That's not a true representation of the grey - almost looks like a filter.
Call the Savile Row store - a lot of people like to work with Neuss, who is a pro - or, just email G&G sales and you'll get Dean Girling who will be glad to help you with colors.

I ordered some Green blue suede shoes that I really wanted, but even their widest last was too narrow for my feet so I had to return them. I guess I need to try shoes on before buying, but in my area there are not many stores that carry high end shoes, even Neimans carries very conservative shoes.

I used Styleforum extensively where users who wore similar shoes with various Lasts shared a lot of good information. I also worked with shoe retailers who were very helpful. It certainly helps that I have average width feet. But I ordered most of my shoes without ever trying them on. There's just no way I could have gotten the footwear I did without doing so over the internet, However this is always risky, but there are ways to minimize that risk,

John,

You should visit Gentleman's Footwear in SD. They carry EG as well as other high end shoes and some clothes, too.

I'd like to visit the next time I am in SD.

I am in a shoe conundrum!

Looking for some recommendations if y'all please.

I need a pair of rubber soled shoes for inclimate weather, ideally something with a dainite sole.

Really the perfect shoe would be the Allen Edmonds McAllister, but I am worried about the quality. Don't get me wrong, they're nice, but I had to send back a "first quality" pair due to qc issues. Plus, the fact that I can spend $50 more and get a pair of Crockett and Jones.

I really enjoy my Islays, so I'd prefer to get an oxford offering of theirs.

Which gets me to my next issue. The closest wingtip to the design of the McAllister, is their Pembroke. Which is damn near perfect. Wingtip, storm welt, dainite sole, BUT, it's a "derby" shoe, and I can't stand derbies for whatever reason.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a wingtip oxford with a dainite sole, at or above Crockett and Jones quality, preferrably for less than $800?

Wow, it's been such as long time since I looked at CJ's catalogue but for the price range you really can't go wrong with CJ. Frankly that would be my choice if I wasn't so adverse to most of their shoe Lasts.

Have you gone online and looked at their.Catalogue?

Nice collection!

You can't go wrong with a pair of color 8 LWBs. Classic shoes!

Thanks Wes... Yes. I love Shell Cordovan. I may look at some Cordovan boots. I saw Trickers had some in interesting colorways recently. I also had Alden put me on the "waiting list" for Ravello, Alden's proprietary shade - when Horween actually does a run. Man, the list was a few years old...and a few guys with my exact size ahead of me. This is worse than the list for a Ceramic Daytona!

I had a pretty decent cordovan collection, but I've been selling my cordovan shoes. Right now, I have a pair of Alden LWBs in color 8 and Ravello as well as a pair of C&J PTBs, similar to the version made for Ralph Lauren, but in whiskey instead of dark brown. I plan on selling the C&Js and only keeping my two Alden LWBs.

I want to diversify and move towards calf and some other leathers.

Much thanks.

I enjoy the process. It's just hard to do the entire shine process ala buffing with a cloth when someone isn't wearing the shoe! As soon as my kid's foot gets bigger, he'll be standing in for me

I don't have any good rig for holding the shoes in place for the final cloth treatment, so a vigorous brushing is as far as I go.

I spit shine the rigid leather, but buff the rest with a cotton diaper to a high glaze. I use my feet as the fixture for the final buff.

My father had a metal shoe mount - looked kind of like a tree - attached to his workbench for the cloth work. Pretty cool, but haven't seen one in ages.

I've seen a similar rig on you tube. Some guy does shoe shine videos that double as ASMR videos. Supposedly people watch/ listen to them to fall asleep.

I'll need to limber up to try that. Not Steve Bannon limber, but...well, you know. 🤣

I find the process of cleaning shell shoes to be fairly easy. I start off with a quick brushing to remove the dust, mist the shoes all over with water, wipe down with a cotton cloth and then do a final brushing to bring up the natural luster. The only problem with shell is that you pretty much have to do this after every wearing.

Yeah, brushing and occasionally rubbing a spot or streak about does it.

I have some Saphir cordovan cream and Bick4 that I use on occasion, but always in very small amounts.

I have applied a bit of Saphir pate de luxe neutral wax on the toe box in order to add a bit of protection from scuffs and what not. I have a tendency to kick things when I am walking.

If our shoes were made of 904L, he'd have a point. But museum calf needs a little more maintenance than stainless steel. And shell looks crappy all scuffed up.

Only two pairs of shoes worth any mention on my end are Crockett & Jones Oxfords - one in black, one in brown.

Had the brown ones since 2012 and they've since developed a nice patina, and picked up the black one on sale in December last year. They are worn daily by me in the office. Only two pairs of dress shoes I ever need.
