The qtys produced were noticeably less than what are produced now, and wine collecting was far less of a phenomenon back then. Legit bottles from these old vintages are few and far between, so the opportunities for reviewers and connoisseurs to develop the knowledge of what really, really mature Burgundy and Bordeaux taste like are also few and far between.

Rudy realized that a "verifiable database" was absent amongst the wine community of what older "unicorn" bottles of wine should actually taste like in the glass, and took advantage of that accordingly. In hindsight, it is very amusing to read the sentiments of esteemed reviewers describing wines produced upwards of 90 years ago as being so amazingly fresh, alive and with plenty of life ahead of them. Well, it turns out there may be a market for blending Marcassin Pinot Noir from Napa (the most expensive PN produced in the United States) with old bottles of cheap negociant Burgundy (to provide the Burgundy "funk" that you don't find in US-made PN). The key thing is to put that blend into bottles that have artificially aged labels glued onto them from expensive producers.
Great great point!!

Had dinner with a friend the other night and our wives, this was the second bottle. First was a 2009 Shafer Relentless which was absolutely spectacular!

Just curious to try it for the first time or is there something you've heard about Barolo that interests you?

This is true of most wines, you need to explore the varietal (Nebbiolo) a good bit before you can decide much about what you think. taste, taste some more and taste again. Find retailers and restaurants that sell Italian wines and bug them for information on tastings and dinner and seminars and anything else that will get you to put more northern Italians wines in your mouth. While Barolo's are relatively cheap compared to other world class wines, they don't call it the wine of kings for nothing, it's still expensive. And always better with age which makes a drinkable Barolo hard to find. It's not CA Cab where you can crack one open a few years after it's bottled. Barolo's need age or they are quite austere, but going to tasting will familiarize you with the style and get you ready to try the good ones.

Red wine gives me a headache, it's just one of those things, would anyone recommend me an "Off dry" white to try please?

My favorites Dave are Rieslings, German's are the most ubiquitous, Swiss and and Alsatians also great producers. Unless you plan on aging then I think you are better off with a good producers modest offerings rather than single vineyards or reserves.

Hugel and Zind-Humbrecht come to mind

Thank you very much Marc, I will certainly try them.

As an aside, I watched your Ron Swanson sig, I was unaware of him, but ended up laughing so hard it hurt. Thank you so much, that is funny.

I hope the California wildfires don't spike California wine prices. Many of my favorite wines are from California.

Excellent Choice! May I also suggest Franzia's Vintner Select Cabernet Sauvignon straight from the box!

Tasting Notes
A satisfying dry red wine with cherry and plum aromas. Complements beef and dark chocolates.

Price: Around $16.99 for a 5 liter Box

2012 up 15-30% 2013 going up too

The 2017 harvest happened mostly early before the fire due to exceptional heat (weather) no one knows really knows yet how the smoke will effect the 2017 late harvest vintage as they were picked kinda at the same time or very close depending on the vineyard. Personally, I can't wait to taste some of the late vintage right near the smoke.

Hey Mark, hope you're doing well. Yes this went very well with the filet. My wife even liked it. Good thing I have a few more bottles of it.

Opened this the other night when the Mrs. got back into town with dinner —

Celani Ardore — Celani is a small valley floor vineyard that produces some amazing (unfiltered) wines. Complex, flavorful and well balanced.

Their entire portfolio is great and I️ would definitely recommend if you ever come across!!!

And for my fellow cigar guys...Tom Celani is a cigar man himself — so notice this label he designed for Ardore is styled like a cigar band.

Cheers all!!
