There's some cutting edge research underway on using the wool for mulching. It has yet to be commercialized.

In the first years I was doing this, I got my wool processed into batting for comforters. Like most infrastructure for small-scale farmers, there are now nearly no companies that handle wool processing left in the US. I had to ship it to Michigan and the result was great. Those comforters are warmer than anything, and stay clean and nice for years.

On another note, I see you're thinking of trying the property sale on your own. That's courageous--you must feel fine about there being a learning curve. It would be beyond me to feel mastery on that. I'm sure you'll have legal backup and lots of input.

Actually, I did try selling it on my own last fall but after a few weeks realized I was in over my head. It's an old thread that I was surprised to see revived yesterday.

I have a commercial real estate broker who's trying to get it sold, after a very disappointing contract bust-up with a church organization looking for a new site to build on. The property was tied up for months under that contract, and then they backed out, so we're now back to the drawing board.

Gosh the Internet makes things confusing. I knew you had a fall-through on the sale, and I just didn't think to look at the original date of that other thread. This explains it.

I'm with you, it's for a professional. Good luck!

Leo ya gotta help me with my lawn. I wanna get it looking like a bowling green.

Number 1. I need to get a decent lawnmower, my flymo is @£$%. Petrol/electric, rotary/cylinder blades?

Number 2. it is bumpy, can it be flattened. Should I hire a roller? Or do I need to relay the lawn?

Number 3. After these pics I just went over it with a scarifier so taken up alot of the dead stuff. Guessing I need to put seed/feed and water as well?

I know my garden looks shocking, will come to plants later.

I know everyone here has green fingers (even Carl)

I have brown fingers, every plant I touch seems to die.

I'm afraid I'm not a lawn expert Wes, when my father disassembled his pool we put soil on the spot where it used to be and bought rolls of grass as well as grass seeds to cover it up, it took quite a while but it seems to be doing well now, however, it's pretty much the only thing I did regarding a lawn. My only advice (if it can ever be useful) is that if you are talking about grass seeds you should be very careful as they grow very quickly and everywhere, handle them carefully because my father had bad experiences with those seeds flying around and making grass grow around plants and in places he didn't want any to grow.

I don't know if a backyard can be flattened like that but regarding the mower I personally use an electric one, it might be a pain in the neck at first because of the wire but you don't have to pay for the gas and it doesn't pollute as much or smell as bad.

...As for green fingers, I do try but must admit to my shame (and with a lot of sadness) that I lost one of my bonsai trees a few weeks ago, the poor thing didn't survive the frequent temperature changes in Trois-Rivières and even the other one (my first, the gift my brother and sister gave me) has had quite a shock, I'm looking after it and hope to be able to rescue it...

Thanks Carl.... you Bonsai murderer you.

Yeah just been checking out mowers, apparently you can get robotic mowers now that do it for you. Although she said it can't deal with steps in the garden, bit like ED-209

House of Commons or House of Lords?

This is a rhetorical question: Are there any "average working people" here who just so happen to like watches or even own a nice one? You don't have to answer that, but I seem to be surrounded by people who partake of $200+ dinners, $100+ bottles of wine, wear bespoke clothing, and have an attitude.

Is this not a forum which touts itself to be friendly and having members all over the world? Well I know the latter is true, but I'm losing faith in the former.

I feel pretty good about this sub-forum however. Maybe I'll stay here. Maybe they'll throw me out until I can post about my BMW or Audi. Maybe that won't be good enough.

I came here in 2005 when JJ Irani had a falling out somewhere else and now, well......I'm just a little discouraged.

Sorry for the rant and thanks for listening.

Stick around, Bob. There are divers, businesspeople, farmers, students, pilots, etc. on this forum. If some posting is annoying to you, look for those who seem to be content with themselves and not into one-upmanship.

--
Wes, a roller will do a good job flattening, and it can be done once in a while. But rolling also compacts the soil, which is not great for its health. You need aeration and good cutting habits, including varying its height as needed and going in different directions and the like. You need to get your soil in the best condition you can if you want its surface, i.e., grass, to look good. (Talking about home lawns. I'm sure golf courses have a completely different approach that has nothing to do with actual soil health.)

I was trying to write you something Bob, but couldn't put it better than J has.

Although I don't like some of the posts on TRF sometimes, I think the vast majority of people here are really decent folk, yes there seems to be people with money here, but I feel most don't have an attitude with it.

This is a Rolex forum after all, I guess it goes with the territory.

Thanks J, think number 1 on the agenda is get a better mower. Have been reading cut a little off tops(1/3) and often. Then maybe try flattening out. Just I don't know whether it is better to start from scratch and relay.

I don't mind people posting about luxury items I'll never be able to afford as soon as you can tell they have a real interest or a passion for it and don't just want to use them as status symbols or to brag and put themselves above others. As far as I'm concerned I know some people with big fortunes and a lot of luxury items who also happen to be some of the most laid back, down to earth and genuinely kind persons I've ever had the pleasure to talk with. Being on this forum showed me that there are indeed some pompous people on this planet (although everyday's life did show me that as well) but there are also very good people all around, I learned to choose who I wanted to hang out with and talk to.

For the record, I think the people in this thread are absolutely amazing human beings and very kind men and women, I love talking about everything in this thread and it's always great to read comments from people who seem to have a true interest for what I write. I sure hope I've never sounded or looked arrogant, pompous or overall snob with any of my posts, I'm on this forum to talk about a lot of passions I have in life (including, of course, watches and horology) and am very happy with my life filled with not very expensive items and timepieces.

I hope this rant doesn't mean that you are having a bad evening Bob, I find that you are a great man and hope you'll post in here more often.

Your first paragraph is spot-on Jay (as a lot of your posts are, if you don't mind me saying that).

As for flattening, thank you for the information as I didn't know it could be done that easily (although it does seem like one must be careful whilst doing it to avoid ruining its grass). As for golf courses, they do have a completely different approach...they much prefer to use a lot of chemicals and dangerous products in them...

Rolling isn't hard but it isn't easy either, in that it takes a very heavy piece of machinery attached to a riding tractor mower. Not like a hand-pushed tool.

Agree about the nuking of commercial courses--no model for the home lawn.

(And thanks for the nice comment about my posts...but we are all a fine bunch on this thread!)

Those conversations about gardens and backyards sure make me miss my gardening days. Soon enough (when I'll stop driving all around the province) I'll try to grow some plants in pots and leave them on a balcony so they can get plenty of fresh air and light!

In the meantime, perhaps I could try to look for real interior plants...some that barely need light. They usually aren't as nice but hey, as long as I have some to take care of.

(You are absolutely right, we are quite the bunch of nice people! )

OK I nerded out and searched on rolling, and there is in fact a hand-pushed roller. I've never seen one because out here nobody uses them, but I suppose this is a more suburbanly designed version that can do the job. Again, it's always a caveat on their value.

I know what you mean, Carl. It's just nice to have growing things, whether inside or out.

Aww thanks for all the nice things you say about me. But, I'm not gonna send you any of my nice watches. I can send you this though. It has a nice dog on the dial and the time on a smaller dial like the Lange 1.

Yes there is hand rollers, obviously suited for lawns my size.

Dunno whether I would be wasting my time with them like this dude.

Indeed, I must be careful though as my girlfriend was thinking about adopting a cat someday...I don't want him to use my plants to help him digest or pass hairballs!

Thank you kindly Wes, I appreciate the compliments and can only say the same about your posts (and occasional jokes on me...).

As for the watch, you say it looks like the Lange 1...with a puppy on it...clearly it will help me to get girls or something...

Do you know what kind of grass it is, Wes? Once you know that, you can research how to best care for it. You have the makings of a very cute yard. I don't know much else as far as advice - we have a lawn care company take care of our grass, and they do the re-seeding, fertilization, weed control, mowing, and so on. All I do is water.

Hey, Leo. Do you know what this is? I found it buried in the ashes under the old rock grill behind our garage. Apparently for many years previous owners used the grill to burn household trash. It feels lightweight (cheap!) and I wonder if it was a kids' collector series for some kind of business promotion. That's my guess, anyway.

Any thoughts? Ever seen anything like it?

Yes I see that and appreciate it.

And now that it is supposed to be 60-70 for the first time in 5 months, I have the spring chores. And on top of that I think I hosed the calendar in my PAM241 and had I realized the stinking 7750 was so touchy I would not have bought it.

I think it is called straw No, I don't know, google says most gardens in the UK have Ryegrass and Fescue. Think I will give it another year of some good cutting, seeds, scarifier and aerator. If it doesn't get better, will have to consider a relay.

The naybore doesn't mow too often....which is good because a lot of dog carp goes into orbit when he does. Fun to listen to the mower protest, however...
