Oh the weather outside is frightful. Why can't we have a nice white Christmas, instead we have miserable rain and a howling wind.

Thank you so much Leo, enjoy your holiday as well!

Wes, around here it's not raining. It's been snowing for the past few days and now the freezing cold is back.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum, but I've been peaking in for months. I'm getting married in May and have been trying to decide on a watch for my fiancé. I thought it'd be easy, but it's definitely not! He currently wears a knock-off Tag and I know he'd like a nice one, but would never ask for it. I was thinking about a used Rolex GMT, Submariner or a Tag Heuer Carrera. I don't know a lot about watches, especially where to find secondhand ones. Any opinions, pictures or advice would be soooooo appreciated.

Happy Holidays

Anisah

Hi Anisah, welcome to the forum.

The GMT and Sub are a fine choice, and personally a better choice than a modern Carrera. Modern GMT's and Sub's have a ceramic bezel, and the new black/blue GMT is particularly nice. But the older ones(5 years +) Aluminium bezel are still a good choice.

There are some great sellers here that have a rock solid reputation like DavidSW. Have a look in the Sales forum and the Buyers/Sellers "Who's Who". Drop them a PM and see what they have. You may see prices slightly cheaper on ebay, but I would avoid that. Good luck.

Wes is spot-on with his post Anisah. While I quite like the Carrera myself the Submariner and GMT may be a tad more versatile given the absence of additional pushers and features on the dial. Speaking for myself I would recommend the GMT over the Submariner as I personally prefer it but you cannot really go wrong with either (even with the Carrera if your fiancé is really into chronographs, it sure is a nice model).

Sellers around here are the way to go if you want a nice watch at a good price. Ebay has a lot of wonderful sellers as well but in our small community here the reputation of our sellers is second to none, they are indeed wonderful and for a first expensive purchase it will give you an amazing experience.

Welcome to TRF, I hope you'll enjoy it and do hang around in the Coffeeshop, we have some fabulous ladies around here...and us guys aren't bad either...

Welcome to the forums, Anisah. I agree with Carl and Wes - the GMT is my favorite sport Rolex model.

Merry Christmas, coffeeshop. I've got one kid to sleep and two more to go... we'd better hurry - the Norad Santa Tracker shows he's closing in on us before too much longer.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day! Love you guys!

Merry Christmas to everyone!

I have to keep it short and sweet. Hope I have internet service back soon as we had a treacherous ice storm 3 days ago that knocked out power and cable…:-(

We have power now and all are safe in my family. Toronto is slowly coming back to normal.

Hope Santa was good to everyone. :-) I got a car starter! Yea!! Now my butt won't hit cold leather anymore. hahaha

:-)

So what did the queen have to say?

I know I must be royalty...I keep waiting for someone to send me the papers and a crown.

absolutely barbaric, isn't it? unsightly and the weather can totally mess everything up. I don't see totally underground utilities coming to our neck of the woods anytime soon.

She signed off by saying that she wishes to grant everyone in the coffeeshop honorary royal status, and she'll be sending all a crown and a corgi to look after. God bless you all.

Well I wouldn't say barbaric but it is certainly a bit old fashioned.
I'm glad we have all the cables underneath the streets and pavements, however if there is something wrong they have to open up the street and jam the traffic like there is no tomorrow.

Wes, did you go out shopping on Boxing day?

Ha, no way. Shops are probably chaos, avoid that like the plague. Well hope you had a good xmas Bas. I'm off to the Kent coast today to visit some family and take my new car for a bit of a drive. Have a good one all.
