Good Morning all… :-) Im happily hanging out at my cousins place while she is out skiing in Quebec with her family.:smoking:

Greg…sorry to hear you aren't feeling great. And to have your mothers health to consider as well, is very stressful. I am sending you happy thoughts.

My mom has been ok during the holidays. She too is slowly going downhill. She's stumbling a lot more than before and is starting to forget how to go up and down stairs. Once she gets going she is ok. Until she can't maneuver them any longer, we will just have to help her. One person under each arm and we are good. She was able to spend a couple nights at my brothers place and loved it. I was glad to get the break and was good for my brother to see what level my mom was at. He always asks me if its time for a nursing home and I always say no just a little too soon. Now he knows what I was trying to tell him. My sister in law is a nurse as well and helped with her personal grooming. Im pleased it all went well.

The kids were way too hyper with excitement with all their new toys. Those Hex bugs were a big hit. Especially with the 2 yr old. LOL The 4 yr old was too interested in trying to build a track for them. They have played with them non stop and my brother said a few of the bugs are dead. Oh well…he has to go buy batteries now. LOL The kids just moved on to other toys.

So, I got a few things this Christmas. The best gift as I mentioned was the car starter. Will be sweet to get into a warm car. Then I got some little things, coffee, tea, Starbucks cards, travel much, lottery scratch tickets & money from the folks. Was a nice Christmas. Only 7 of us in the family, not a lot of hoopla. I did however have a nasty headache from the kids screaming all night opening their presents. LOL It was still fun.

I am now off till after New Years. Im not sure yet what Im doing New Years. There's the party downtown Toronto put on every year and of course theres an outdoor concert at Niagara Falls thats usually pretty good. The problem with Niagara Falls is trying to get out at the end of the night…takes a lot of patience. Eh.. there's always a party somewhere. I won't be alone.

What plans do you have for New Years? Anyone going out or doing something fun?

Weather here is pretty good. Although there are maybe 700-1000 people still without power. Im sorry for those still without it. I think 250,000 have gotten restored power now so the hydro crews are working hard at getting it completed. The temp is 2 - 3C today and from what I hear, the ice is melting. Its good yes, but the trees are unloading these huge icicles and cars are being dented as a result. Im not sure if I heard anything about shattered windows or not. I hope the North East part of the US is doing ok too.

Wes…love the pic of that dog with the crown. LOL

Hi Judy, sounds like you had a good festive break. I've gotta rack my brains what presents to get my Nephews when they get back from Oz.

Not sure what I'm doing on New Years Eve. May go for a few drinks, but everywhere is so busy, and a lot of places wanna charge to get in. Normally we get together at a friends house, prob the best option.

Here's what our beaches look like, not exactly Malibu. That's Boo Boo playing fetch with her snazzy pink coat on.

Judy, How old is your mother and when did she "get" Alzheimer's? Mine is 86...will be 87 in April and I noticed her repeating herself back when she was 74-75 .....by the time she hit 80 she was getting real bad.....and 6 years later she does not know who anybody is or who she is now. I wonder what goes on in their brain?....and what do they think about if anything?

Greg, with my own mom, she used to make fun of her own forgetfulness when she was in her early seventies, and she died when she was 83. "There's my Alzheimer's acting up again," she'd laugh. She very gradually started to become more and more forgetful, and have trouble finding her words, but Dad was there to fill in when she needed help... and we kids really didn't have a clue how much cognitive function she had lost until after Dad died. The saddest thing was when she gradually stopped making fun of herself and instead began to insist she was fine, that nothing was wrong. I think, for a while, she was afraid, embarrassed and depressed about what was happening. It was so hard for her to express herself beyond very simple phrases, though.

I'd say the entire journey, from the first signs of cognitive decline to her death, was about 10 years. But she was self sufficient for most of that time. The worst of it was her last two years, after Dad died and when we began to have caregivers come to her house. She became incontinent during that time and could no longer bathe and clothe herself. She mercifully died from heart failure while she still had enough of her mind left to feed herself and walk, and right before my sister and I were thinking it was time to move her to a nursing home, though we knew she would hate it. I wasn't sure, the last few times I saw her, if she really knew who I was, or whether she just figured I was one of the nice people who helped take care of her.

Sometimes I think that nursing home care is too good... it allows these pitiful people to keep on going when they should just be allowed to give up. Since she had an advanced directive not to resuscitate, and not to have feeding tubes or ventilators, maybe that would have protected her. Just am glad we never had to be in that situation.

I really feel for you, Greg. It's so hard.

My moms 74 now and was formally diagnosed 3 yrs ago. But I noticed she was "off" for about 5 yrs before that. I just couldn't put my finger on it. As her memory got worse I took her to her doctor who agreed to an evaluation. My mother failed miserably. That was the start.

She is still too high functioning for a nursing home although she does need to be dressed, and personal care needs to be done for her. She can't prepare her meals but is still able to eat, messily but is still able to manage that herself. She normally goes with the flow but lately Ive noticed she has become a bit more assertive with wanting to go out. When I explain there is ice and snow out there and unsafe to go out, she does calm down a bit. But it takes more and more convincing. She is finding her words to tell my father off. I like that. :-D He is overbearing, and impatient. He does provide the necessities (food, assisting to washroom, dressing her etc) when Im not home or working, but he doesn't do it with any finess or kindness. He is a gruff person. Their marriage was not a calm, loving one. My brother and I wonder if she is telling my father off more because she has regressed to that part of the marriage or remembers more vividly that part of her marriage. My father gets mad when my mother tells him off but seriously, is funny as hell. LOL We kids would never do it, but she can. ;-D She's proud of herself too. haha But so far so good, she knows us and the extended family. When she can't remember their names she says what profession they had and I can usually figure it out. She called me David the other day then laughed and said sorry..I know who you are. LOL I said its ok mom, you've been doing that since David was born, nothing new. ;-) She cries more than she laughs at her Alzheimers so I try to use humour with her all the time. :-)

Its a dreary winter day here. Mild and ice is melting but no sun at all. I feel like downing an entire bottle of Vit. D or sit under one of those lamps. LOL Maybe I should get on some happy pills for the winter. haha

Have a great day all…:-)

Its a nice clear cool day here....about 19c ....could not ask for better weather today with a low of 4 tonight.
My mother has not been able to complete a sentence in 3 years now....and she is getting more and more aggressive with to staff there. I cant imagine having to live like her....and hope I never will.
p.s. happy pills work.....I take enough of them.

Has been hell lately. My father went a bit spun on 25th. He always had mental issues not diagnosed. On 26th I took my mom out for new p's (as I knew she was going to my brothers and would appreciate new pi's being away from home) and then I took her for dinner since no food in the house. She enjoyed the shopping and going out for chicken fingers and fries. :-) Was a hard night for me and my brother. My mom just went with the flow.. She especially had fun with the grandkids at ages 2 and 4. :-)

My mother has always been good to me, nurturing and loving. Its only natural to be there for her now. One day, probably sooner rather than later, she won't know me. On a happier note, I take her out a lot cause she was always out and about, and active. She still hasn't forgotten how to shop. LOL

Since I wore my DJ yesterday, I'll go sporty and wear my Sub today.

Im an idiot..just don't tell anyone.

Have a good day all. Im off to a coffee date. Might turn into a dinner date.

Hope your "date" goes OK and have a great time!
I just thought of a great joke to play on "Kat" Since my brother would never know. I was going to email her back and say "My brother get to drinking and exaggerates on how much money he makes....and he is really broke" Im sure he would never hear from her again.

Looking forward to seeing pictures.
