When I decided to buy my first "real" watch there was no question that I would buy Rolex. I grew up with them. Dad wore a brown dialed President and Mom a black dialed Lady's President. My grandparents wore them too. I even remember seeing a few Subs while hanging around dive operations as a kid.

Combine the history of the watch, an in-house movement and bullet proof quality and craftsmanship...there were no other options.

Because it is a symbol of excellence and prestige. Excellence in watchmaking, as well, as ones pursuits and accomplishments in life.

I dont wear Rolex because somebody else does or somebody tells me to... It is my opinion that this is the best watch brand in the world (to me at least) And on top of that the Daytona was my grail for about 10 years, I always thought I would get the SS but when I found out on paper the TT is cheaper and easier to get I went ahead and am so happy I did.

I bought mine for quality. One only has to purchase quality once..unless you flip it.

Why do I wear Rolex? GQ magazine tells me I have to in order to be accepted. I am product of societies ideals therefore I spend money I don’t have to buy things I don’t need to impress people that I don’t like!

J/K – I personally love the look and feel of the watches. But I like Omega too!!

My Rolex GMT MASTER II was the only watch that went well with my BMW 330i and my LV wallet

I wear a sports Rolex because of its design, durability and reputation. the word "Rolex" have have always been synonymous with quality and prestigous watches. It is afterall, i think the most copied-after watch ever.. I wear one because since adolescene I have always wanted one.

Logically, it should be, but logic has no place in WISdom. I mean who needs a 5 grand watch to tell time?

A 50 bucks Casio will suffice.

I hear ya. My Dad. Product of the depression. $30 watch. Thinks I am an idiot for having a Rolex and would freak out if he knew I had more then one. I can't tell him about my collection and interest in Rolex. He would not understand or accept it.

Hello everyone ! I am a new member and found this site by accident when browsing on Google. After years of friends bugging me because of my penchant for nice watches, it is great to know that I am not on my own !

Why do I wear a Rolex ?

Well, I think it all started years ago when I was a small boy, going to Nottingham at Christmas with my grandparents and looking at the lovely blue and red GMT Masters in WH May's snowy shop window. They were expensive of course, but surely, - they must be expensive for a reason !

Years later I started scuba diving, and had a cheap £50 watch which was good, and never leaked. Then one day I found myself looking in an AD window in Sheffield and suddenly realised that if I wanted one I could have one, as at that time I was not married or mortgaged but had recently graduated and had a solid promising future. I ordered a Submariner S/S non-date for delivery in one months time. When the day came the AD received a date one, but not mine so I paid the extra and had that one rather than wait any longer.

Then, a few years later, I met my wife and got married and bought a bungalow and found out how expensive life can be. I also found that buying a Rolex is one thing, but actually keeping it is something else, and I sold mine to buy a new bathroom suite.

Winding on a few years, to 2004, my wife and little girl bought me a Submariner non-date for my birthday and I wear it every day, and will never sell it.

I love its looks and even its reliability seems better than my old one. We used to joke when Joanne would ask me the time and I would reply - " Oh, - round about half past three !" And I don't think the bracelet fits over a drysuit as good as my first divers watch with the rubber strap, but it is just a beautiful, well made watch with a history of exploration behind it. The Evolution of the Submariner feature on Rolex's website said it all (I cannot see it there now).

I also have had an Omega Seamaster which was lovely but the movement broke, which was a disappointment and also an Eterna KonTiki Chronograph which was beautiful (with seemingly better build quality than the Rolex dare I say). I no longer have them anyway, as I now have the watch that I want, and have always wanted.

Sorry if this has gone on a bit and bored you.

Best wishes
Martin :-)

Hard to encapsulate in words, but looking at my rolex just makes me feel better.

My old man died when i was like 8-9 years old, was a bit hard, later got into law school, took two buses to get to school, bussed in back in the piss rain freezing cold, worked all weekends, all vacations, graduated, struggled, and i always thought one day i will have a rolex to symbolize that i made it out of that era of life.

My mates think its a waste, yet they party every weekend, drive expensive cars that depreciate to 30% residual value, blow money on girls.

My mum used to not understand, but know she is "ok" with it. I showed her a pic of a day date, she agreed that it would be a purchase to be made if i did well i.e. partnership etc

I also like its symbol of quality, residual value, great looks, some people do admire it.

A member once put this reason to buy a Rolex:

"People who buy things they don't need, for money they don't have, to impress people they don't like"

I'm with you on that, Tom. My parents have been gone since 1989, but would feel the same way if they knew about my collection. They did a good job preparing me for life, but they themselves never fully recovered from the Depression. They could never let themselves enjoy life or recognize that they were doing well financially. Same for my wife's parents. Very sad, really.

Ummm...my story's the worst of the lot.

A mate said to me he knew of a jeweler who had a Rollie for $800, and did I want it?

We headed down and looked at it. The crystal was split in two -- a disreputable shop later charged me $200 to replace it -- and I had no idea if it was real. This being Shanghai, this was a real gamble. There is a whole, major industry there dedicated to the production of phony antiques (I saw a bubbleback in a shop there that someone told me was a fake...but I'll be damned if I believe that it was...that thing was spectacular).

I am glad I bought it. It's the blue DJ I've had ever since.

I have two other Rolexes now, as is well-documented on these pages, and they bring me pleasure every day.

I might be A.D.D., because It's my lifestyle to bounce quickly from cool gadget to cool gadget, and back again. This is one pretty cool gadget! What else can you buy that you can enjoy 24 hours a day? My car is really cool - but I use it about 1 hour per day. My guitars are amazing - but I take 'em out only once in a while. My camera gear is top notch, but I shoot with infrequency... Even more can be said about my motorcycle's infrequent use. About all of these, one could say they are pricey (relative to other products in their lines), which means I like quality gadgets!

As with many things (sunglasses for example) I'm the type to buy a single time - the best quality, nicest looking I can find, almost regardless of price. It teaches you to take care of your stuff - I hear it all the time - "Why wear $200-$300 sunglasses when you can buy a pair for $10-$20 bucks - and if they break, or you loose them, it's only $10 for a new pair". I don't understand that.

I've only had a few pairs of sunglasses (1 every 5 years roughly) - all of which I still have in perfect condition, and have never lost or broken them. I agree that it's possible to loose them, and thus 10x the money is lost, but much can be said about taking care and responsibility for your things. And if you can do that, you get to wear a quality product along the way - not some junky heavy sunglasses - for roughly the same price in the long run.

As for tradition, family etc... yes, I'm starting a tradition!

Why do I wear a Rolex?

Many years ago I was on a one week business trip to a very small town in New Hampshire. The battery in my watch which I also used as an alarm clock died and there was no place that had a replacement. It was then and there that I decided to buy a self-winding mechanical watch.

I also had a second job working in the local planetarium and the next week a guy was sitting in front of me with a watch that was so bright you could almost read by it. When the show was over I asked him what it was and he told me it was a Rolex, but I probably couldn't afford it (I guess as a planetarium worker I couldn't). So a couple weeks later I bought a used SS Sub that I flipped for a TT Sub then a TT GMT and it's been downhill ever since. I still have the TT GMT which is my travel watch.

My first rolex was a submariner date which I still have Today! I was an avid scuba diver and also liked the Look of the classic sub!
What other brands hold their value like Rolex? Not to mention the Quality craftmanship! No other watch manufacturer comes close to Rolexes acheivements and unsurpassed track record! If you can afford it buy what you like! Rolex, Frank M, Tag, PP, I dont buy Rollies just for the status! I wear them!
