Mikki, I know acting is a lot of work and you spend a lot of time rehearsing and preparing but maybe consider taking a smaller part then to give it up. I too am on the other side of 50yrs. old and have had to learn to pace myself differently. You could always find a different activity(ies)to spend your time at and still find the same enjoyment, peace and happiness. There are always possibilities and choices to be made and this adds to the fun we call living!!!

(Btw. have you received any of your watches back from their respective spas???)

It's been ark building weather here and will continue that way, it seems. Much more rain than normal, which is good and bad.

But a little respite just now...the view:

Us too, we have been getting a lot of rain this year which is good...as it's been replenishing the water table from last year's drought which started two years ago in October. I'm glad I do not have to spend three hours a day watering in the gardens. But I do need to get out and stake the taller flowers, deadhead the perennials, weeding and fertilizing so this week I will be very busy. Now if my RA holds I can get out and get the work done.....

The Chicago Botanic Gardens is having an Art Fair next weekend so Pam and I are planning on going Friday night for Members Only Preview Night. Should be fun as we will go early to walk around first and then attend the Art Fair in the Evening. They are planning on having 100 Exhibitors in all Mediums so there will be lots to see.....

Then we will stop for dinner before going home and then on Sunday another Nursery about 40 miles away is having an Open House and Art Fair on Sunday and we plan on going as well. This Nursery(The Fields of Caton Farms)specializes in Day Lilies but they do carry Hostas and other Perennials, Ornamental Shrubs, Trees and Evergreens. There will be food and drinks and of course and their plants will be on Sale...a busy weekend as long as it doesn't rain too much.....

J, the rainbow is beautiful set against the field and I can imagine it must be great living in the country. When Pam retires we plan on moving to the country(one of my dreams)maybe down in Southwestern Missouri in the Ozarks. A nice Farm House with a few acres so I can design and start a new garden would be ideal. I will plan a Dwarf and Mutated Evergreen garden with Hostas, Perennials, Shade trees and a small lake or pond stocked with fish, frogs, turtles and toads and stuff.....something for the wild animals and to bring in the birds and such. Would like to have around 5-10 acres with woods set around the lake/pond!!!

Oh, and I forgot Pam wants cows, chickens and pigs.....Oh My!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

Mikki, I understand your sentiments but as we age we need to cut back a little or a lot depends on your health and needs...unfortunately as they say 'Youth is Wasted on the Young'.....oh well!!! C'est La Vie...live and learn...

Good luck and enjoy your play and soon, maybe soon your watches will come home as good as new!!!

Take care.....Leo

That sounds great, Leo...the Ozarks are so nice! We head over that way 3 or 4 times a year.
Better shoot for 10 acres if you are getting cows and pigs.

So today we go up at 4:30 am, drove 3 hours to a ranch rodeo. The 14 year old kiddo is on an 18 and under ranch rodeo team and this was the first rodeo of the season for them.
They had a 1st place bronc ride, and placed in 2 other events. Team penning and another event that is so hard to describe I won't even try. They had 'no-times' in 2 events which they were NOT happy about, but it was a pretty good day for their first rodeo as a team and the first one of the season. I would post pictures but I'm pooped. :)

Ha! That reminds me. We've been scouting colleges as of late. Naturally we meet with the soccer coaches. At a recent visit, he and I shared a laugh when I commented that no one knows more about a sport than a Dad.

When I was a young kid we used to go to rodeos and livestock auctions. Once my father even bid on a horse. I'm sure my mother was glad he didn't win as though we had some land it was mostly woods and had no barn for a horse. I imagine he got caught up in the excitement.

No worries in 95% of the time the parents and kids are just fine. Even the crazies are well meaning just over the top. Unfortunately every once in a while someone goes way too far and then all the folks who don't know any better take it and run as if they know what they're talking about. It really isn't that bad most of the time.

Cool! Hope you can post some pics after a good night's sleep, Dawna. I'm not sure I know what team penning is... does ranch rodeo have different events than traditional rodeo?

Dawna, thanks for the advice(on the animals)if the animals(which since I know nothing about and will have to learn)need that much space I guess I better shoot for 20-25 acres. Or Pam will have to settle for figurines above the fireplace mantel...of course you have to have a fireplace or it will be a deal breaker!!!

I'm glad you had a good day and had fun but a good nite's sleep will do you wonders...just think how good the coffee will taste in the morning.....

Ranch rodeo is different in that each event is something that would take place on an actual working ranch. (some of them are events that USED to take place on working ranches a long time ago, ie 'wild cow milking' ) Some of the events are the same or similar to events you would see at other rodeos.

Team penning is where a team of 4 cowboys have to work together to cut out 3 numbered head of cattle from the herd and keep them separated for a specified amount of time. The cattle have numbers on their sides and once time starts the announcer will call out the numbers of the 3 cattle they need to 'sort' out. Then they go to work getting them separated without letting the other cattle get away from the herd in the process. Clear as mud, I know, but pretty simple concept when you can see it in action.

Dawna, sounds very interesting to see a Ranch Rodeo in person and to have your child involved I'm sure makes you very proud. How many competitions will take place this Summer? And do they continue into the Fall and will there be ones closer to where you live or lots more traveling???

Leo,
I think there are a total of 10 rodeos in this association series wrapping up with the finals in October. There are some others they may enter also in different associations. Some of them are closer to home but most are at least a 2 hour drive. But that's ok, I don't mind a little road trip. :-)

We just don't get cool stuff like rodeo here. The nearest I got was in a bar in Magaluf, they had a rodeo machine. Don't think I was on it for more than a few seconds.

I imagine it helps to break up the Summer and Fall and I'm sure you are a very proud Mom...and rightfully so. It's nice, I'm sure, to get out for a day and see what's happening elsewhere!!!

In August the County just South of us have their County Fair and we really enjoy going so Pam can see all the "show animals". And it's fun to listen to the country teenagers and their comments and jokes about us "Urban Folks". I usually engage them in conversation and they are surprised that I actually know a little bit about the animals and are surprised that I know and understand Agronomy(plants are plants and I like them all)!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

Oh my, how beautiful the koi and water lilies are! You have so many delights to look at regularly, Art. That's something to treasure.

Dawna, the rodeo sounds like a fantastic learning and doing experience for the young man. I find ranching and cowboying traditions interesting, and now less exotic to me because of learning more about farming in general. I didn't use to make the connection between ranch life and the ranch economy and those who deal with land and livestock in the East and West.

Today I'm back in housefrau mode for a week of entertaining and therefore cooking like crazy. Tonight's menu: lamb burger sliders with garlic scape pesto, classic pesto Genovese (basil from the garden), and yogurt dill sauce. Red potato salad (vinaigrette, not mayo based), greens salad, and fresh cherries and ice cream for dessert. All the produce and lamb are mine, or local.

Waves to all.

J, you may be too busy but we'd love to see piccies of your culinary creations.

My sister's coming to visit for a few days this week - I think the extent of my effort in the kitchen will be warming up the "to go" boxes from nearby restaurants! Nah... probably there will be some grilling going on. Must get to Whole Foods today or tomorrow.
