is gonna need some really benevolent surgical intervention, I'm afraid. )
