Save me some chocolate for after the show. I'm going to Las Vegas in August, and who cares if I can fit into my costume then? Hee hee.

We are running 5 nights during Fringe. It'll be really fun. It's our second time this year for this show, so it won't even be too terrible regarding rehearsals, etc.

It's set in 1969, so I can wear any watch older than that. Yay!

[QUOTE=Lisa;4237210]Note to J and Dawna.... in Colorado Springs we found the old Van Briggle factory building, now in use by, I think, the University of Colorado.

I have a circa 1910 postcard of the building when it was in operation... what a thrill it was to find this place. The vase I have on the dining room table was most certainly made here. I can die happy.

WOW. I can't believe I just saw this. Did you know it was there??
How COOL!

Just got back a short while ago from Ethan's baseball game. A miserable night with drizzle and fog. Chilly and raw. Not a very good night for baseball...

... Which is why I'm so glad I went. Ethan had a freaking awesome game!

He pitched 6-1/3 innings - 95 pitches (pitch count limit for 16y/o) with 14 strikeouts. He hit 2 triples, a single and had one strikeout. He scored twice and drove some runs in. He even stole home in a suicide squeeze, which was fun to watch as its not a common play.
Yep - it was a good game.

I thought maybe it was still there... all I knew for certain was that the building was in Colorado Springs, but I wasn't positive it was still standing (so many of those old pottery buildings caught fire). Thanks to google we were able to do some quick research and find its location. And correction; it's now owned by Colorado College and in operation as a maintenance building or some such thing. The pics I took are of the back of the building. We couldn't get to the front as it was after hours and the gated parking area was locked. I hope that on our next trip there we can get there before the building closes and actually go inside.

Didn't I read that the original Frankoma pottery factory in Sapulpa burned back in the 80's?

So cool! I knew Van Briggle was in business but not that the old building was around. I mentioned a while back that the company is possibly going to reissue a large old vase I had that they didn't have in their archival files. I have a recent VB vase in the turquoise, still lovely. There's just something about their forms and glazes.

On the Antiques Road Show recently they had one of the original Lorelei vases, and it was worth big money.

I would like to ask you Ladies(and educate me) about these brands of "Antique Pottery" that were made years ago. Were their pieces made with a mold or were they hand thrown on a wheel? Are they considered "Stoneware" or are they "Earthenware" pieces. What kind of clay was used and where did it come from? Were the pieces(or some of them) made with Porcelain clay(which is considered Stoneware when fired) and what types of glazes did they use? Lastly, what makes these pieces so valuable and collectible today compared to others that were made and produced back then???

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated because I do know about more recent Pottery pieces and how they are produced.....Thanx for you time and considerations.....Leo

Leo, there are many brands of antique American-made pottery. They made a wide range of material, some for middle-class households in a production manner--molds--including simple gardenware (urns and bird baths, for example), and some for elite clientele that was hand decorated and hand modeled. All of these factories employed trained artists and technicians in addition to line workers. By the way, it was often an artist who created the mold and workers who finished the process.

It was earthenware mostly, some porcelain (the expensive pieces), and the clay was from Ohio or North Carolina or a commercial source. The Ohio potteries (Rookwood, Roseville, McCoy, etc.) obviously used local clays; other potteries ordered their clay.

Most companies created their own glazes out of commercially available raw material that they then tinkered with. Glazes are a major aspect of what makes a range of pottery distinctive.

Porcelain takes a different manufacturing process, one that doesn't lend itself to mass production, so it is available at the higher end.

There's a world to learn about all of this!

Yes it did. I think that was one of several fires in the company's history. I feel very lucky to have a "Phoebe" wall pocket from their circa-1990 reissue of that design. Wasn't long after that they closed their doors forever. The wall pocket's hanging in Phoebe's room... though she put star-shaped foil stickers over the eyes which makes it look rather weird!

Yep... we topped a hill and I saw those smokestacks... I think I swooned a little. "OMIGOSH THAT'S IT!"

I went back and read our discussions from, March I think it was, and got another look at your vase. How lucky that you have that. Might be worth more than one of the old Lorelei pieces!

In classic fashion for me, I gave it to a guy I know. He is happy, and it cost him about $200 to get it restored, but he also gifted me with a nice, brand-new modern piece. Honestly, it's fine. I think it's cool that VB was interested enough in it to consider a reissue.

There sure is. I'm aware of several books about early American Art Pottery. There's an excuse to hang out at the bookstore, Leo, if you ever needed one.

Dawna had mentioned Frankoma Pottery, which was made for decades in the NE Oklahoma town of Sapulpa. It's quite distinctive and collectible. I saw a few pieces of it in some Colorado antique shops, in fact. But as J says, much of it was made in Ohio. Van Briggle operated out of Colorado Springs after Artus Van Briggle left his job at Rookwood in favor of a climate that might be better for his health.

My favorite is Roseville, from Ohio. I'd love to collect other kinds but must draw the line somewhere due to lack of space - and funds!

So did VB only learn about it from this particular piece? Did you or your friend contact them about it?

Yes. My friend, to whom I gave it, contacted them to see about getting it restored (it was badly damaged, a shelf beauty only). They had no record of the piece and talked to him about an arrangement to have it reproduced. He asked for "something" out of agreeing to have them use it (I don't know if this means they took a mold of it, but I bet so), and I think he got both a reduced repair charge for this piece and a couple or three pieces of the new ware vasees. I think that's what my new vase represents, part of his deal with VB.

I'm sure a savvy person with $$ in mind could have asked for more, but he simply loves VB and that's why I gave it to him. It was an outlier in my collection. As eclectic as I am I have nearly nothing in the way of the classic US art pottery--but a ton of folk pottery from NC, both old and new, and a good quality but smallish collection of Native Am pottery.

Have to say, living in Ohio has let me see more art pottery than two eyes can manage!

J, thank you, as I do have a lot of experience with Stoneware pottery(and some Earthenware but we mainly worked with Stoneware clays) and glazes of all types. When I was in High School I had a great teacher to learn from and we are still very close friends even today. He lived in a farmhouse(after his separation and divorce) out in a small town(Monee, Il.) 6 miles south of where I live now(Park forest, Il.) and grew up in back in the very late 1960's and early 1970's. He lived with another potter and there were parties every night...and it was a great place to hang out at and do my own work with clay and such. I met Leo Kottke out there one night at a party and the music was always flowing. I have worked with glazes(and slips)from Cobalt(one of my favorites) to Salt Glazes, Crystalline Glazes, Pit Fired pieces to working with copper carbonate on Raku fired pieces. Porcelain is a little harder to work with but is fired the same as Stoneware. The clay does cost more but works the best with Crystalline Glazes.....

My teacher and friend also learned glass blowing from the Art Institute of Chicago and I have some of his pieces as well. He also was Charles Lotton's(it's kind of funny but if you read his bio it says he is self taught with no mention of Phil Mundt, but he did learn initially about glass from Phil and then took it to a whole different level)first teacher in glass blowing but of course Charles then took off from there and learned to master working with molten glass and his work is coveted all over the World. And just imagine, I was offered an apprenticeship from charles to learn how to blow glass and i turned it down to pursue Horticulture.....

Again J, thanx and I will have to do some reading up on all these different companies and their different processes and production of pieces.....and Lisa, I can just imagine how thrilled you were when you found the old factory that "Van Briggle" used to make their work. i'm sure it just made your day!!!

Mikki, I just checked my calendar. Unfortunately, we are either out of town or have prior committments on each of the dates you mentioned.

We are babysitting for our youngest granddaughter on July 13 while her parents take her older sister to Hershy Park for the weekend. We are out of town on July 19 and 20. We have Woolly Mammoth tickets on Wednesday, July 24. My daughter-in-law got Nats tickets for me, my son and her father (as a belated Fathers Day gift) for Friday, July 26.

Keep me posted on future productions. We'll try to get to one of them.

I have quite a bit of the Frankoma 'Wagon Wheel' pattern. We eat off wagon wheels dinner plates quite a bit. I mix and match it with my Wallace Rodeo stuff, even. I have the wagon wheel pitchers which are probably my favorite...well maybe the cowboy boot cups or wall sconces might be my favorite..
