Better than saying reference numbers during conversation, which is abstruse and really nerdy. But none of this is ever discussed except by brand fans anyway, so I guess it’s all harmless (except to the extent it annoys spouses within earshot).

There is another one that has always had a comic book nick name, the Submariner.

Some nicknames are better than others, but generally I'm okay with their use as it makes it easier for the purpose of conversation instead of memorizing random numbers, having worked in aerospace where the factory uses nicknames for various key components yielding instant recognition amongst everyone.

Nicknames and reference numbers both serve the same purpose of helping people discuss and enjoy Rolex watches. Very few outside of a few niche watch circles care about reference numbers. I know the reference numbers and movements of the watches I own, but I also have enough Emotional Intelligence to 1) realize when and where it's appropriate to use reference numbers in conversation, and 2) not waste my time trying to convince others not to use them.

All said and done, stupid, silly, daft or plain annoying - Rolex nicknames are going nowhere they are here to stay, so get as upset, angry, frustrated all you like, in fact bang your fists all you like they will stay !
Off to get my Cookie Monster that’s been sat next to my peek-a-boo, ta ta ….

The only reason someone can reasonably argue that using “126710BLRO” is superior to “Pepsi” in casual conversation is if they want to make the topic less accessible to newcomers…

I don’t use them, but don’t mind either, to each his own.
I prefer the Rolex codes for them or the reference numbers. Cheers, |
