I actually forgot why I bought it but am now addicted to them. Is anyone out there that can help me?
Let me add: I like the way it looks on me, and it feels just as good on the wrist. Excellent quality and superb design.

Finding out there are others similarly afflicted just makes it worse!

modest chicks have 5K plus on them in handbags, diamonds, shoes, etc - then other mini-vault of the stuff at home - why can't we do it guilt free?

but lets face it most people don't know whats on your wrist - we notice other peoples watches becuase we are freaks - its for ourselves...

I am not sure if Patek still runs the ad but it goes something like "you don't own a patek you take care of it for the next generation" maybe its becuase I am a new dad but its a cool notion

I hit the road at 16 years old

and ended up putting myself through the end of high school, college, and law school, mostly nights while I worked full time all the way. Most of the time I was broke. In 1983, after working in my field for seven years, and two years along in my first daughter's life, I made a little extra money. I think it was $2,200 or so. I had broken a series of Seikos, smacking into things and wanted a watch that would last forever, have some class, and show that I was finally making it a little bit financially.

I bought a Rolex GMT Master II with a tritium dial, and wore it for 23 years. When the lume was dead and gone, I wanted something new.

Then I went through buying all kinds of watches from JLC Master Calendar rose gold, to Panerais including a 187 diver, a few different Rolexes, a GP Seahawk USA-71, etc, etc, etc. But nothing really STUCK with me.

For the past four months my primary watch is my 18K GMT Master II Ceramic "Green Arrow". I have a CSAR and a Ball for rough duty, but when I want to wear a watch just to feel good, I wear my Rolex.

It doesn't get me chicks, which is lucky because my wife would kill me. It doesn't get much attention from anyone at all. My CSAR gets more notice for one tenth the cost. But it makes me feel good, and I can see wearing this one at least as long as my first Rolex, which I wish I had kept, as well.

Here's to having my Rolex for the rest of my life, and passing it along to one of the kids to sell after I'm gone

I wear my Rolex so when I go to dinner with friends, they pick- up the tab. They think they'll get some good advice on investments, and be able to afford a rolex one day themselves. SUCKERS.

Life is so dam good!

I wear my Rolex proudly because I worked hard to deserve it. It has more meaning to me than the watch itself. I look at my Rollie and I see hard work, not the shiny black bezel or the 904L steel glistening in the sun.

I think it is undeniable that at least one stigma surrounding the Rolex brand is that it is a symbol of success. Regardless of whether that stems from clever marketing over the years on the part of Rolex Corp., it still exists as a genuine stigma that many people connect with in modern society.

Reading through this very lengthy thread today, a very large number of posters eluded to this exact thing in some way or another. It "symbolizes their success", or it represents to them or others that they have "made it". Not everyone may subscribe to or be comfortable with this notion that Rolex represents "success". But I think that if you are being honest with yourself, you'd have to acknowledge that this is a real thing that surrounds the Rolex brand in modern society....whether you find it shallow thinking or not.

And this leads me to my point.... back to the original posters post.... in some small way, it is very possible that wearing a Rolex watch, with all of the perception and stigma that surrounds the Rolex brand to many people in our society, could lead a woman (a "chick") to think more highly of a man than not. Its a factor...thats all....an "edge", if you will.

When you are a man who is interested in impressing the ladies, whatever your motives or reasons may be, then every "edge" is all a part of the complex package which you put out there in hopes of engaging in "the Game". Just because certain individuals may not be in the Game (anymore?), or give much concern about these things, does not mean that the Game does not exist. And I would venture to guess that if these same persons who look down upon Mikey's comments were truly at a point in their life or experiences where they were sincerely trying to "woo" a member of the opposite sex because they genuinely cared about this person, and wanted truly to make something work, or happen...then those same people would be looking for every "edge" that they felt would work for them too.

Consider brands such as Luis Vuitton or Gucci. What these brands are all about is "representin". Putting your "Rep" out there that you have style, have cash to blow, have achieved success, have a zest for the finer things in life, are of a "higher class". These are remarkably high priced "Brand names". Much like a Mercedes emblem. Great quality, history, and craftsmanship for sure...but you are paying in large part for that brand name, and what it represents in society.

The "Class System" has been in effect in one way or another in just about every eco-society in the history of man kind. At the end of the day...that is what this post is about. Wear a Rolex...represent to being of a higher class...impress this upon another who may find this attribute attractive and actionable. Or, to put it another way...."picking up Chicks".

Whether YOU want to be in this game or not....there are millions upon millions in both sexes who play this game every day in one way or another. You have to at least acknowledge that it exists....and give Mikey a break for being honest and discussing the virtues of it.

if you ever get a chance....read the book "The Game", on this very topic. A very interesting read.

Thanks for considering my point of view.....

Just about sums it up for me too... I love when people say "Rolex? Naaaah, you're just paying for the name!" - not realising what it is precisely what Rolex have achieved that makes their name synonymous with quality and strength.

I always believe in the "one-time purchase" if possible. Buy the best and it lasts forever.

Its a good question, don't know whether I've been sucked in by marketing, I don't think so. Since I saw the Sub and GMT around 1985 the design and the way the lights caught the shiny parts really struck a cord. I've had shed loads of watches over the years, but I keep coming back to Rolex, its the only brand that calms the watch demon in me. Considering in 85 I did not really no about Rolex so marketing came later I suppose.

As far as status symbol, well it might be for some but not in my case, I drive a Rover 620 that cost me £600 my clothes are normally from Tesco or Asdas and I wear a 3k watch, why because I'm a WIS and Rolex is the brand of choice as a WIS.

My previous brands of choice would of been Seiko, Omega, eterna etc and I love the Grovana sub loolalike 9can't remeber what its called.

I wear a Rolex just to remind myself of all of the hardwork that I have put in. My Grandfather used to wear it, then it was passed on to my father (Dad), and then to me. So I also get that connection with both of them when I look down at it.

I believe in "A crown for every achevement." And I have always been fascinated with time. In elementary school, I had a Timex (with a velcrow strap!). For middle school, my Mom took my out to Walmart and she bought me a Casio for 79.95 + Tax. To me that was a very big deal. And then for High School graduation, my Dad gave me "The Rolex" which has been passed down from generation to generation.

My point is, that its not about how much money you spend on it. Its more about appreciating what you have, and treating yourself to something nice every once in a while, because after all, you deserve it.

I only wear my Rolex for special occasions, and I am very happy to continue wearing my Casio for everyday use.

P.S. Yes, I do use my Rolex to tell the time.

Why do I wear a Rolex????????????????????

Well, I guess it stems from when I was in my early teens. I started to notice that Rolex watches were just plain gorgeous. Also, it appeared to me that most of the people sporting these watches were successful in life and that's what I have always wanted to be.

So, as money started to catch up with my talents, I finally had enough coin to drop on a Rolex. For me it was like reaching a milestone. 27 years old and my first Rolex. Guess what? I'm not stopping at just one either!

The Rolex 'sickness' has got a hold of me hard!

I drove plenty of the green ones and I have to say, I have never had Hummer envy. The military version is poorly suited to its job, and the civilian version even more so.

I simply love the feeling of wearing an exceptionally engineered watch. Rolex was the first high quality watch brand I heard about when i was a kid and the quality and air of luxury has mesmerized me since then.
