That was an eye-opener!

Never liked "flavoured coffee" much less a civet poo one.

Don't even put milk nor sugar.
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Looking for suggestions

TRF,

I am looking for suggestions for an already roasted whole bean that is medium to dark with a good quality smooth finish (sorry about the lexicon - will be a present for a family member and I am more of a dunkin drive thru dude). Recipient grinds their own but is not into roasting at hom. Not worried about price so long as I can have it in hand before christmas.

Thanks in advance for any help.

So we just spent the last week of so in San Juan PR. The coffee at the local coffee shop was phenomenal. As a matter of fact Starbucks on the way to the airport tasted bad after drinking the local coffee for a week. The best, by far, was from a place called Don Ruiz in Old San Juan.

I have to guess the giant La Marzocco machine had a lot to do with that. They roasted their own beans on site and had quite the set up for that as well.

Does anyone have experience with the Comandante C40-MK3 manual grinder?

Would like to get one for french press coffee.

That's a very expensive manual grinder, Bas.
There is a reason why you want to grind your bean manually?
(been there, done that, didn't like it)

I'd like to do an old school brew on Sundays, heating the water on a woodstove, manually grinding the beans and then use a French press.
I read that this was the absolute best manual grinder, but I am open to other suggestions as it is quite pricey.

Going by the price, it probably IS the best manual grinder.
I totally 'get' the idea of doing your coffee ritual manually.
I have a basic Italian manual Espresso machine. It takes me a while to generate a few coffees but I like the 'process' (and the result)
I just wondered about the manual grinder as there are reasonable conical burr electric grinders for that sort of money that would do just as good a job, but I do understand that you might like to grind manually. Cheers.

Comandante seems to have more distribution channels in Europe than the US, so I can't comment on that one specifically. Prior to acquiring my electric grinder, I used an Orphan Espresso Lido 3 which is of a similar build quality to the one you're asking about. It's a great grinder for medium to dark roasts, and becomes exercise equipment when you try to do an espresso grind for light roasts. The quality of the grind was superior to a cheaper Hario Skerton grinder I'd used previously, and nearly on par with the fancy grinder I use now. I think a hand grinder is the way to go for your needs.

I second the Ristretto. A simple espresso, no sugar, no nothing. Ahh, life is good..

The €40 gap between the Orphan lido 3 and the Comandante C40 is negligible.
I'll be doing some more research on these grinders and on which French press to get, don't want to rush a pretty expensive purchase like this...

Fortunately I am a fan of the darker roasts:chuckle, so no heavy exercise?:

Nice!

The Jamaican looks good but I've never roasted it before. Other less expensive yes but not sure how it would come out.

I have roasted every bean on the offer list, my current favorites in order are:

1. Extra Fancy Kona - This lot really really shines imho
2. Finca Larguero Microlot - Very well balanced clean bean
3. Yirgacheffe - This is one of the better lots we have seen in the last 12mo
4. JBM - Very good also but if it was my $$ you see the above 3

All beans have different thresholds for roasting etc. it really depends on if its a natural or not & how fresh(green) the bean is. Moisture is between 8-12% and decreases over time after milling.

Congratulations! The Moccamaster is the Best, IMHO! Our current set up... The filters in the picture make a real difference in the taste of your coffee too.

Bought a few lbs. of another favorite bean to enjoy!

Coffee Sits Near Lows

Summary
  • Coffee and sugar have been under intense selling pressure.
  • The Brazilian real weighed on prices.
  • Coffee could be next.

If you love strong, clean tasting coffee from Central America, I highly recommend Sunburst coffee from Costa Rica. I stayed with a friend in Playa del Coco and he turned me on to it. The main store/roaster is a few miles away so I picked some up while there. He told me it’s distributed in the US out of Austin! They package pounds, not 12 ounces like most. It’s incredible. Had a local boutique roaster (Batdorf & Bronson) I was hooked on, and I now order from Sunburst exclusively.

You gotta’ like it strong, but the Terrazu dark roast is the best coffee I’ve had. I order 4 lbs at around, free shipping, arrives 2-day priority a few days later.

I thought I’d want to mix it up, but can’t stop drinking it! Enjoy!

I’ve just read through the whole thread. Some great machines and coffee beans. I need to start buying whole beans after I get a grinder, then maybe learn how to roast beans. I’ve been using Gevalia coffee in an Alessi Mola pot and a hand frother. It’s not bad and the Alessi is a work of art worthy of heirloom status. I’ve had too many Moka pot handles melt away, the Alessi handle is copper!
