These guys came to see me today.

At 96F they were smart enough to stand in the shade.

I use to and can understand it somewhat in movies....My mothers parents were from Germany/Swiss and settled in Texas in early 1900's......
My mother spoke to us in German and English when i was a kid
But since my wife is from Mexico and we speak Spanish at home for many years
and everybody in Texas/Arizona speaks Spanish/Spanglish
German is been long forgotten and have assimilated to to being an honorary Mexican....so says my wife anyway

Seriously... it's kind of silly that my kids' school requires French every year from first grade through fifth. Finally, in sixth grade (through eighth) they have Spanish. Living in our part of the country, French isn't really of much use, but we could use Spanish every day.

If you lived on the Canadian border you run into lots that Speak French and English.
I spent allot of time in Toronto when I worked for IBM and they had a huge French/English
call center there.
We had a Spanish call center in Phoenix.....which I got lots of calls

I dont think Ive ever heard anybody speaking French in AZ or TX but Spanish is everywhere.

That would most probably be because they need to provide service in that language to Quebec and New-Brunswick. Same thing goes with a big watch parts provider in Toronto, you can ask for service in French and the man who picks up the phone has a good Quebecer's accent and has no hard time at all talking to you in French.

When I went to Montreal once the IBM'er greeted me in French ...I had no idea what he said....I replied in Spanish "Learn to speak Spanish like everybody else chingon"
He looked puzzled and then spoke in English. " I guess you dont speak much French in Arizona eh?" well duh
He came back with me to Phoenix for a week and wanted to eat real Mexican Food so I took him here to eat.. ...he jaw dropped and said "my God this is like being in Mexico" I told him it was/is Mexico.
Speaking French around here and you could get ass kicked ....

I work in a mostly anglophone part of Montreal and mostly have to speak English when I work before leaving for a mostly French speaking town off the island, it's quite funny how it changes from Montreal to any other city.

As for eating real Mexican food, I'll definitely have to try one of those meals someday...myself is a big fan of spicy food!

I LOVED MONTREAL! What beautiful city! Love to spend a month there.....very diff than Toronto.
OK spend a month there in the summer....I dont like cold weather to much.
I like to wear shorts and sandals year round.
The same guy that came back with me for a week loved Scottsdale and AZ so much he transferred down here.
Like I told him all the women in Scottsdale are beautiful.....no snow...no cold weather .....no humidity

Hey Carl, here's what Google translate makes of your French... I cut and pasted your post into it. I'm laughing really hard about the pasture mountain bird, but I'm also quite confused!

"Mais le français is une A nice disease, the nation Dame! From that passion, if not a late-il nous nous tous puissions express en la fabuleuse languor of the size?

Sure, Wes gentilhomme le le magnifique mais qu'il soit Britons will not partagera probablement pasture mountain bird turned away from bars and jamais je more heureux entendant qu'en une douce escorted me Francaise bercer jusqu'à ce je Tomb and giving les ness of Morpheus."

Did a bit of French myself, and can translate Carl's words.

Ladies and Gentlemen. Wes the magnificent from Britain is such a great guy, I look up to him, and hope one day I can meet him and buy him a beer or some morphine.
