Look for unfinished hardwood trees. Cedar is a softwood and isn’t used by any of the high end makers. Maple and white oak are great, but any hardwood is good.

Raw wood absorbs moisture better than finished wood, and half the job of trees is to pull moisture out of the leather. Avoid plastic, carbon fiber, and other inert materials that aren’t absorbent.

I am not sure of the exact model. But they are AE's. I am guessing you are correct.

And yeah, the brown ones are so molded to my feet right now that they are incredible. That is what drove me back to the store. I panicked at the thought of wearing them every day and beating them up too much in a short period.

Wearing the black ones daily now to get that to that point. The ones on the right are for foul weather, and the non-laced are going to be my "gonna get lucky" boots. Love em.

Woodore is a fairly common brand and you used to be able to pick them up rather cheaply back in the day when Joseph A Banks conducted there 3 for 1 sales. Ordstrom Rack used to carry a slightly cheaper model for about $11 or $12 dollars.

Just stay away from trees with pointed or narrow heels and make sure they aren’t wider or longer than the shoes your placing them in.

Oh yeah Allen Edmonds also sells Woodlore Shoe Trees or they used too.

You can start at Viberg. IIRC they have their own trees. Nordstrom sells generic trees. The shoe snob website sells alderwood trees.

One more thing, don't spend $200 on trees for $600 boots. It's a waste of money. For your boots you will probably be looking at $30-$80 trees.

Rancourt did me a proper. These were long sold out in my size. I asked if they would make me a pair and they did . Great service. The 2 other MTO are in transit.

They look comfy, Congrats!!

One of the things I like the most about Rancourt is the numerous Ready Made but more importantly how easy it was to use their Made To Order Tool. I think Quoddy has since made it a lot easier but Rancourt really lead the pack with their configuration tool. Heck you not only could customize the stich color but you could also pick your laces as well.

Thanks Dan. Think I am good with loafers for a bit. I will start researching some dress shoes now. Not that I really "need" them

Plenty out there to choose from. You should hopefully be able to find a good fit within the style that appeals to you the most.

How did you guys deal with sizing at Viberg? I really like their shoe, but I am having difficulty accepting paying that much for a shoe without being able to try them on ahead of time. And unfortunately they don’t seem to have many stockists.

As with anything it does depend on the Last and they have a few. I only have the one so hat I would do is refer you to Styleforum and the Viberg Apreciation thread as the various Lasts are discussed. Because with some I would probably size down by a half and some I might go with the same size.

I ended up purchasing 2 pairs of Vibergs, they are different shoes but the same last.

My regular sneaker size is 10.5 in nike/adidas etc and I have found that on days where I want to wear thin socks that the full size down in vibergs are perfect and on days where i want to wear thick socks the half size down is the way to go.

this is on the 2030 last from viberg. I was trying really hard to figure out my size and I just bought the bullet and bought 2 pairs. You can return them if they do not fit, but you own the shipping cost back to Canada.

There's a certain bite the bullet type of adventure anytime you purchase shoes without sizing in person however if you take the time to go to Styleforum and look at the Viberg Appreciation Thread where a number of users have shared their experience and how to size for various Viberg Lasts at least you will be harmed with some good advice before jumping off the cliff.

I am serving on a jury this week (I started a thread about it) and I have been learning some legal terms. I believe this is when the attorneys say “I rest my case, your honor”

Your honor those were only provided as examples as to what is possible when going the non-freaking cheap disposable crappy sneaker route.

So you see I have a perfectly good reason to do so and I can’t possibly be anything but completely innocent.

Honestly, I didn’t even know what a last was until a few minutes ago. I’m primarily interested in their Service boot, so likely the 2030 last, possibly 2040.

I searched Styleforum for the mentioned thread and came up empty handed. Will continue to look.

It’s under the Streetwear and Denim portion of the Forum and it’s called Viberg Boots.

https://www.styleforum.net/threads/viberg-boots.224463/

The thing is that I have one pair of Viberg boots and they are a pair of Service Boots on the 2030 Last. I sized down by a half size for that Last which is fairly common however on some of their Lasts it’s fairly common to wear the same size but it all depends on the Last.

This is fairly common for most shoemakers as well as most shoemakers will have more than just a few Lasts which of course is nothing more than the shape of the shoe or boot which can be different enough to affect what size of shoe or boot you may take which of course also depends on your feet. Some Lasts may or may not work so well for you depending on your feet as well. Typically this style of boot or shoe have more generous Lasts which don’t tend to be as problematic as you would find with sleeker Lasts by shoemakers who specialize with a more dressy shoe or boot.
