Morning all, the sun is shining and temperatures are going to hit the 90's today...nice and warm.....

Carl, had a chance to listen to your piece...very nice and I enjoyed it immensely. Reminded me very much of jamming back in the late 1960's in basements with friends or in garages in the summertime. What kind/type of guitar are you using? Definitely can hear your blues influence blended into a rock piece where you can improvise in any direction you want to go in. Brings back many memories and hours spent listening to music which is a passion of mine. I like most all music from Gospel to Classical.....

We had a radio station on FM which came on only at 10PM on Sunday evenings back in 1969(or was that 1968?) which played Underground Rock for one half hour. They would play groups like Pink Floyd(before they became famous) and Soft Machine...to name a couple. Rock music was only being played on AM radio at that time and had not crossed over to FM so this was quite a treat. In Chicago, on North Wells St., was Old Town(only about 4 or 5 blocks long) and that is where you went for clothes(of the times), Heavy Metal Rock music(and the Underground groups) and they had the Head shops and such.....a great place to spend the day and listen to some great music. That is where I picked up my first Bootleg albums!!!

Thank you Leo and it's always interesting to read stories from your hippie/rocker youth. I used a Gibson Les Paul Traditional in this one plugged in a Marshall amplifier through a Marshall Bluesbreaker (a regular overdrive pedal), it's the guitar on which I play the most although I have a few other ones.

Rock music has been playing in my headphones for quite a few years now, my father introduced me to it as he spent his teenage years listening to anything from Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Young and Janis Joplin. He told me his generation followed the hippies and were then followed by the heavy metal fans, he was more of a "freak" with his construction boots, suede jackets, jeans and checkered shirts.

I too preferred the Rock/Hippie music(he and I must be about the same age)from the 1960's and as I said by 1973 I was listening to Jazz full time. By the early 1970's there was just not a lot of good Rock music I liked so I started hanging with a different crowd who were into all the Jazz genre(Be bop, Hard Bop and such.....).

As for Heavy Metal, that sound got its start in the late 1960's with groups such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Cream. So really at the time there was a blend of the "San Francisco Sound", the "LA sound" and the "British Invasion sound". Then you had the "Southern Rock" influence along with many from Canada adding their input so there were a lot of "Sounds and Music" blending together. The explosion of music in the 1960's was absolutely the best time to be alive and listening to music...so much to see and listen too(and not enough time...).....and concerts were cheap compared to today. How about $3.00, $4.00 and $5.00 tickets to see big name rock groups!!!

In 1963, I used to go to bed listening to a transistor radio(it was on all night) and went through 9-volt batteries like crazy.....received my first portable, plastic turntable in 1964, so I wouldn't use my parents stereo and bought my first high quality radio in about 1967!!!

As for the clothes I wore then and still do and prefer today is T-Shirts, Blue Jeans(Levi's), Flannel shirts when it's cool outside or Wintertime...boots(construction or something like Red Wing's) in Winter and Sandals(Birkenstocks...well worth the price) in summer.....

I knew your sound sounded very familiar...I never played guitar(and do not know a lot about but I do know the sound I like), just a little Blues Harp. But my very good friend who owns a Tattoo Shop and does Tattooing(and an excellent Artist at drawing and has done many of my Tattoos) is also a guitarist extraordinaire and is in a few bands and plays in bars and night clubs(and does Summer Festivals and Private parties as well). He has over 40 guitars(very expensive ones) and 20 amps or so and also prefers playing Gibson Les Paul's through Marshall Amps. I'll have to ask him for you what ones he likes the most. I do know it depends on the "Gig" he's doing and whether he is playing Rhythm, Lead or Bass guitar. He also plays Mandolin and Banjo as well.....

Now as for "Rock N Roll" we all know its roots comes from American Blues and American Jazz...and many of the great bands from Great Britain(The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton just to name a few.....)would listen to all the OldTime Blues greats to form their own sound!!!

Take care and plays us some more music when you have a chance in your busy schedule.....Leo

Leo, I remember when FM radio was just getting started. I listened to WKY on AM. It was such fun to fiddle with the transistor radio late at night, when you could get stations from far away.

Bootleg record albums... that brings back memories! Dave had a few of those - he still has them somewhere. One of them is a pretty rare Ozzy Osbourne/Randy Rhoades album.

Les Paul guitar and Marshall amps - no better combo for rock and roll!

I like family pics, too, Carl. I also like pics of the actual members here, but you wouldn't know about that, would you?

Nancy wears a handsome Hamilton watch. It's two tone and looks a lot like a Lady DJ. I think it was none the worse for wear with those little chicken feeties on it.

My niece (isn't she a pretty thing?) was the one who lost her/boyfriend's house in the Moore tornadoes. Her boyfriend is in the background of the pic. They're staying with my sister in law (pink shirt) while they try to find a rental house and decide whether to rebuild or move to our side of town (I'd vote for the latter).

It's good knowing that younger people appreciate old rock and roll, Carl. Good for your dad to share it with you. He's probably about my age - I was in high school when the "freak" boots and flannel shirts were in (for boys AND girls). Being a 1981 high school grad, I liked bands like Journey, Van Halen, Heart, Kansas, The Babies, Little River Band, The Tubes, Fleetwood Mac, and Boston. And New Wave had kind of niche popularity - I actually attended a Devo concert in Oklahoma City in about 1981.

For me it was Rush, Yes, Aerosmith, David Bowie, Styx, Van Halen Ted Nugent, Humble Pie and Jimi Hexdrix to name a few. Yes was the best concert that I have been to. I did find the whole concert on You Tube from 1979. Nugent was the loudest. My ear still hurts from that concert. It was way too loud.

I always like to hear Robin Trower play the guitar. But he was never that popular.

Glad you liked the pic. Nancy raised chickens as a kid... she was a very good sport.

June and Violet's birthdays are a week apart, so this weekend get-together made sense. June turned 10 last Friday and Violet will turn 6 this coming Friday. And Nancy's birthday next week, too!

Yes, when those chickens get all in your face climb all over you, flapping and peeping, it can be just a little unnerving!

Lisa, family get togethers are always a lot of fun and your family's chickens were quite the hit of the party. Do your girls mind sharing a party with their birthdays being so close together? Just wondering because my older brother and I are 6 days apart and we too shared a lot of family gatherings!!!

As for Bootleg Albums down in Old Town(Chicago) there were I believe three stores which carried them and they had quite a few from all the groups of the day. Also down in Piper's Alley one store carried all the Underground Albums coming out of Great Britain mainly and they cost a little more money. And of course from most all of the stores the smell of incense would carry heavy in the air. And as for Head Shops...you could find just about everything you wanted. But "Bongs" only came in one type of material.....bamboo.....and clothing stores had all kinds of bright colorful clothing and the fashion was one of colors and patterns which really did not go together. Do you remember Nehru jackets???

I do remember Nehru jackets, Leo. I was a little after the height of that era, but I do remember! I think I got a lot of my '60s hippie information from reading my sister's old "MAD" magazines. Now, I did have some loud plaid hip hugger bell bottoms, which I wore with a macrame belt. I thought I was a pretty cool middle schooler.

Wes, I know I'm late to reply but I really did enjoy your last song that you played for us. There is just something about the acoustic or electric piano sound which strikes a cord of content and joy when you hear a song.....it's so versatile and each person who plays adds their own creativity and inflection.........

Thanks, Art! Dog and Butterfly - what a great album.

I saw Heart in the 1990s - Ann can still rock the house with that voice.

I had backstage passes to Van Halen... saw Valerie Bertinelli and got sprayed with Eddie's sweat while he was standing on a huge speaker cabinet during a guitar solo (I was standing below looking up at him). How's that for a memorable evening!?

Saw Journey, too - they sold out three shows in OKC in the 1980s. I think it was the Escape tour but am not completely sure! Has there ever been a rock voice to equal Steve Perry's?

I enjoyed concerts to back in the day. Eddie looks like he's 90 yrs old now. That must have been a cool experience. Yes, Steve Perry, what a voice. I still like hearing them on the radio. I had tickets to see Heart and Kansas once and never made it to the arena. Oh, I had a bootleg tape of VH years ago, it was very good.

Obviously I'm biased and of course we all think that our era was the best but I really do think the 60's set the tone for everyone to follow. The music explosion(started in the 1950's)and the life style created an environment of experimentation which included "sexual freedom", use of mood altering chemicals and just the thought and notion, "that we could change the world".....how naive our generation was. Change happens slowly and only when those who seek it become old enough to be in positions of power to orchestrate "that change".......

Being in Chicago in 1968 during the Democratic Convention and the rioting which developed and occurred really opened up my eyes.....you had the "SDS" and the "Weathermen" all manipulating the masses to incite to riot all across America with the world watching to see what would happen next. I know that once the rioting began I got my a$$ out of the city and stayed on the sidelines until it was over. And then the arrests and the "Chicago Seven Trial"(even tho there were eight involved) making 'Headline News' each night and again the world watched as the events unfolded.....the "Rallies" during the trial and the masses of young who congregated in the Loop(which I also took part in ditching school) and the police lines in riot gear.....these pictures will always be in my thoughts and have left their mark(s)on my psych!!!

But the music remains and the memories of the music have always been good as music transcends time and is there for all eternity. It's kind of funny and ironic but my son, who did not listen to my generations' music(even tho it was there by the stereo for him to listen to)took a class in College on the History of Rock Music. And he would call me to discuss the music as he discovered each new group and sound and did I know of them or her or him. It was fun to listen to him and the excitement in his voice as a whole new world opened up. Then he took the next course in the History of Jazz Music and our discussions again took shape with the awe and wonder in his voice.....

As has been said, "youth is wasted on the young" but I disagree...it's all part of the learning process and growing up. And as long as you can keep music in your heart you will turn out just fine.........

Take it easy.....Leo

Thank you for thinking about asking your tattoo artist some information for me Leo, I appreciate the thought!

My father keeps telling me he went to see the Stones and paid 40$ for his ticket back in the 1980's, it's quite crazy when you think about all the money I spent for the shows I've been to (mind you, they were all...or almost...well worth it)!

It's really nice to read your posts about the history of rock and roll, I've read so many things about old blues artists and British, American or Canadian bands' history but there's nothing like reading it from somebody who lived it all back then. Thank you for sharing your rocking wisdom!

You got that right my dear!

Hamilton makes quite some nice watches indeed, I've been looking at their vintage ones for quite a long time though as I was considering adding one to my collection but the one I want is very, very hard to find!

Your mother in law's looks pretty nice from what I can see and by your description!

I'm very sad that your niece's boyfriend's house got destroyed by the tornadoes, I do wish them to find another place to live soon but it's very nice of your sister in law to take care of them in the meantime. I must also agree with you, your niece is a pretty woman indeed.

P.S.: Alright alright, you win...this picture was taken during one of my workout sessions...

I won't guess anything about your age but my father will be 54 later this year, he did enjoy a few bands you wrote in your post but Joplin, Hendrix, Young, Winter and Led Zeppelin were always his all-time favorites, he could (and still can) listen to them all day, everyday! It's also what we play when we jam together, there's so many songs to choose from and even if we only play a mere blues in E he'll manage to put a touch of those artists in his playing (after all, those were his mentors when he learned the guitar).

As for younger people who like rock music, I know a few of them and it is always nice to talk to them and discover new bands or artists, rock and roll will never die!

Here's the irony...I was given their Sticky Finger's album as a gift and the first party I had in my room in college it was "Sticky Fingered" during the party.....go figure!!!

I also have always enjoyed the group, Yes, spent many hours listening to them and I have many of their albums.....I have a very decent turntable with a very good cartridge and needle and since each time you play an album you wear into the groove with the diamond needle...I do not play my albums much these days to save on the wear and tear. Also it's very difficult to buy original replacements of the albums and the cartridge and needle.....but I do play them every so often!!!

Take it easy.....Leo
