Nutella content: I have to say that of the many joys of the beautiful city of Florence, the one I least expected was that its downtown smells of Nutella. That is correct. There's a stand that sells Nutella on freshly made waffles to businesspeople in the mornings, and the fragrance is overpowering.

Nutella waffles, do I want to taste one of those? I think so!

What I can't figure is how you walk around eating a Nutella waffle and not wind up completely coated. But boy was it tempting. Plus, the stand had the biggest jar I've ever seen of Nutella as its advertisement, I mean it probably held 5 gallons. Yowza!

That's it, I know what I'm putting on my toasts tomorrow morning (and I sure wish I could find such a big jar of that delicious chocolate butter...)!

Getting coated is a problem indeed, especially when you grow a mustache and a beard like me (mind you, they aren't that bad now but I want them to be rather long)...still, it's quite worth it in my book!

So at around 6:30 this morning I notice Murphy staring out the window rather intently and asking to go out.
Not a good sign.
I look out the window and see the mangiest looking fox trotting down the street in broad daylight kind of funny. A bit askew actually.
I said to the family "Hey look at the mangy looking fox." to which my son replied "Hey that's the 3 legged fox that I'd told you about."
He'd seen it about a month ago 3 blocks up - closer to the pond and woods. Now I'm sure he's at a disadvantage but he is keeping himself alive. I'm just not crazy about him wandering around my neighborhood with my friendly chubby cat. She's known to lay in the road, meow, and roll over on her back for belly rubs. Let's face it - we all do that but now I'm concerned for her well being. That fox has to be clever or desperate - maybe both. Murphy would jump the fence and shred it if he could. That's just his terrier ways. I worry about his safety too. Don't want to see him get hurt either.
I'm going to have to keep a lookout from now on. It's getting wild in the suburbs.

I would be highly concerned about rabies. That is not normal behavior at all. Might want to call your wildlife officer and report it, especially if you can detect any pattern to when it shows up.

EDIT: Seems like Jay beat me to it with another one of her great answers and suggestions.

That sounds rather scary Bill, is there any place you can call to have that animal moved further from your neighborhood? In a forest nearby perhaps?

I know there's a few people who do that in Montreal (or, at least, that's what I've heard), they will relocate raccoons and other animals who can become potentially dangerous to domestic animals and people in their backyards (some people told me that they were actually killed rather than moved but I believe this is probably an urban legend more than anything else, I believe a friend of mine's father call them once to relocate a raccoon he trapped in a cage in his backyard, the animal was a bit too close to his house so he managed to trap it without hurting it and called some people to ahve it moved).

As far as I know foxes are rather clever indeed and if this one managed to survive albeit having lost a leg I'm sure he must be quite a good one. Besides, not that I want to get paranoid but wild animals sometimes carry diseases or bacterias and the last thing you want is to have them give those things to your animals.

Yes.
He wasn't staggering or zigzagging - just limping. Still I will be watching for him from now on and Lucy the cat will not be going out until later in the morning.
We've been seeing a lot more foxes around lately. Rumor is there's a mama fox and kits in a yard 2 blocks farther down. This is not wilderness or even country.

I like to lay in the road until someone stops and rubs my belly. Wendy wishes I would quit doing that.

Wendy doesn't understand the life of an alpha male, I bet she told you to stop hugging bears as well!?

My belly is getting rubbed plenty around here! I just need to lay underneath the polishing lathe and let the brushes do the job...

...Ah, the life of a watchmaker!

You just gave me a To Kill a Mockingbird moment. "Mr. Finch! Mr. Finch! I swear to God there's mad dog coming up the street!"

Maybe he's learned that it's easier to get food in residential areas - leftover bowls of dog food, trash cans... I'd definitely call animal control. Of course, he won't show up when they come looking for him.

Sunny and warm here. It's supposed to get up into the 70's (F). Definitely a 'commute by motorcycle' day.

Funny, it's the exact same thing around here...minus the Sun...the heat...and the motorcycle!

No fox this morning, not that Murphy wasn't bugging all morning looking for it. That dog is tenacious.
He'll be bugging about it for a week or more.

How about you? For how many days are you going to look through your window and bark?

...Now if you'll excuse me, I have the back of my ear to scratch!

Good news regarding the fox (of lack thereof), I hope he found another place to stay...far from your house and street!

You'd better watch out for that fox. They are very cunning.

Has anyone seen Fantasic Mr Fox? Very good.

Really like Mr. Fox.

Wes, thanks for the "idyllic" comment. It can be, but only after putting in a certain amount of labor. Where oh where are my serfs? Oops--I are one.

My mum grew up on a small farm in Ireland. She has 9 other brothers and sisters. Only one uncle went into farming probably saw how much hard work it is.

That's exactly what my dad said - so much hard work. He was one of 13 kids and he said the only reason he was born was to work in the fields - free labor. He got out of there, joined the service and went to college. Funny enough, in his late 40s he bought a small acreage, planted a little orchard, big garden, and got a couple of horses. Went back to his roots, but on a smaller scale. Some of his siblings stayed farmers, though.

In all developed parts of the globe people leave farming for comfort, so that's not unusual, but there's a lot about the way of life that sticks fondly with people, even generations removed.

We hobbyists are really small potatoes compared to those who earn their livings this way. But I know a lot of young modern farmers, and it's a different world, how they approach things. For one, they're college educated, and they are very connected outward, using GPS technology, etc.

Had to trim the Maxpuss's fur last night. So today I referred to "deferred revenue" as "shaved revenue" and got a few raised eyebrows, which isn't unusual. We still have a few burrs to get out of the Maxpuss tonight.

My nephews (in law) are farming the old home farm. The niece went to college and is on the verge of getting a PhD in Human Resources, whatever that is.

At OSU, in the 1980s, many, many of the kids were agriculture majors. I'm sure most of them came from farming families, and they were learning the latest in farming technology and animal husbandry. The world needs food - where else is it going to come from? Farmers have my complete respect and admiration.

Poor fox. I feel terrible for him. FWIW, we have several fox, and they have never bothered the outdoor cat or my dogs. If it were me, I'd put some food out for the poor thing.

The first two years at OSU I was an Ag Econ major.....later I transferred to School of Biz and was just and Econ major....
If I would have stayed married to my ex I might have ended up working for the State of OK in Ag business ....her family had about 2k+ acres of wheat and Cattle in the middle of nowhere ....she went to high school in Taloga OK

I didn't grow up on a farm, but The Rodentwoman did. Her parents had a small dairy farm which her 2 brothers took over. They parlayed that into more land and a much larger operation and are now in their 70's so their kids, my nephews-in-law, if that's technically correct, run the place. They have milked up to 200 cows from time to time.

There is a farm about 100 miles from them which is going to have something like 5,400 cows.
