Leo, the hens like raisins, grapes, watermelon, blueberries, and just about any other fruit I give them to try. And it's not just fruit they like - they'll eat pretty much anything that doesn't eat them first!

Art, one of the boys had a pet (orphaned) raccoon for awhile. She would ride on my dash on the way to the vet. On one particular trip, she pooped in my air vent. Anywhoo, he kept her for several months, but the older she got the crankier she got. So we finally talked him into letting her go out in the woods near our place. She was so cantankerous I don't think he even missed her. HA

Cute little guy, Art, but I hear they're pretty ornery - though really smart. We had a family of them nearby last summer and the babies would get into the garage if we left the doors open in the evening. Now, with the hens, I don't want them around. I keep the door to their coop latched and locked at night. The key's hanging right by the coop door but I don't think they're quite THAT smart.
What did you do with him? Take him somewhere and let him go? |

there are lots of them here, too. big ones get in our barns sometimes and eat the horse feed or generally just make a big mess...the boys will catch them in a live trap and then take them way out in the woods far away from the house to let them go.

That's what I was going to do with this one, never thought I'd catch a baby one.

Lisa, big Congrats to you and Dave on your upcoming Anniversary...28 years is a very long time(in this day and age)to stay hitched.....do you two have plans like escaping to a hotel or resort for a long weekend w/o kids?
And as for 9 fantastic years...is this the time(a little over one third of the time) you calculated you two have been in the "sack" or staying in the "Honeymoon" mode???

Oh, Leo.
Actually, the day of our anniversary we'll hopefully be traveling to Wildcare, the wildlife rehab place where we took little ducky. They have an open house a couple of times a year and we'll get to tour the facility and see what little critters are being cared for. Alcohol... aka Mother's Little Helper! |

Yes, Leo, I'll probably be taking the girls to Wildcare. Dave really doesn't like to be outside, especially if it's windy, because of his allergies. For some reason, since he had laser vision correction, his eyes have been especially reactive to allergens.
You're right; it's the third year for the roses. I lost one of them over the winter, though. I think the dreadful cold spell just did it in. I don't really mind. It's planted on the east end of the flowerbed and had a lot of competition from the neighbor's trumpet vine on the other side of the chain link fence. The vine kind of overwhelmed it. The caladium and elephant ears wintered nicely in the basement, and I've already planted them and given away lots of EEs. They really do multiply over the summer. This spring was also my first year to plant daffodil and tulip bulbs and they did very well. I was so happy with the tulip colors I've ordered more of the same varieties to plant this fall. I wasn't sure they would get enough sunlight on the north side of the house to bloom well, but they did. The magnolia apparently just got too cold when the blooms were little. I recently pruned the tree and on the cut branches found hundreds of half-inch buds that had dried up. I wish I didn't have to cut it back so severely each year, but it was planted right next to the house and it really tends to take over quickly. |
