Lisa and Dawna I just watched an interesting show about the dust bowl in Oklahoma on PBS. I learned a lot. I'm sure you've heard all about it but I really didn't know much. We have hurricanes and blizzards and some tornadoes but never dust storms.

I saw my first dust storm in Phoenix in 1975. Was quite an event.

We get severe thunderstorms and tornadoes but not as bad as OK, which is right in tornado alley, I think.

I can't wait for 60-70 this weekend. I don't really have any plans except to spend some time outside.

There are some amazing photo essays on the dust bowl, sepia prints that show the despair on the faces of the parents and the kids as they left the midwest, trying to find somewhere to work and eat. These people were the VERY poor, there was no welfare then, no homeless shelters, no unemployment compensation, and not even support from your church because everyone was in the same boat. We look at poverty today and think "gee, how sad" but then a lot of people died in this America. The abject poverty didn't end until around 1936, when American manufacturing started gearing up for another war. Remember back then with all that poverty and all those people with immune systems that were giving out, they were dying from simple infections. Although penicillin was discovered in the late 20s, they couldn't make it as a powder until 1940, so no magic pill for the sick.

A terrible time in US history, indeed.

I got myself a mini-sub before I had to rush up to NH. It arrived from Bahrain after only a little bit of customs stuff, likely because it doesn't say ROLEX on it. There are some advantages to that :-)

Tudor is nice but I am REALLY upset about how touchy the 7750 is. Not sure if that is what is in the Tudor, however. I STILL can't believe that the date change timing can be hosed. I can see breaking a part by forcing, but I didn't do that.

Now, in retrospect, the date change was occurring at 4:00-4:30. Carp, I should have set it so it would do that at 4:00 AM and left it at that. Well, we'll see what the watchmaker says.

Sorry for the hijack. Meds haven't kicked in yet.

That is a very lovely timepiece Mikki, I've been looking at Tudor's for a little while now but haven't found the one I want yet. Still, this brand sure knows how to make great watches!

I believe it's supposed to be 32mm but Mikki is in a better position to answer that question.

Nice score, Mikki. Tudors are awesome.

Dust Bowl - ever watched The Grapes of Wrath? My dad was born in 1922 and grew up during the worst of it. His family never left northeastern Oklahoma, however, since that part of the state fared much better than the western areas.

I have a gripe - I'm really pretty danged mad at these kids across the street. It's a bunch of college guys. One of their moms bought the house for them to live in while in school. Well, a couple of them got some idea to get out a chainsaw and trim the beautiful little shade tree in their front yard. What the heck were they thinking? What a freaking eyesore.

Okay, rant over.

I'm guessing that their reason was that they had a big noisy chainsaw they wanted to use.

Presumably they wanted to thin it out, but I don't really know. These are the same guys who will buy hundreds of dollars' worth of trees and shrubs, stick them haphazardly in the yard and flowerbeds, and then never water them so they die within months. They could have hired a professional landscaper who could have planned and planted a beautiful yard for the amount of cash they've put into their efforts.

I got caught in a huge dust storm coming back from Apache Lake 1975?
on a little Suzuki 250 trail bike on the whats now called Superstition hwy
my air cleaner clogged in a few mins and the bike died.
Long walk in a dust storm to call a buddy with a truck.....like 3+ miles
pushing the bike.
I spit out grit for months.....

I lived in Phx from 72-76 when I moved to Tucson. I went to ASU and used to ride my motorcycle out in Mesa where there were cotton fields that were irrigated. Nice at cool at night there!

I had a 75 Gold Wing which I bought for $1,995 new.

For those of you who like to know what movies I watch every now and then, I just finished watching Braveheart. I had seen a few scenes of it every now and then but, alas, could never catch the whole movie. I was quite due for it and must say I actually enjoyed it!

The ETA 7750 is reputed to be a very robust movement. I had one in my Tudor chrono. Man I loved that watch and hope someday to get it back. One idiosyncrasy is that you have to be careful when you set the time.

Its a sea of stucco now....in 80 I watched them film "Used Cars"in Mesa ...my fathers store was about 1/2 mile away from dodge dealer they filmed at.
Now its an Apt complex and the dealer closed 6 years ago.
I walked right by Kurt Russell and Deborah Harmon one day.

As a male owner of a big noisy chainsaw I can tell you that it's hard to resist the urge to cut 'one more branch'...

or tree.

My recent purchase of hedge trimmers had me temporarily more ambitious about yard work than I've been in years (since my last power tool purchase) and it was only the cover of darkness that saved my other greenery from being 'fixed' that day.

If that's the case I'm wondering why it's pretty much the only branch that's left on that tree...

Ha! Actually that's a flag hanging from the front of the house. They're nice guys, but arrgggghh.....

Bill, I think you're right... "just one more branch!" Shortly after we moved in, Dave, in a most unusual flurry of outside activity never to be seen again, cut down a huge fig tree and two redbuds in the back yard. All I could say was, "Why?" I think the answer was... power tools.
