Oh, he wasn't an outside dog. He lived with us indoors except he went outside during the day when we were at work unless it was too hot or too cold (he favored cold temps). My yard is all fenced in and he had the run of the yard most of the time unless rain forcasted then he'd be tied to the dog house otherwise he'd just stand out in the rain. Poor fella got confused but if he was tied then he'd just hang out in the dog house safe and dry. He was tall and he'd stand up against on the front yard fence and bark at passers by. Scared the bejesus out of strangers because he was almost as tall as they were and had a big woof. Real nice pup. Still miss him. Broke my heart when he died. Gentle but watched everything like a hawk.

Well, good. :)

Bill, Bandit was so handsome. He looked an awful lot like an English Shepherd, a breed I always have here: what was his breeding background?

Thanks. He was a rescue mutt. Found with his mom and littermates under a porch somewhere in N.C. Destined to be killed until a rescue came and got them and transported him up to Ma. where I adopted him at 12 weeks old. He hated riding in cars ever since.
I have a sad picture taken before I got him. This was the picture in his listing.

That is a sad little photo, Bill. Bandit was so lucky that you took him in and gave him a good life. And the best dog house ever.

Did you build a house for Murphy, too?

As sad as that pup picture is, how wonderful that a family changed his fortunes forever. Bandit was a very handsome and happy boy.

Mikki, condolences on the loss of your grandmother. Family stuff during funerals gets very...weighty. Kick your shoes off here.

Thank you.
Nope. Murphy won't go outside by himself for very long. He's not very independent.
He's a people pup.

Thanks to everyone. I can't wait to be home. I haven't bought anything (haven't seen anything truly amazing). I do really appreciate all of the condolences and support. It's a rough time, which will be rougher still on Thurs when we have the service.

I should have paid more attention to what breed I was getting, since there are big differences in temperament. She's a lionhead/dutch mix, but the vet said she's probably also part jackrabbit.
Part jackrabbit?! I'm sure this is way funnier to me than it is to you after the chewed sofa and clawed forearms.

Amazing job Dave did with the rabbit hutch, Lisa.

How big does a chicken coop have to be?

We already knew you rule the roost.

Thanks, Wes. Bunny seems very happy there.

A chicken coop for two hens wouldn't have to be much larger, in fact if we do build one it probably will be very similar in size. We would put more ventilation in the boxed in area, add nesting boxes and a roost and ideally add an enclosed run. Dave already said he'd build one - after Phoebe batted her eyes at him.

Nah, I laughed, too. I think the little 4H girls we got her from in Yukon might have pulled a bait-and-switch on us.

Not surprised. Near as I can tell Dave loves a project.
Can rabbits and chickens hang out together in a pen or are chickens too messy? I know rabbits get sick easily but I'm guessing some quality time munching on the lawn with the chickens pecking nearby would be pert near bunny heaven.

I would think they could be let out at the same time. When Leah's out she spends most of the time hanging out under the patio furniture.

I wish Leah and the hens could share a space, but you're right - not good for rabbits to be in such close quarters with chickens. I wish the area behind the garage didn't get so danged hot in the summer - otherwise it would be a good place to keep the chickens because there's no lawn (just weeds!) and no sprinklers, and the coop would be out of sight for the neighbors.

What I really would like to know is... just how messy would two hens be? The one we had when I was a kid didn't have a coop - she just roamed around the property, so we never had to clean up after her aside from hosing off the patio every so often.

Oh you can let the chickens out in the garden.

How would you get them back in the coop. I'm imagining the bit in Rocky where he has to catch a chicken as part of his training.

If you're interested in a "outdoor" pet fowl only, have you considered getting a peacock ? They make great pets.

A peacock, eh? That would actually get us around the city ordinance... though I don't know if peahens are known for good egg production...

Have you ever had one as a pet?

Have you ever had one as a pet?

Are they smart or are they pea brains?

Do peacocks have peanuts?

Do they like music from pea diddy or do they prefer pea-ano?

LOL

I was about to get one a few years back, and was planning to build a little shelter next to my springhouse for it, but then the breeder sold the farm where they had them and I never heard anything more from them . The price was very reasonable, like less than $100.. My macaw was 20X that amount 25 years ago.

The beauty was that they are very hardy birds. They'd have to be to survive a W PA winter. That and they like interacting with humans, especially the ones that are bringing them food.

They're all over that place at our city zoo. They'll come up and take popcorn from your hand.

Do you still have the macaw?

The Amish ladies keep guinea hens as pets and garden-pest wizards. They're awfully pretty, speckled black and white. I just like the idea of having bug eaters on a property.

Guineas are pretty. I used to collect their shed feathers when we'd go to the poultry barn at the state fair. My dad used to have them on the farm when he was a kid. He said they were noisy, but they laid eggs about as well as the chickens did.

They can become pests, doc. Very loud. The are also fond of leaving large dropping in side walks, porches and so forth. Some neighborhoods around here have them and they now wish they were gone, very messy.
