Have met Paul many times at the track, truly wish you had met him.... to understand. PLN was a great man, make that a truly great man.

What am I missing here?
That specific timepiece has both sentimental and actual value due to rarity and who wore it, and how it appeared within a famous photo. Combine that with the proceeds from the sale going to charity.

Just one of Paul's things that pretty much no one knows about except those who need it. Paul did MANY things, here's one example www.holeinthewallgang.org

FYI: A few days before PLN passed i saw him and wife hanging out at LRP. i was there testing/tuning for upcoming SCCA event. Down-to-Earth, great people.

Why congrats to every Daytona owner?. The watch that sold was THE Paul Newman daytona. The actual one. the 116520 and ceramic Daytonas are mass produced models in which unless you turn into the next Paul Newman is just another daytona. Values wont go up on a daytona because THE Paul Newman sold for millions.

I think it was Rolex too, but then the auctioneer couldn't say I know who the bidder is and it will be back on sale in a couple of years, so there is a sales element in there too.

A few did, I was out by half a million. I could just feel it in the air, like Tulips and Dot Coms. With a normal slow-boil bid off I think this would have gone to 20m.

I would say member Springer, who knows his vintages, got this most right.

That 10 million starting bid was epic! Like a boss!
Are the more modern Daytonas getting even more desirable due to this?

Well they are. 4500 for sale on chrono24.

The paul newman daytona is not your everyday standard daytona. Its a very unique one of a kind piece. The 116520 was easy to get at ADs prior to the ceramic. In a few years the ceramic will be easily obtainable as well. No ones ceramic is going to sell for 17 mill. No ones.

I do not know who won in the end but I do know that a group of collectors banded together to purchase this watch.

The price is a lot and on the point of charity, seller wouldn't say how much would go to Newman Foundation.

I sure as hell hope it was Rolex. A "collector" piece is a cool watch that a rich guy can stick in his safe and enjoy. But when an object becomes iconically important like this, it ought to be in a museum (or in this case the Rolex collection) so everyone can appreciate it from time to time. It will be sad if this disappears into someone's vault and is never seen again.

So, now that it all happened, can the ADs get their allocated pieces? Please, Rolex? :D
They would make a ton of money overnight!

on the donating to charity question: In one of the articles leading up to the sale, Nell Newman, told Cox it's his watch and do what he wants with it. He volunteered to donate a "significant amount" to the Newman Foundation. No one specified an amount. Either way, he made out just fine I believe.

So it had graced the wrist of a famous guy. Adds no value to me. Just an old watch. I wouldn't have bid $1 on it.

As much as I love automatic watches, in the end it’s just a every day production watch. My universe’s value system isn’t in the same zip code as these kind of prices for a watch. Egos and wealth pissing contests don’t interest me.

In the October issue of Vanity Fair there is another Daytona that belonged to Paul Newman, also with an engraving from his wife. The Daytona on Vanity Fair has a black dial and Rolex bracelet. I believe paying $17,000,000 for an old watch just because it belonged to an actor is outright obscene.

On CNBC, a story ran a few minutes ago that Jeff Bezos could have bought 400 PLNs just on todays gain in AMZN. So just in perspective.

Concur! I rather have a new Daytona, black dial and ceramic bezel! Only about
$16,500.

It's about so much more than just who owned it. An absurd price to be sure, but hardly shocking. It will be most interesting to see what surpasses it.

Interesting. Just read an article opining we are in a new “guilded age” of wealth where the concentration at the top hasn’t been seen since the Vanderbilts and Rockefeller's were in their hay days.

Are you sure about that? Daytona’s thrive on reputation, hype, and history (and ok killer styling) Rolex is masterful with this model. No- my 16520 will never fetch 1M. But why wouldn’t the publicity help the brand and increase demand therefore pricing?

To my eye, Paul Newman Daytonas are ugly. When they first came out, the watch buying public thought so too. Hence hardy any were bought. Most that were bought had free dial swaps to another dial at the AD.
It's obvious why collectors go gaga over it - Super rarity. However I feel non collectors cherish it for reasons other than rarity. Now I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I bet if you were to show it to 100 newcomers to watches who love watches, who do not know about the Paul Newman, they too would say yuk!
Anyway 15 mil? Hold up a Paul Newman in your right hand and a similar Paul Newman's Paul Newman in your left hand and say to the action buyer which one do you want - and they would shit themselves, because apart from the serial, they are identical.
I can understand the recent 5mil Bao Dai watch, as that's unique.
Anyway, just wanted to say my piece.
Regards
Non Paul Newman Daytons are gorgeous. I have 5.

Wonder how much it would have gone for if it had original box papers and tags.
