Fluted is nice and all but the smooth bezel really set apart the platinum day-date, prefer the smooth bezel for sure on that

Not to mention it made it look more stealthy/subtle

Can’t agree more. I’m thinking of upgrading my 36 plat DD to a 40 some time. I’ll have to go grey for a smooth bezel one.

Funny how there also is a domed bezel WG reference in 36mm, the 118209, just to further confuse us buyers

That one is confusing though it has the Oyster bracelet if I recall.

That old bezel is amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQRc2yXnOx4

But that new version seems to be superb also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvOJcWMEo50&t=183s

The ADs have all special lighting to make pop diamonds, polished surfaces, etc. So I would love to see how this PT bezel behaves in real life lighting.

Also, do you know if polished platinum looses its ultra brillance when being used. Is it getting a little matt?

I’ve never liked the smooth bezel on platinum. Fluted is signature Rolex DD except for people in internet land that think platinum should have a smooth bezel

Smooth bezel is better suited on an explorer 1 IMO

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA ! is THAT right? LOL you THINK i am WRONG ????
THATS a good one !

Well.... how nice for you. I won't be getting over it anytime SOON since i just
picked up my brand NEW smooth bezel 40mm 228206 platinum from the AD a few weeks ago ! I likely got one of the last ones they had to sell before the new fluted bezels start to come in.

By the way..... NOBODY is WRONG here .... its all about what someone
finds pleasing to the eye. If you like the fluted... well GOOD for YOU !
That doesn't make you right or ME WRONG !

Thanks for the laugh ! LOL That was REAL FUNNY !

I would not buy it with a fluted bezel bc I don’t like the looks of it. I’m just not super in to it enough to buy a full PM piece when I dislike the defining feature of the watch.

The counter point is that the pt smooth bezel was WHY some people liked the watch. It was distinctly different from all other DD’s. I’m not disputing that fluted is Rolex’s signature. What I am saying is that real people (non-internet land people) do think that the Pt watch should have a smooth bezel offering.

I have been TRYING since i re-joined the forum after a number of years being off it. Every time i try to post a picture it won't take. It won't upload.

I dont have a smart phone...just an apple laptop. I dont know that much about computers but maybe the file is too big to post the pics i have been trying to post.

I am STILL working on it. If i can find the time to take my laptop to an apple store i am sure they can show me how to do it. I am so sorry i haven't been able to post any pics. I have so many to show. If you look back on all my threads... i have not once posted any pics because i cant figure out why its not working.

I promise as soon as i get this sorted out I will post some... especially of
my new ones. I know its terrible to talk about your new watches and then not post any pics.

Rolex charges nearly double for platinum watches, but gold is nearly 2x the price of platinum in terms of raw material.

So in terms of a value, yellow Rolex gold day date watches are the best value of worth.

That's been their pricing strategy for a long time even when gold and platinum were the same spot price.

In 1991, a YG DD was $18k retail but the PT DD was $35k.

so it makes perfect sense for them to introduce more versions of platinum watches since the profit margin is so much higher on them

I say If you want a baller watch get it with the fluted bezel. I always wondered why Rolex made the smooth bezel on the DD

For those that prefer the fluted bezel- good news they are now available

For those that preferred the smooth bezel - it’s either grey market or it seems the last ones made are showing up at ADs

I fall in the latter camp as I think the understated bezel suits the ice blue dial and this watch perfectly. I had this on my ADs list as interested and went in today to acquire this piece that he received this week. Very pleased.

Look forward to seeing some of the new fluted ones in the wild as they make it through to ADs

I currently have 6 platinum watches in a collection that is primarily steel. The ability to switch between the different metals depending on mood and occasion is valuable to me

Between the Deconstructed silver Romans vs diamond baguettes, it’s a tough choice. Both are excellent.

Enatai,

How would you rate the Pt Day-Date amount your collection? I’ve heard that this piece trumps many others (incl. non-Rolex), even at higher price points.

I appreciate your interest. Here are three more of the Platinum pieces I own. A 5370 split second chrono, 5970P and 5070P. Besides the new DD, the other two are a 5905P black dial and 321 Plat speedy

To do the entire collection justice I would really need to get everything out and photograph in some form of order. I took a few quick pictures of part of it so you can get a sense of what I like but really should put all the speedy’s together, all the SDs or subs, Patek sports models and Patek complications etc. I will say the ones I wear the most are 5167/5712, SS DJ on oyster, SS Daytona C,Ed white 321 speedy and 5 digit sub or SD

I am waiting on SS 5905 and perhaps it would be a good time to share the journey….I bought my first watch in 1990 Breitling Chronomat and have never gotten rid of one I purchased

Give me a few days on the wrist. It feels really balanced and while you feel the extra heft of platinum it does not feel too heavy

I can compare to the new WG sub and will compare to some of the Patek complications and the 5740 (WG and thinner)but should be interesting….speedy 321 Platinum is at another home but that should be interesting as well
