No way Rolex 18ct YG does this in hot tub! Draw your own conclusions from there...

Smoking thread. Assuming all 50 odd members currently viewing are hot tub owners, it's time I upped my game this summer.

With water? No. And I don't think you would want to evaporate those types of cleaning solutions, for health reasons

2 funny
Old watch with new dial and reddish lighting and he fooled a lot of people. If this is a new watch with box and papers can we see a picture of the whole package? I find it hard to believe that if this did indeed happen then why wouldn't we see a lot more like it? Sorry OP if I am mistaken but there are millions of hot tubs and never heard of this ever.
Edit: I just went back and saw your pics in the AD. I may be wrong here. But so crazy if this is legit. Also just read this: "One of the most damaging chemicals is chlorine. Chlorine in swimming pools, hot tubs, and even cleaning supplies, will attack the other metals that are alloyed with your gold" Sorry OP. I hope you get it straightened out. |

Indeed, some people have no clue or manners.
Feel sorry for the OP, I fear he'll be getting an invoice from RSC for new bezel, crown and bracelet etc. With what was clearly an abnormally high chlorine content in the hot tub, lasting damage might have already been done to the gold. Chlorine and gold less than 24 carat is not a good mix.

Not wishing to be the harbinger of bad news but go and google the effects of chlorine on gold.
It’s not good. Chlorine does in fact dissolve the other alloys present in gold jewellery, leaving behind pitting where those alloys once resided inside the gold alloy and damaging it and cracking it. Rolesor or not, even Rolex can’t manufacture a metal that defies the physical laws of the periodic table. Whereas I thought an appropriate dip may see this right, it appears the gold is going to have to be polished below its top surface to regain the original yellow colour, but that depends on how deep the chlorine water has dissolved into the metal. I’m sure Rolex will have seen this many times, but I doubt it’ll be a warranty replacement as it is chemical damage. Sounds like the hot tub had recently been given a chlorine shock, which having owned a tub in the past is a periodic maintenance procedure to prevent bugs like Legionnaires disease and other nasties forming in the pipes. I’m sorry for the OP but let’s see what RSC can do. I’m still sure they can polish it all out. |

Did you send through AD? I sent myself direct to Dallas RSC. You will hear back within 5 business days of them receiving it to understand work needed and cost. The service will take 3-4 weeks. Please keep us posted on this. |

Sorry this happened and I am curious of the outcome and wish you luck getting this sorted out.
Since you said it was a family members hot tub I would recommend getting a complete sample test. If you don't have the test kit to test for all chemicals take a sample to a pool shop and have them do it for free. While I don't have a pool company, I have serviced my personal pools all my life and have never heard of this in a swimming situation. I would think the concentration of chlorine to do this would be far to high to not cause other skin issues. Plenty of other chemicals go into a pool/hot tub to keep it balanced besides just chlorine which is why I would get a complete test. |

I wonder if it being a TT makes any difference. Some kind of chemical electrolysis between the steel and and the alloys in the gold. Almost as if the copper became a sacrificial anode for the steel.
