Did not know that about him. Phoebe tells me he had scoliosis and was in constant pain from pinched nerves... hence the path being paved to drug addiction. A tragic life.

Yes, he had a number of physical ailments to go along with his depression. Many don't know that he was playing piano and writing music before he was school age, accomplished artist too. He was from a fairly talented family.

Tonight Apocalypse Now is on, I love that movie. Saw it at the theatre on it's opening night. #30 on the all time best movie list.

I will show my age, I guess, but for me the Music started in 1963 and progressed from the Beatles, Rolling Stones to Traffic, Cream, the Who and Jethro Tull.....among many others. And then in the early 1970's(1973 was the year of my change)the progression brought me to Jazz Music and I found my peace of mind.....

Also since our ears process sound as being analog...I have always preferred vinyl over digital recordings. And have always preferred Stereo sound played through a good Amp and Pre-Amp, turntable and set of speakers.....

Bas, my 10 year old daughter, June, is a Minecraft fan, too. She wants to know if "you can do red stone." I have no idea what this question means, but I bet you do.

You're right, I don't need that book, but it sure is a nice thing to have for a Minecraft fan like me.

I also ordered the Redstone handbook, I guess I do need that one.

Well... ehm, Redstone is rather complicated, I can do basic things like making a circuit for lamps but that's basically it.

I'm glad June enjoys playing Minecraft, it is a great creative game for young and old.

I'll let her know, Bas. Is there any way she can see some of the things you have made? I know nothing about this!

I will make some screenshots tonight, I deleted most of my photos on imageshack.

Bas, can Minecraft users see structures that other users have made when they're playing on Minecraft? In other words, can we go to a village or place that someone else has built, and know who the user was who built it?

There are two gamemodes in Minecraft, Singleplayer and Multiplayer.
Everything in Singleplayer is visible for you (if you're the player) only, unless you make a screenshot or a video of your builds.

Multiplayer works a little different, you can play on private servers with friends, or you can join public servers.
Private servers require a password and also the host's IP address in order to join, so if for instance your daughter wants to play on a friend's server she only needs to connect to that particular IP and enter the password that her friend has given her.

Public servers however are open to everyone, this is something I don't like because there is something called griefing, other players can steal in-game acquired items (like diamonds) and destroy builds.
I never join public servers, I mostly play single player and occasionally join a friend's server.

Lisa, I don't know if June plays Creative or Survival in singleplayer so I'll tell it anyway.

Creative mode involves building, the player has infinite blocks and materials and is capable of building anything.

Survival is a gamemode where you'll have to survive (well obviously), this means getting food, shelter and mine for cool ores and blocks.
But, monsters will roam when it's dark, skeletons with bow&arrow, zombies, giant spiders and the so called creepers will try to harm the player.
Monsters can be turned off in options by turning difficulty to peaceful, just so you know

Ah, this is somewhat familiar, Bas. June has played both ways, but she prefers creative mode. Ah, we know about the spiders, creepers and skeletons! Witches, too, my 6 year old is telling me while peeking over my shoulder. And she prefers playing in survival mode! I learn something new every day.

Heh - I wonder why the chickens don't lay a single cube as an egg? As I recall, the eggs are actually shaped like an egg.

Thanks for the explanation about the servers. I do think June has shared some things with friends, so this makes sense.

Well I wasn't sure if she had already encountered hostile mobs, and it would be sad if she would get scared of something that could have been prevented.

I was unaware of them when I first played Minecraft, I learned it the hard way

As for the non-cubic eggs, there are many items in Minecraft that the player can collect and use that are not cube shaped, but they are in the same 'pixel' style

This is the infamous Minecraft diamond, you can only find them close to bedrock which is quite a dangerous place to be with all that lava and monsters, this is as you can see a non-cubic shaped item as well.

Here are some of my builds.

My mansion with gardens (I only made the exterior)

And the golf course behind the gardens which is far from finished

A little cottage on a small island

The cellar/bedroom has a redstone lamp system with circuits behind the walls all around the room, it has a light switch on the left side just out of view, it's not that complicated and I'm sure June is able to make something like this with redstone as well.
I pre-ordered the Minecraft redstone handbook from amazon yesterday, I will let you know if it has some good tips and tricks on redstone.

This is my desert farm and city walls that I made around the existing village, this is also still in progress (most of my bigger creative builds are still in progress)

And this is my Pripyat build (the abandoned city close to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant).
I thought it would be a challenge to recreate the grey, sad, abandoned buildings.

And a video that captures this build a little better.

Why is Minecraft's graphics so bad? They look all blocky, my old Commodore 64 could do better.

What is it called - 8 bit? It's the essence of all that is Minecraft, Wes. Accept it and revel in it! But, I thought it was weird, too. It's like building with Legos.

Bas, thank you for the images! I appreciate your taking the trouble to post them. Can't wait for June to get home from school so I can show her. You've built some remarkable structures!

Y'all are making me feel real stupid right about now. I have never heard of any of this stuff let alone seen it. What do you do with this stuff? I've never seen a facebook even. Was embarrassed last week when a forum member PM'ed me that she was doing instagram. Thankfully Lisa explained a little to me what that was. I must get with the program.

Meh, I wouldn't know any of that stuff except that my kids teach me. I have little interest otherwise! I just try to figure out enough to decide if it's safe for them, and then it's all theirs.

I think that's what makes the charm of this game, it's quite nice to make such nice buildings and houses with simple blocks. You don't always need very fancy graphics to have fun in a video game.

No such accounts here either, I only go on TRF and play video games at times...

Just got a new cellphone guys! My old one's battery kept dying and with all the road trips I have to do it wasn't very safe to drive with such a bad phone. I took the initiative of going the smartphone way and got a Galaxy Ace II, I didn't want anything too fancy but I did want a good camera on it...

...I never thought I'd actually pay attention to the camera on a phone but I developped an interest in taking pictures. I didn't want something as good as my camera obviously but for quick snaps I thought it would be nice, especially when I want to take pictures of repairs I make or clock movements I'm disassembling.

You can also add me to the "LIST" of not keeping up with any of these "Social Networks", Games and such as I have no interest as well.....it does tho, piss-off a lot of my friends cause they can't understand why I am not interested in any of them(I do not have an E-bay account or a Pay-Pal account either).....

Let's start a "CLUB" for those of us who do not care and are proud to admit it.....but I must confess...I did sign up for Linked-In cause...well that's a 'Soap Opera' of a different color and I do not want to go into details as to why I joined.....I'm just calling it a mistake!!!

And...done! I've transfered all my contacts in my new phone.

Funny how you never realize how many contacts you have in those machines until you have to write them again...nowadays with Sim cards it's supposed to be much easier but I keep my phones for so long that they have the time to change the size of those bloody cards, therefore I have to re-write everything...

Enjoy your new phone, Carl. I agree with Art - those things can take really good pictures. Well, except if you're trying to photograph anything in motion - then it's blurry. I don't have much luck trying to get pics of the hens or of Phoebe's volleyball games.

June says to tell you, Bas, that she enjoyed your Minecraft builds very much. She has done some of the redstone stuff, but tells me it's tricky because the switch can't be too far away. There may be other reasons, too, but that's the only one I remember.

Thanks again.

Thank you Lisa, so far I've taken a few pictures to test it and the results are nice, I have a special project coming up and want to share it on the forum so it comes in handy...
