I loved my Moka pot & it served me well for years! (It’s still in the cupboard with my milk frother for emergencies) It’s the convenience of a fully automated bean to cup machine that I don’t think I could live without now. Less ‘faff’ Sent from my iPhone |

Moka Pot looks like it makes a Mean Cup Of Joe!
Came home the other day from golf and found this! I guess we needed a new bean grinder. the old one and new one... Truth be told it works pretty great! But-- It's rather big.

TC - you don't need to spend that kind of money to get good Espresso.
Entry-level machines like Breville's "The Infuser" for US$500. will make good Espresso when fed with quality bean. You will also need a good grinder which is an extra - and not cheap. (Breville - The Smart Grinder Pro" - US$200.) I prefer a separate grinder rather than an integrated one as found on some "Automatic" machines.

the best machine you can buy for home coffee in my opinion, is a rancilio silvia with a rocky grinder.
its all based on a commercial machine. I think you will struggle to top it. |

Timedate, I use a 'Diadema Perfetta' with a 'Rocky Rancilio' grinder.
Both are "entry level" Italian machines and whilst years of experience produces consistently good Espresso, when I eventually upgrade it will be to a better manual machine, not an "Automatic". On my wish-list is 'electronic temperature control' and a 'pre-infusion' feature. The rest I can manage myself. I will probably go for a higher quality 'stepless' grinder to get a bit more grind flexibility. Espresso machines/grinders can run into big $$ and the trick is to buy something that suits your needs but still is capable of producing good coffee at a sensible price. It's why I recommend the Breville type of set up as a budget starting point - it teaches you to understand and optomise your machines, which is a good place to begin.

Favorite coffee is Zabar's Italian French. I use pour over to brew.
From their site: "Moving up from Vienna Roast, our French-Italian is a little darker and has a bit more body. Makes a superb, full-bodied pot of coffee, and is our most popular blend for espresso and cappuccino. This is how the Northern Italians and Southern French like their coffee, and they do it so well! So do we, as you already know." Rich and flavorful! New member so not allowed to post links yet but it can be found on Zabar's website. |

The Breville machines are a great jumping in point for high quality espresso drinks. I'd go with the Infuser if I was mostly pulling espresso shots, or the Dual Boiler if I made a lot of milk based drinks. Freshly roasted beans are critical to a good cup, way more important than the espresso machine. I'll take run of the mill beans properly roasted 3-14 days ago over anything exotic but older than 14 days. In general, once my beans have been at room temp for more than a couple weeks, they become drip coffee fodder for my wife. Freezing beans will slow the aging process. Grinders are often overlooked. It's nice that there are ceramic burr grinders on these automatic machines, but taste of straight espresso and to a lesser degree mild drinks and pourover are highly affected by grind consistency and quality. While less expensive grinders can get the job done, more expensive grinders are made to much tighter tolerance levels, grind settings remain more stable with use, and it's much easier to dial in the optimal grind for different types of beans. For example, I generally start with a shot weight of 30 grams in 25 seconds from the time the first drop comes out. This is achievable with new beans after 1 or 2 sink shots. If it's a bean I'm familiar with, it's usually right the first time as the roaster I use is remarkably consistent. I splurged on my grinder (Kafatek Monolith Conical) and you won't pry that puppy from my cold dead hands. |
