Looks nice, one of berts?. It seems a lot at first but like you say, it’s finding a nice one. I know if I had the money I’d have as close to NOS versions of each, it’s easy to forget these are 50 years old and Seiko’s back then are really beautiful watches. It’s hard to value them as there’s not exactly many true minters available to compare.

Taking inflation into account I bet that’s not that for off it’s original price when you think about it. Be nice to pick up some 50 yr old Rolexes that have just tracked inflation.

Yup, one of Bert's. I'd love to know where he sources some of his stuff they're usually incredible. His personal collection must be insane.

If I learned anything from collecting Rolex it's just buy exactly what you want and be willing to pay up for a perfect one. It'll save me the questions in the future. Buy once cry once.

I wore my first Seiko diver’s. It was in my last years in the AF reserve. As an IMA I had to attend a base security training course. It was at an installation north of Las Vegas in the desert. It had rocks, sand as fine as graphite, temperatures ranging from the 30’s night to 70’s day, plus snow. I mention all this because this it what a watch would have to contend with. Immediately I said no to taking any Rolex. I found that the base exchange had several Seikos. I bought a diver for my desert excursion. Fifteen days later we came in. I showered along with my Seiko. It was running fine and no sign of wear.

$1700 for a Pogue??? Damn they are stupid now. I remember just a few years ago I couldn't sell them for $400 and they were freshly serviced.

In all honestly the Pogue is a cool watch, but it is a $400 watch at the most. I can't believe people are trying to get rich off of them.

$400, good luck with that these days. That’ll get you either a beaten to death watch with a polished case and knackered dial or a watch with fake dial/bezels.

Really they’re about a $800-$1000 Watch in today’s money if you take inflation into account we’re just used to them trending way below that. Also, if Seiko re-released them today they’d have none of the great details of the originals (applied logo, hour markers, different finishes on each side of the day/date window etc) and they would be $4k.

It’s not for me spending big money on them but that’s because I bought mine at a time when they weren’t this money. If I was getting into them today I’d have to or not at all. In the grand scheme they’re still under valued in general. I reckon you could get a really nice example for under $1k and in the vintage watch world for such an iconic watch it’s peanuts really. I could still buy a slightly rough original here in the uk for about £250-£400 I’d say.

Some of the stuff on eBay is a joke, I often follow them just to see what people are blindly buying. This for example, £450! what’s the $650? for a horrible fake dial, and hands.




My blue one I posted above I think I pad about £180 for! But those days are long gone and the people faking the hell out of them are just pushing the prices of nice ones higher and higher.

I don't disagree that it's crazy, but I'm willing to do it. I also spent $600 on a absolutely mint Bell-Matic which is easily double what they normally sell for. I'd rather spend the money now on something mint and not question my decision at all than settle for something.

I agree. I have a few and love them. The yellow dial non-Pogue variety go for a bit more. I recently bought one for $450 and it just needed a new crystal (and a service) but the rest was all original and in wonderful unpolished shape. Genuine silver dial ones go for a tad more. I'm keeping my eyes peeled. I want one of every dial color.

True Pogues ("Resist", Suwa logo, "17j" and "chronograph" dial markings) I see going in the $800+ area and the Speed Timers go north of a $1K. I collect the 6139 Speed Timers and need that yellow one.

I think someone who paid that absurd sum for Spencer's Pogue was buying his name with it. I've seen a NOS one go for less.

I think you read my post incorrectly. I said I think they are a $400 watch at the most. When they were produced they were not a high end watch by any means. I just sold one of my Pogue's last year for $380. And that is what it was worth to me. It was also all original except for the crystal.

A Bell-matic is a better watch than the Pogue. The movement is also finished better. But a Bell-matic is harder to service.

Pay what ever you feel comfortable with, it doesn't guarantee you are getting a watch that isn't going to cost a small fortune to service. Good luck.
