Lisa,
I'd love to see a pic of Dave's GMT!
Chicken nirvana in your back yard now, too, wow!

Lisa, Dave did a seriously good job with the coop. All the beveled beading to the hatches, hinged bits and what not. Finally he made good use of all the power tools in the basement.

Still don't know what a roasting bar is?

The roosting bar is just something for them to perch on at night. Chickens like to sleep a little elevated - they feel safer.

A roasting bar might be where chickens go when they stop laying?

Dave will enjoy knowing you guys appreciated his work. So did I.

Wes, you had asked about them tunneling out - predators tunneling in is more of a worry. Today I got the materials to keep raccoons and similar pests from digging underneath - 20 feet of metal landscape edging and concrete edging. I'm digging a trench all the way around the pen and house, burying the edging and topping it with the concrete. That should put about 8 inches of solid material underground to keep digging varmints out. I'm not much good with power tools (though I did paint everything and hold boards when asked!) but I can do manual labor well enough.

Boy does that watch look good!

The GMT-Master is one heck of a nice model, I'd love to have one someday (perhaps a two-tone for me though...you know me...).

I used to have a real problem here with skunks living under the sheds, and screen house. For the first couple of years in the neighborhood (we rented the house next door before buying this one) we couldn't spend any time in the yard after dark, had to shake keys and make noise when entering the gate, couldn't let the dogs out on their own (Daisy, my Basset hound, got sprayed twice). I even had to have Wendy let me in the front door because a skunk was camped out near the back door we usually use.
So here's what I did:
I bought a roll of stucco mesh. The stuff is really strong, vents air and can be easily cut using sheet metal shears (scissors for metal - cool right?).
I bent it into an L shape it then covered the L with bricks all along the perimeter. Critters will try to burrow under the mesh but by bending it L style it forces them to move farther backward away from the wall. By putting the bricks on top it also keeps the critter from bending the mesh. Gravity and weight are the critter's enemy here. Cover with dirt and you're in business. .
It obviously worked very well. Hope this helps.

Wes, thank you for the compliments and again now I'm feeling bad cause it didn't occur to me when I wrote "that"...that there was a language barrier with you of course living across the ocean and not being familiar with all our 'slang' here!!!

Take care my friend.....Leo

I understand exactly your explanation, Bill. It sounds like what lots of the chicken forum people do to their coops. Varmints aren't smart enough to start digging a ways out from the vertical wall - they'll dig right up next to it and hit the horizontal wire mesh. I thought about burying some 1/2 inch hardware cloth but decided the steel landscape border would work just as well. It's a bugger to cut - tin snips didn't even dent it but Dave was able to hacksaw one piece in half, which was all I needed him to do since two 8 foot lengths and two 4 foot lengths were perfect to surround the pen and house.

I got three of the trenches dug today and set the border into them. In the morning I'll do the last side. Then I'll put the concrete edging on top of those and bury them halfway.

Digging and hacking through tree roots is a pain, but great exercise!

There are chicken forums? Cool!
What do they discuss there? Breading vs pan frying?

Lisa do you know what the best power tool of all is?

It's an air compressor.

Does Dave have one yet? Oh the fun he would have.
Socket gun, air ratchet, die grinder, air chisel, cut off wheel, air chuck. These are a few of my fav-o-rite things.
I just have a small hobby sized (5hp, ~30 gallon) one from Sears. I keep it at 90 psi and it gets used more often than you would ever think.

Take care as well my friend!

As for working too hard...do I really look like a guy who works at all?

That actually reminds me that I should probably work on a thread about my progression at school...I keep forgetting the things I want to show at school so I cannot take any pictures...

Gents, think we should all slap ourselves on the back for being all round good guys

In fact I think we should have a coffeeshop "Guy of the year award" as voted for by the ladies of the coffeeshop.

Okay guys, I'm in my apartment and I hear a girl screaming and arguing rather loudly with someone else outside of my building (funny thing is, she screams so loudly that I cannot even hear the other person...perhaps she's talking out loud...). For ten points, should I go outside and sit on my front steps with a bag of popcorn or would this put me in trouble?

Ha ha - I just hollered down the basement steps.

"Dave, how many air compressors do you own?"

"I have three. I gave two away a while back. Why?"

"Just wondering!"
