Great question. I always wondered whether a watchmaker could permanently set the 24-hour hand on a 1655 to a different time zone. I assume yes, but maybe there's a technical reason it can't be done.

I'm pretty sure when the hands are put back on the stem, a watchmaker lines them up them together at midnight. The gearing/ratio takes care of the rest, so I'd imagine it'd be fairly straightforward to deliberately offset a hand, and the inherent relative ratios would maintain that offset.

Yeah, I was just wondering if it was something like that. Never seen it before with a 1655 or 1675, but I see no reason why it couldn’t be done if someone wanted to permanently keep track of two time zones. But I’m far from a movement expert.

Submariner 5513 L serial

Hi

I’m trying to start collecting vintage Rolex, and would like to learn:

1) what does the term “sleeve polish” mean? I have noticed websites use the this term when describing vintage timepieces.

2) why does SUB 5513 L serials have 5512 case backs?

Complete newbie here. My mother just inherited a 5512 (I believe the production date is 1966. The serial either begins with 155 or 135, it's difficult for me to make out.)

I've done a ton of research to get an idea of its value but the more I learn about the endless variations, the more difficult it is to get a sense of what it's worth.

I would be forever grateful to hear any input that any of you experts out there might have! I am trying hard to sort out the details and specs to include if I decide to sell on my own.

We need pics. As many pics as possible. Do not post the serial number.
