That's still not enough time to make a pan of mac and cheese before bedtime.

You haven't lived if you haven't had yorkshire pud. Flour eggs and milk, it's hard to get them to rise in the oven, and you have to resort to Aunt Bessie's.

The hens enjoying some Greek-style plain yogurt. Who knew chickens liked yogurt?

This seems to be true, Bas. I've heard they'll even eat mice, if they can catch them. I'm not sure I'd want to eat any of their eggs for a few days afterward, though.

Yogurt's supposed to be especially good for them, too.

Them chickens got big. Was it low-fat yogurt?

Maybe it was 2% but it wasn't fat free. Maybe they need to go on a diet, eh?

It's hard to find full-fat whole milk yogurt around here, but I prefer it. It's so much better tasting with the fat in it. Just like everything else, I guess!

Never thought I'd see the day of a chicken eating yogurt! They look so healthy.

Lisa, I hope those chickens know how lucky they are! Hmmm, wonder how the baby chick is doing these days....any idea? Suppose he/she is all grown up now!

They have a pretty good life, Art. Ample room to roam in the backyard, a safe place to sleep at night, good food and lots of cuddles from the kids (and me!). They are so much more interesting and personable than I had imagined. And I don't have to buy eggs at the store anymore.

Hey - and guess what we're having for dinner tonight?

Mac and cheese.

They repay us with two eggs a day, Karis! The third one still isn't laying yet. I've heard her breed doesn't mature as quickly.

Do you mean the little duck? I hope he's/she's happily living with a flock on a big lake somewhere, safe from hunters. We think of him often.

Looking again, Lisa, those are beautiful birds. I grew up around chickens, turkeys and capons.

I wonder if you can enter them in a contest, seriously.

Well, we are having baked chicken breasts, too. Violet doesn't like mac and cheese. Sheesh. What a weird kid.

I will get a pic, but am not sure how it's going to turn out. It's still in the oven. I haven't made mac and cheese from scratch in a long time. It's made with smoked gouda and sharp cheddar.

Aw, how kind of you to say so, Art. They're nothing rare or special; just mutts bred for good egg-laying. They're called a Black Star, Golden Comet and Easter Egger. The most interesting-looking one is the Easter Egger; she looks sort of like a hawk. I have a pic on the iphone I'll get posted for you.

I can smell it cooking all the way over here. Yum.

Do the kids feel guilty about eating chicken? I don't know if I could.

Well, the mac and cheese wasn't too bad, but it wasn't as saucy as I'd like. Next time, more milk.

And for fun, June and Bernadette.

They seem to be quite healthy, lucky for us.

Did your family raise poultry, Art? My mom grew up with chicken farmer parents - she used to tell us awful stories about butchering time!

Your daughter looks very cute in this picture, looks like she's trying to hide behind Bernadette...

That mac&cheese looks delicious!

No, I just grew up in farm country. Some of our friends lived on farms.
