I smoke a lot during the tasting. In a few words about Glenlivet 15Y. After opening, sniffing the smell of fruit, apples and pears, a bit of caramel and lemon somewhere. The first sip warms the throat well. Somewhere in the distance you can feel positive alcohol. Medium finish, lightly burning all the time, with fruit and bitterness in the background. I took Jacek's Gentleman as a starter, so there is not even a comparison here. Two minutes have passed, and my throat still feels the taste, quite pleasant, maybe slightly smoky ... and somewhere at the end buckwheat honey ...? Overall very nice :)
Second sip. I will say this, the finish is rather long, fruity and honey. Another puffing on the surface is alcohol. You have to stick your whole nose. Then it's just nice room temperature (no ice), I drink outside, it's divine! And 18 is still waiting for the opening. It will only happen |

My friend Johny (also a TRF member) and his wife took me to the Glengoyne distillery in 2018, tasted a few of their offerings. Best thing is when I took one of the samples we got with me on the camping trip in the Glen Etive the next day. Nothing like sipping 18 year old whisky in the Highlands at a campfire |

Ive recently found a honey-hole and got the 12, 15, 18 and 21 at crazy prices.. got their last 12 and gonna stop by and grab another 18.. Found 2 of the cask strength 8 yrs as well. The reviews are equal or better than their Macallan counterparts and half the price!

Can the experts please give me examples of rye whiskey and how it differs from other types of whiskeys?

Its the Mashbill that decides the style of whiskey that's being made, if the mashbill is predominantly Rye the whiskey is a rye, if its corn it "could" be a bourbon, malted grain, Scotch and so forth. Rye tends to be spicier on the palate then other whiskeys and lend themselves to cocktails and drinking straight when you are looking for a less sweet iteration then Bourbon expressions.

I have a bad habit of letting boxes stack up and sit around for longer than they should. Out of sight, out of mind.......

Yes!! So a rye whiskey is a whiskey that is made up of at least 51% rye grain. The rye grain gives whiskey that “rye spicey” taste. For a bourbon, amongst other grains, it has to be at least 51% corn.
Most true rye whiskeys are 85% + rye grain. There is a lot of research out there that explains all of this, but I highly recommend watching the documentary neat on Hulu to learn the basics. I know bourbon and rye whiskeys very well (not scotch or Japanese whiskeys) very well so please feel free to reach out with any questions! Would love to share the knowledge! |
