Simply...The Wine Thread

I was giving up on Beringer 1997 after McAllen GTG but tonight was a shocker and then a 2nd shocker happened.

The Insignia is the gift that keeps on giving and the Beringer '97 gave me hope again visiting a brand new Italian Resturant right down the street..

1st - Caesars Salad

1st -The Beringer Private Reserve makes a stunning comeback a nice treat silky smooth with a finish that I thought was gone forever

Awesome pizza for appetizer

Clams baked with garlic and just a little butter with lemon

The waiter without asking grabbed the bottle of 20 year old Beringer and jammed the cork screw down into the cork and destroyed it. Took me 15 minutes to get the remaining cork out

Insignia came out perfect and wow what color and smell. Understandably he offered to let me open the Joseph Phelps 2001

Angel Hair Pasta, olive oil, broccoli, garlic

The last drops are always the best

1997

2001

Surprised they didn't decant it to remove the sediment, but with the cork mistake I guess I shouldn't be surprised. The Berlinger Private Reserve is pretty amazing stuff. I wasn't expecting much from a company that is mainly known for mass production, but it was delicious. The Knight's Valley Cab that the make has been a great one to watch for a good value Cab each vintage.

I wish CO had a corkage rule so se could take out cellar bottles out to dinner, but for some reason this hasn't even seen a ballot measure here.

Really nice Cabernet, lacking in the finish I normally prefer but the fruit made up for the lack of balance and structure. Can't have a tannin bomb every night I guess LOL

Hi Roger,
This was opening night and invited guests only so I knew it would be busy, I didn't want to bother them as all decanters were in use. To be honest I wasn't expecting to much from this Beringer as my last few bottles were so so and maybe just a bad batch with storage issues and let's face it a 20 year old Napa cab is is coming to an end IMO and had such a great run.

But was wrong one this one, being 100% cabernet and having had many bottles of this vintage and with Beringer pushing out half a million cases a year it's shocking the quality they consistently have here with almost every vintage, almost 25,000 cases alone 1997. Personally in a more formal setting I normally decant but was with my daughter, my ex wife and her husband and daughters boy friend so all was good. 140 year old winery still doing awesome things. And to add, I like and actually ingest sediment of most wine I open with family and friends. Something I like and I connect with the wine knowing how long it's been bottled. I compare Beringer with Rolex both are mass produced but such good quality and value.

Insignia is just so special in its own right. Clearly up with Hundred Acre, Colgin, Pride Mt. Caymus, Bryant, Harlan. It's so good consistently not over priced but a great value unlike a 1500.00 00 bottle of Screaming Eagle. SE is a great wine but is it 1200.00 better then Insignia ?? Don't think so.. it's more "look what I have." But to each their own. If you can bring a bottle of the wines I just listed above and share with family and friends then that's what it's really all about. I know people with SE and won't ever open it lol.. Really ??! It'll be buried with them..

Salute

Haha! If you look at the post, my comment is at the bottom of your quote. Not sure how that happened.....

Mark, the wine was amazing, and the food looks spectacular. This makes a great night out. After all, this is what matters most.

I totally get that. Once we get to the $100+ retail price range, my wife and I start getting much more analytical about our buying. We have a lot of favorites in the $40-$60 per bottle price range and the question come up of "would you rather have 2 of this one or one bottle of this?"

We also love having guests go to the cellar and pick wines because we often find ourselves going to the old standards. We see the cellar as something to share with friends and it's fun to see their excitement when we say yes to whatever they pull. The look is often that childlike wonder that is hard to find as we get older.

Yes, that's what it's all about. I laugh when I say pick a bottle. I have no huge cellar but down to 450 bottles in the cabinet anyways and have off site storage
For extra

Cheers !!

This for a muscle relaxer after my wife lead me on a 2 1/2 hr mtn bike ride that topped out over 10,000 ft above sea level.

Of course it had to be followed with a nice post ride meal. Potatoes with garlic butter for carbs, asparagus for a green, and mushroom/shallot topped steak for the protein.

Today it was kinda of warm. We were in LA county for a birthday party and my car read 112F. Way too hot for me, felt more like Vegas. Thankfully it was much cooler at home.

Nice!!!!

That Duhart-Milon -09 is a great bottle from a great vintage -- it is primarily Cabernet -- so will definitely have a bold - but balanced flavor profile. Parker rated it 97 points -- so it should not disappoint -- also they are owned by Lafite...which is some good pedigree!!

The Saffredi is another GREAT wine -- Hails from Tuscany -- and is a nice Cab, Merlot blend -- might have a little petit Verdot in there also...should be a bold, intense elegant wine - for the region. Parker rated it 96 -- so again -- it shouldn't disappoint.

If it were me -- I would have the Bordeaux by itself -- or maybe with a nice cheese board -- the Italian -- would definitely be with food (as I do with most of my Italian wines wines). They tend to have more acidity -- making them pair much better with a 'bigger' meal.

Two GREAT wines right there my friend!! Enjoy!!!!!

Much more detail than I could post, I know the Saffredi is delicious. I really enjoy good Italian wines and have several of these in the cellar.
