Lisa, do they get to be out on the ground a lot? They are bug eaters, as you know. Yum yum.
Do you guys know about chicken tractors? That's a big thing with the local small farmers. They are on grass that way and hence have access to the bugs they love. I can't tell if they need that kind of confinement in your yard, probably not. And I wonder if this gizmo is a silly human trick altogether. LOL |

I had to google it. Makes good sense.
The only concerns I'd have in the city environment are the pesticides/lawn chemicals Lisa may or may not use and the chickens 'polluting' the lawn only due to the young kids playing in the same space. Otherwise yeah let them eat as many bugs as they can find.

We're still figuring out how to build their run, J. Translate: trying to motivate hubby to help me build it. At the moment they're still in the brooder indoors, though I let them out 3 or 4 times a day when it's warm. In the pic, they're sitting in the rabbit hutch where we stuck them for a few minutes just for fun. Leah was unimpressed. We modified a large dog house for them to roost in at night when they're big enough (and they almost are), but we want it to connect to a large area of grass they can roam around in that's enclosed to keep them safe from predators. We may consider a wire dog run if Dave doesn't want to build something.
Trouble with our yard is that one side isn't fenced at all and another side (the chain link) would be easy for them to get through. I have heard about chicken tractors but our sprinkler system might make such a thing tricky to navigate. No matter what we end up doing in the way of containing them, we're outdoors a lot in the summer, especially in the evenings, and I imagine we'd let them have the entire backyard to explore when we're there to supervise. |

^^Good point, Bill.
Lisa I'm sure you'll come up with a good solution. Yes, grass will make them happy and healthy. BTW you can always add chicken wire to the chain link, to "smallen up" the grid, if you decide to build off of it. |

Lawn chemicals - yes, probably a concern. We may designate a chemical free area.

The girls don't need that exposure either, it goes without saying. Sorry, I am reliably tedious on the issue.

Yes, understood. I am torn between wanting a pretty yard and limiting exposure to my kids and the birds. With all the rain we've had (and are having today) surfaces are clear. However, there is probably some root uptake of fertilizer and weedkiller in the grass that the chicks are eating.

We all do what we can, and you are thoughtful about all that. The chickies look swell. I bet the girls are having a ball with them.

Thanks for the pics Lisa. How long before you start getting some eggs? Must be looking forward to your first boiled egg. Do you guys dip soldiers in them?
Mmmm, might have that for breaky tomorrow. |

That looks good and right up my alley. I'm a food dipper from way back.

Does look good, Wes. How cute are you? Breaky and soldiers.
Would ya'll believe I've never ever had a soft boiled egg? Not sure why! I like poached, hard boiled, fried, scrambled.... anything. I should try one tomorrow. Oh - almost forgot - they should start laying eggs by later summer. |

Me three. Never. They kinda look, um, gooey. I like scrambled eggs, but I really have to talk myself into eating any other kind. And Wes, what the heck is a soldier? The dipping kind, anyway

Count me in at number four...never had a soft boiled egg and also am not a fan of egg salad sandwiches as well. But I do like eggs most other ways such as hard boiled(with salt and pepper), scrambled, easy over or sunny-side up or in a breakfast casserole!!!
Take it easy(over).....Leo

WOW, some of you have never had soft boiled eggs. What do you use your egg timers for, or chronographs?
Soldiers are just bread, or toast, cut into thin strips for dipping in the egg. Don't forget add some salt/pepper and butter. |

Or is it because boiled is a meal that is exclusive to some sort of elite? That would make a lot of sense...

Wes, I've had a soft boiled egg before! Had to chime in!
Maybe it's more of an English/South African thing? Anyway, it's been years since I had it....may need to try again one of these days. Quite tasty! |

Scrambled eggs. At someone's picnic, deviled eggs (but I won't make them). And that is all.

The eyes and the tail. Tick tock tick tock. Same company's been making them since the 1930s (with electric plug in cord). I fell in love with these a zillion years ago.
An "action" pic, lol: |
