Phew...where to start,
Cecilia, sorry to hear about your heart attack and am glad to hear you are on the mend...love your bowl and you are quite the "Artist" and very talented as well. It sure sounds like your Dad needs your support even if he has "left the gate open" as they say.....

Mikki, I know it's tough to find a good job so hang in there...it will happen!!! Are you still enjoying all your very cool Vintage watches. And I can just imagine how exciting for you your upcoming play will be.....

Dawna, what a brave soul you are remodeling your kitchen in the "Dead of Winter," is it still usable during the renovations??? And I'm sure the work never slows down on a ranch just because it's Winter.....

Lisa, once again your talent is shining...what a great sketch! As for Phoebe, remember she is still finding herself and her place in the world and coming up with a portfolio of her work can be daunting...also she sounds like she might not be very confident in her abilities and talents and is a bit nervous...remember she sees how talented her Mom and Dad are and that can be very hard to cope with at her age.....

Judy, your work sure brings you challenges and stresses as well...and as for your niece and nephew as they grow up they will see how much you Love them and it will mean a lot to them...for sure. I can hear your pride and joy with each post of how proud you are of their accomplishments and your Love for them. And I'm sure your brother and SIL(do I remember this correctly???)appreciate all you do for them.....

Carl, glad to see you are staying busy and coping with the cold weather and all...also sounds like you enjoy the challenges of your job and work. It must be a lot of fun as each day brings new challenges.....

Wes, I'm trusting by now you feel better especially since you are able to play Poker with "The Boys" and you have that beautiful car to play with and go for trips into the country.....

Greg, I hope/trust your brother realizes how lucky he is to have you looking out for his best interests. And I can only imagine how tough it is for him to be on a Rig working those long hours and only getting two weeks off every now and then. How have you been feeling with your health issues and pain??? And you are lucky as well to have found a Lady to share your life with who Loves you for who you are and not because of money or materialistic possessions.....

Art and I have been MIA and I can only trust he is keeping busy down in the "Sunshine State" where for the most part it has been warm except I know the last week or so have been chilly down there for them...of course right now I would Love to have the low 50's they have been experiencing.....

Take care and stay warm and healthy to everyone.....Leo
Hey Leo,
Good to hear from you as always.....yes, the kitchen has been 'fairly' usable. This little project pretty much turned into a whole house project. Maybe another 3 weeks or so and we should be finished. For awhile, anyway. ha

Dawna, you're going to practically have a whole new house! So worth it when it's all over, if you have good craftsmen.

And I agree - I'm blown away by Cecilia's artistic talent. That little chandelier is AMAZING. Cec, do you make those to sell to collectors? And thanks for the history of your china painting. I was just showing my husband your pictures and he wanted to know how you got involved with it. You truly have astonishing abilities!

Judy, so nice to see a pic of you! You look fabulous, and I love the glasses.

Carl, I'll try to get some pictures of the clock for you. It's too dark in the living room but in the morning I'll do it.

Greg, I am sorry about your bunny. It is almost too hard to keep pets because dealing with their loss is so tough. We've got the hens and my oldest daughter's guinea pig, but I will not mind someday not having any pets at all.

Thanks Greg, I am wearing makeup. That helps a bit. If you look close enough, there are salt strands all over. My part is starting to lighten up a bit and more grey strands there too. Without sounding snotty, Im VERY grateful that I don't look my age. I think that has been instrumental in accepting the inevitable. My brother is 37 and often when the 2 of us are side by side, people ask us..."so who's older?" I LOVE it...my brother, not so much and he gets mad. He's normally a very calm guy but that really breaks him. I love him to death, but I sent him that pic and asked him if that looked like an almost 48 yr old. He told me some words I can't type here. Thanks for the compliments. I will certainly cry the day I have to start dying my hair.

Pets are so great till they themselves get sick and need help in their last stages of their lives. :-(

Dawna...rule #1 of renovating....it ALWAYS becomes a bigger project than you estimated! :bang head: Just be patient and do a little something each day to make you feel you have made progress.

Lisa,
In general the craftsmen have been great! We won't discuss the tile layers. SIGH. ha. The electrician and the painter are from your hood. They are wonderful !

Who are your electricians? We need some good ones. We had excellent work from Baxter a few years ago, but later we had them come out again and of course it was a different guy and the work was sloppy... plus, they scratched up my brand new countertops!

PS - we actually need a good painter, too. For inside and out. Would you mind to PM me with the info?

Here are some pics, Carl. Dave and I may have gotten it running again... we turned the chimes back on and had to mess with the hands and chimes to get them synchronized. We'll see how long it runs. It's fully wound; in fact, I might have wound it too far in the first place - see how high the weights are.

Looking in from the right:

From the left:

Oops... forgotten Easter Bunny treasure:

It's a lovely clock... about 8 feet tall. Made by the Gazo company, San Diego, California. 1978.

Lisa,

First of all, that's a very beautiful clock! I really like its look.

Now here are a few things to reassure you.

- You cannot overwind a clock or a watch, it's a myth (or, rather, a misconception of how a movement works). What usually happens is that over the years the oils inside the movement dry and dust gets mixed in, thus making them gooey and slowing down the gears as they add friction to the gear train. When the movement is too dirty, it cannot move anymore and you will wind it until it's fully wound without seeing anything move, thus giving the illusion that you wound the movement too much when, in fact, something inside must be either cleaned and lubricated or repaired/changed. Another thing that could happen is that on movements that work with mainsprings the spring could break but that would be because it is either very old and has lost its toughness or simply because it was damaged, I don't know anybody who can wind a good mainspring enough to break it (and I hope I'll never meet someone with such a talent...).

Your clock works with weights, therefore you don't have to worry about breaking anything. Unless the chains are caught up somewhere in the movement there's no way you could wind them "too much" and the fact that the clock worked for an hour tells me that those are fine (the weights wouldn't go donw at all if they were stuck). A few ideas come to mind to explain why your clock doesn't work anymore: some parts aren't clean or lubricated properly (who knows, I'm not accusing anybody but perhaps the cleaning products were due to be changed and some dirt got stuck in the movement, it happened to me once and I had to clean the movement a second time), a pivot is bent or broken somewhere (most likely bent I'd say since the movement runs) or a bushing is too tight and creates too much friction on a wheel. Of course, I'm not an expert but from what I'm reading it sounds like it could possibly be one of those reasons.

P.S.: Your weights' position looks fine to me, if they were lower they would be lying on the base of the clock when the chain would be unwound. We set them that high to make sure that they will always stay in the air. If you see them lying down when the clock is unwound, something isn't set properly in the movement.

- Regarding your chimes, all the clocks I've seen had an autocorrect lever in the quarter chiming mechanism. It would be too hard for me to explain it in a post without pictures or videos but basically you don't need to change the position of the minute hand, when you change the time and mix up the synchronisation of it with the good melodies, that lever falls down at some point in a slot and the clock can stop chiming the quarters for almost an hour. After that, a special bit of a cam lifts the lever high enough to allow the chiming to start again. The position of the slot and the time at which the cam lifts the lever are made to make sure that no matter how badly the synchronisation is the clock will be good again within an hour. All in all, when you wind a clock after a few days and set the time, don't worry about the chimes for the first hour, everything will fall back in place by itself.

Have you called your clockmaker? I'm afraid I don't remember if you told me when the movement was serviced last time, was it a long time ago?

But...eggs cannot stop a clock...they're such a good source of protein...just keep putting some in there, at some point your clock will be able to lift heavier weights!

There is no chocolate at all in here except those god awful cherry brandy ones. SO..I didnt have a craving till I read that the egg was edible! I better make a tea. I need something to steer me away from those brandy chocolates that are in fact...gross. But hey, desperate measures. LOL I'm heading to my brothers tomorrow to watch my nephew ski and play with my niece. I think they still have a stash of Halloween chocolate somewhere. I just need to trick my brother into fessing up where he hid it. hahahahahaha

Thanks Carl for that info. I didnt know. :-)

Thanks for the detail, Carl. You really know your stuff!

The clock was overhauled a year and a half ago, when it was moved from my parents' house to mine. It has sat, not running, ever since I mucked it up only a few days after the clock guy set it up.

When it was running at first, the chimes were fine and in synch with the hands And it was keeping time well. Then I started messing with trying to turn off the chimes and that's when it started only running for short periods at a time (about an hour).

Is the middle weight the one that corresponds to the pendulum? I wonder if there is something wrong between the pendulum and its weight.

Oh yes, and I know what you mean about the "autocorrect" function that keeps the hands and chimes in synch. This clock has that, too.

Anyhow, I'm calling the clock guy today to set up an appointment. Thanks for your expertise!

Wahhh... no ring yet. I guess they got busy with the holiday rush. The jeweler called me about it last week and said they're still waiting on it. You may remember I special-ordered a white gold setting. I don't mind having something nice to look forward to!

Hi Everyone.

Looking good Judy

Lisa maybe the egg was used as a weight to keep good time. They use coins stacked on the pendulum at Big Ben to adjust the time keeping.

Hi Leo, yep I'm all better now, nasty cold has disappeared. Hope you are doing ok with the cold weather, we are having quite a mild winter so far, no snow. That was after they predicted we were due to have the coldest winter for 50 years. Really, they spend millions trying to predict the weather, you might as well just stick your head out the window in the morning, if you wanna know what the weather is doing.

Lifting the silent lever causes the chimes to lose their synchronisation, if you lift the lever after the first quarter chime you put the gear train in a "delay" mode (it prepares itself to start, as it usually does a few minutes before the other quarter, but it never starts), therefore it will never be synchronized with the quarters unless you pull it down at the good moment (provided that you remember when you lifted it), that's when the autocorrect comes in handy and that's why putting the silent mode wasn't a mistake of yours. As for messing up the main gear train, it is a different one so unless something wasn't put back in its good spot when it was assembled there's no way the lever should cause the clock to stop. Methinks it's an unfortunate timing and the clock was just due to have a problem.

In most clocks the weight in the middle is for the time gear train, the one on the left would be for the hour chime and the one on the right for the quarters. When you wind the chains, have you noticed if the weights are pretty much at the same height when it's fully wound?

I've only wound the clock once since acquiring it, but I didn't try to get the weights all at the same height - I like the staggered look. So the middle weight is a few centimeters higher than the other two. I don't think the clock has run long enough at any one time to change the height of the weights since I first wound it.

I made the call to the clock shop and they are getting me on their schedule for next week, hopefully. I'll let you know what they find out!

There actually are grandmother clocks, Westleigh. They tend to be a little bit smaller than grandfathers.

So would grandchildren clocks be like this?
