But seriously, how fantastic to see the best of the best. My folks took in My Fair Lady, Oliver, etc. The first LPs I can remember in my household were the albums of whatever musicals they saw.

I recorded Oliver (the movie) when it was on TV. My boy busted my chops saying it sounded lame.
I watched it once and saved it, then he watched it with me. Ha! Dad's not so lame after all.

When I see a supposed guy act like that, even on the Internet or TV, I have no respect for them. Now if you took that out of the musical it would be much shorter too. I had the same problem with West Side Story and Footloose back when my sister wanted to watch them and we only had one TV. Now granted I know in the movies and on stage it's just an act and the men are no doubt very talented, I just don't wan to watch it and that's ok. As for the real life supposed men who act like that - well gee, I'm working on my tolerance.
Now it's not all musicals I dislike of course. I liked The Nightmare Before Christmas movie, Fiddler on the Roof was pretty good and IMO Legally Blonde was very clever and well done. I like clever. Giving credit where credit is due.
I just can't make myself believe that Rodgers OR Hammerstein ever actually met a cowboy. I'm not sure who that musical is about, but I think they sort of missed the general vibe of the actual Oklahoma.

Oh, well. At least we have the most readily-recognized state song.

Someday I would love to explore Oklahoma and spend some time in that beautiful state. All I've ever done is drive straight through as I headed to Texas and then on to New Mexico. And with Dawna talking about Arizona and the Grand Canyon I would love to go to both places someday as well. There is so much to see in our great country that you could spend many years exploring and never see everything.....

Take it easy.....Leo

You should, Leo! You totally miss all the good stuff about this state if you only get to see it from the interstates. Those flat plains are a small part of the state, really. We actually have small mountain ranges, lots of rolling hills, tons of trees, many, many beautiful lakes, rivers, and even cowboys that don't resemble the kind from the musical. :)

I'm excited about heading over to AZ. Since we will be in the northern part of the state, it's supposed to be a few degrees cooler than the scorching weather they are already having in the southern parts.

Dawna, seeing Oklahoma is definitely on my short list of places to see. And thinking about people's perceptions of states and what they know about them...most everyone thinks of Illinois as being flat and growing crops of corn and soybeans. Even though this is true(for most of the state), once you get down toward the last 60 miles you have the hills of the Ozarks and beautiful scenery and places to see. The Shawnee National Forest is simply amazing to see and there is so much to do from hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and rock climbing to all kinds of other activities.....

Dawna, enjoy your trip and have fun.....Leo

That is just incredible...

If everything goes as expected I should go back to my friend's cottage shortly, forests like the one in your picture can be seen pretty much all the way as you are driving there. Boy do I love forests and nature!

Lisa, thanks for showing that pic. That place looks amazing. One could leave the cell phone behind and disappear for a month wondering around there.

I must google and see what our state song is. I know the bird is the mockingbird, the state stone is the moonstone, the state flower is the orange blossom. If you have never smelled an orange blossom that is something you must do at some time in your life. Amazing.

There's a show on the History Channel called Mountain Men...where they show men and some with families living off the land. From the "Big Sky" country to Alaska and to the Appalachian Mountains. i've watched it twice and it looks kind of interesting to see how different people cope with nature and it's elements. But to me there is a charm to living in the great wide open even though living this way is not without danger(s). But just think clear, clean water in the creeks and rivers and no air pollution from industry and cars.....

Our State Flower-Purple Violet Viola
Our State Tree-Quercus alba(White Oak)
Our state Song-"Illinois"

Leo, I have to tell you the drive from O'Hare to Moline is - how can I put it - FLAT and BORING!! There is no other way to describe it. Having done it two months ago, on my way to Davenport for a family weekend and then back again, that's the best I can say about it.

As J said yesterday...I'm as old as "Dirt"......

It's kind of funny but back in college when I took my first course in Soil Science the two teachers said that if they caught anyone in class calling it "Dirt" instead of "Soil" they would be expelled from class and would have to take it over again. Well since everyone in the School of Agriculture had to take this class, as it was a mandatory requirement course for graduation, there were a few who flunked while I was attending school. The class was taught in a large auditorium where we had at least 300 students taking the course at a time!!!

Their definition, "Soil is used to grow crops whereas Dirt is what you bring inside under your finger nails"

I totally agree with you...all you see are crops of corn and soybeans and flat...flat...and flat. But once you get about 300 miles south of Chicago the countryside is as beautiful as anywhere in the world....

The saying here about corn is "it should be knee high by the fourth of July".....

I admit it, I like bird watching.

I saw this nesting pair this morning right in Orlando, this was the best shot I could get, they are fast flyers and on the move. I have never seen this type of bird. I will look in my book later today. Some kind of sparrow, wren or warbler maybe. There were quite of few of them nesting in an old warehouse.

The female and nest.

When I worked for the tourism department, a park ranger told me the SE Oklahoma wilderness is full of real mountain men. And probably Sasquatch, too.
