5170 will never be collectible as 5070.

I was going to say that I disagree, though I don't know that I do -- for some reason, the market seems to heavily favor the 5070, and I'm not sure if I see that changing.

However, I will say that I personally think the 5170 should be the more collectable of the two. The new calibre is technically superior, prettier, and though it seems that most collectors think differently, the fact Patek went fully in-house for this movement (not to mention the fact that this is the first time they've done this, and that this new calibre is likely to have a long run) is a major positive. The size is perfect for pretty much anyone with any size of wrist. The proportions are also flawless, and though this is subjective, I think the case shape is much nicer. Lastly, I think the dial layout is a lot cleaner, and the dial on the 5170P with the baguette indices is unbeatable.

Just to clarify, I'm not saying I'm "right" here -- market prices would certainly indicate that most think I'm not -- and, as with nearly everything in the world of watches, this is totally subjective.

My personal opinion is that Patek made a lot of 5170s but not a lot of 5170Ps (perhaps less than 1000 pieces). Not as rare as the 5070P but it does have aesthetics, size, and in-house movement on its side.

Assuming they made less than 1000 pieces in the 1 year run, I believe it will at least retain value at around MSRP of $92k with some potential upside in the long run (not counting on it myself). The dial, case, , movement and material (platinum) are simply gorgeous.

I would be honored to own either. I love 5070J in YG with black dial but I already have 5905P with black dial so I feel like it would be too many black dial Patek in my collection. Only reason I bought 5905 is because of 42mm size, so I definitely want to buy 5070 at some point because it also 42mm size. 5170 feels like a small calatrava on my wrist and it basically uses a calatrava case which I don’t like, 5070 is so unique. I’m built like a sumo wrestler so I can’t wear tiny Patek and even 40mm wears small on me.

Not the reason I acquired mine, but, I believe that the diamond indices on the 5170P alone will warrant collectible status for the piece. Not speaking for all 5170s, just the P.
Factory set diamonds from Patek are spectacular (when not overdone).

I am too poor to buy a watch today and worry if it will be worth so.ething in the future!!! Buy it, wear it, enjoy it and if after a few years you havent lost too.much then bonus!!! If you treat this as an asset class then that's a whole another thread!! We bought watches 20 years ago to wear....we didnt bother if you could make a buck on it the next day!!! If you have so much in a watch as % of wealth that it hurts when it depreciates...then maybe you need to rethink that strategy

Back to being poor... oh well.

I use a different gauge... “stripper money”. If it’s more than that then it is considered a lot. Less than that then it’s a little.
