Leo has already mentioned the "throwback" soft drinks, and they're available at Target and Wal-Mart on occasion. Mountain Dew and Pepsi come to mind.
We have never been out there to try that place....it seems to always be just a little out of the way from wherever we are going. I've heard it's a fun place!

J, here in Chicago they sell Pepsi "ThrowBack" which is made with sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. Did you know that most table sugar is made from beets and not cane sugar. There are only a couple of brands that are made with sugar cane...one of them is the Domino brand.....

Sorry, J, but the non-Pesachdicha bagel is still traif until dinner tonight.

You may be right, Leo. Could be that the Sephardics spell it "trayf" and the Ashkenazis spell it "traif." It sounds the same no matter how you spell it.

You're "right" (I mean look who you are, per avatar), but not in Israel or for Reform, so good enough for me.

(And to my mind it doesn't matter how you spell traif/trayf, since it's transliteration.)

Does anyone agree that the music of Gershwin sounds different than that of Mozart, or is it just me?

You are absolutely right. As long as we pronounce it correctly (using our best Yiddish), you can spell it either way.

As far as Israel goes, Israelis go to the beach on Yom Kippur, so what does that tell you?

Very different. Mozart is late 18th Century lyrical/musical; Gershwin is 20th Century musical. Both are great to listen to but are very different.

We're doing fine, Leo. We're doing a fair amount of travel, mostly New York, some Florida, a little Chicago, and in a couple of weeks we go through ORD to get to Davenport for the Bat Mitzvah of our very good friend's granddaughter.

Having the grandchildren almost around the corner from us has its pluses and minuses. On the plus side, we get to see them more often than when they lived in New York; on the minus side, Arleen spends a lot more time babysitting during the day. It takes its toll on her, which is one reason we travel - to get away from time to time.

There's nothing humorous about neither of them sounding like Courtney Love. But funnily enough, Courtney Love somewhat resembles the sound of Amy Winehouse.

I'm sure Amy Winehouse fans will take offense to the musical comparison but their lifestyles seemed very similar.

They have it better than Midwesterners?

--
About Gershwin (the Gershwins, really), they absolutely had their ear to the ground and refashioned what they heard in folk culture of their day, and this why they were very much like Mozart in terms of their creative approaches. The end products of these artists were different, but again, the line between high art and popular music is not rigid, not even in past centuries.

RE: Gershwin, I was listening to "An American in Paris" and it struck me as funny when I thought - that doesn't sound like Mozart. Guess it's one of those "you had to be there" moments.

I have a CD (remember those) done by....I can't recall.... who programmed a computer to compose a completely "original" work in the style of Mozart. Very interesting.

(I listen to classical music all day at work.)

You know that famous opera "Das Reingold"-- "My beer is Reingold, the dry beer....."

Ohhh yes, looks bit like mine. I like that black and white rug, why didn't you suggest that?

Wonder where I can get a parrot like that, would really be the finishing touch to my front room.

Thanks guys, was blown away but this place. Really only posted a fraction of what they had, you could spend a week there. Very educational, especially with all the stories attached to the exhibits.

Them leather jackets are amazing.
