I just couldn't believe it... still can't even though it's sitting on my wrist. Now comes the decision on whether to sell it or sell both the replacement and the midsize, and keep this, as my first...*awww shucks*

Hey guys, the strangest thing ever happened today. I bought my first Rolex in 1998, a TT ladies size Yachtmaster. I loved it, wore it always, and was rarely without it. Then 3-4 years ago I lost it. I last remember wearing it into a friend's "wake" held at a local pub. When I left the pub, it was no longer on my wrist. The clasp had previously just opened several times, and I just snapped it back on, and never had anyone look at it. I figured it let go, and I was out of luck. I was very sad, thought about checking through pawn shops, had already tried at the pub, and was pretty upset. I tore the house apart just in case I had been mistaken about wearing the watch into the wake, but knew in my heart that I'd lost it there. I would have bet money on it. I looked just about every possible place there was, up one side of the house and down the other. Nothing. A friend remarked that Richard, the man who passed, always liked Rolexes so perhaps he took mine as his last farewell. I thought that would have been ok, although it would have looked pretty silly on him, being so small.

Fast forward to about 6 months ago. I missed my TT YM, and went onto eBay and bought one from 1997 at a decent price. Then I started my collecting. Husband decided he wanted an Explorer II, gave me his midsized YM, I prepared to sell the 1997 YM to wear the larger one, and took it to a watchmaker to clean it up and get it ready.

Last week, I heard that the pub where the wake had been had closed, which got me thinking about Richard and how I missed him. I decided to clean the house a bit, since it was kind of a mess, and started straightening up the bedroom. I picked up a piece of roll on luggage that just didn't belong where it was, and was about to put it elsewhere when I heard something fall to the floor. And guess what it was? It's not the 1997, because that one is still in Herndon at the watchmakers. After finally pulling the bracelet off (a chore because it was so dirty), there was the U serial of a 1998 YM.

Holy crap, eh?
That sure is an incredible story Mikki, I'm really glad to read you found your watch and in such a surprising and funny way!

A similar thing happened to me a few years ago as well, I had lost my tiger eye ring (the one I've shown you a few times) and was sure I had dropped it and threw it away with a lot of papers, old bags and the mess I made in my bedroom back in the days (you know how teenagers are sometimes...). About a year later, whilst moving a computer desk (with a lot of mess on it) with my father we heard a strange noise...my ring fell off of it! I don't know when or why I put it on this desk but I never noticed it! Seems like great minds lose and find alike...

There you go Mikki, the pictures I told you about a few days ago (I know it's Monday morning, forgive me for being late...).

First of all, the watch I received last week! You can read the thread I started about it here!

And here's another little something I want to work on as soon as I can.

This small mechanical musical box was bought in the 1950's by my grandfather, he purchased it when my father was about one year old and he used to wind it and leave it in his bedroom to help him fall asleep. This little box made my father, my aunt, my sister, my brother and I fall asleep, either at night or when we would take naps at their place.

Since we used to play a lot with it it fell down a few times, as you can tell, it wasn't always very lucky...

The key to wind is is beneath the movement...

...Which is right in there!

So if we take the small bird off...

Here it is, the very small movement that makes this thing play music!

The mainspring is in there...

When you wind it, a wheel in the barrel makes those perpendicular gears turn to make the "melody barrel" move.

The small dots will lift the small lines and when they fall they make notes that eventually sound like music. What I like about it is that the music slows down as the mainspring gets unwound, it really makes you want to take a nap.

That small brass plate will get lifted as the music plays to make the bird move above the movement. When the bird falls down, the two small rods attached to it make it turn as they hit the "floor", the bird always moves whilst the music is playing.

This wheel lifts the plate.

The other wheels and gears take the energy of the mainspring to move as the music plays. Basically the energy makes this little plate rotate rather quickly.

This plate allows you to hack the mechanism if you want to stop the music. In order to do it you must push that little stem that goes through the movement's protective cage. It will stop the small plate and it will block the movement.

As soon as I get my class on clocks I'm going to clean, polish (with Flitz, I just want to make it a bit more shiny) and lubricate this movement to make sure it works for another 60 years!

Both of those pieces are very nice!! What are you going to do with the watch? p.s. I love music boxes. Yours is gorgeous. I hope you can make it work for another 160 years :-)

Carl,
Thanks for posting pics of your music box. That's so cool and SPECIAL!
Well the Rolex, too of course, but I got distracted by the music box. :)

Thanks for the pictures Carl. Looking forward to seeing both cleaned up. Maybe a little youtube clip of the music box.

Thank you kindly guys! I'll wait until the music box is cleaned before I film it but it still sounds good and works well! As for the watch, a service is definitely in order so I'll avoid wearing it for now (besides, I want to buy a new band for it).

Does anyone here watch The Big Bang Theory?
Ethan and I just shared a bunch of laughs by texting the words to 'Soft Kitty' to my iPhone and had Siri read back the text.
Now I can have Siri "Sing Soft Kitty to me." just like Penny. Well maybe not just like Penny but still really really cool.
Remember you heard it here first.

I'm afraid I don't watch that show but I'll ask my sister about it, she talks about The Big Bang Theory all the time...

That's unfortunate. She won't be able to have Siri sing Soft Kitty to her.

I lurve the Big Bang Theory. So when Siri recites the lyrics, she just says them, I'd assume? Or does she really sing it?

Just recites but that's good enough for me. Have to use punctuation to make Siri pause.
I think having Siri say the soft kitty song is just a whole nuther level of nerd. LOL

And without further ado..... I got the call this morning. Turns out Ball in Florida stuck the box somewhere and didn't realize it was a special request from a customer. They overnighted it Monday.

The pink MOP looks different depending on the light, from smooth salmon to pearly iridescence.

I really like the curved crystal... it's like a square bubble.

An exhibition back!

Bunny seal of approval. Can I scratch a bunny with my Ball watch? You can see that the watch is smaller than my DJs - it's 28mm by 38mm. It's still got ample wrist presence.

Fantastic, Lisa! Do you love it? It looks great on you and has that completely vintage look. Enjoy!

So can you remind us: is this part of a new reissue, as opposed to a one-off? I wasn't completely clear about this from your earlier discussion.
