I won't presume to answer for Roger, but IMHO Scarecrow represents a second wave of cult wines that are somewhat on the down-low. MacDonald, Tusk, Carter I would put Them in this category as well. They are pushing the envelope a bit and making great wines that are testing our financial patience as a result, LOL.

The old guard which has already blown up our regard for financial prudence is: Harlan, Screagle, Colgin, Araujo, Schrader. They all have their own styles and aren't like each other, they are singular expressions of their vineyards and wine makers hands and are unique animals that are very hard to compare. Again JMHO

First off they are all SPECTACULAR wines - truly some of the finest wines produced from the Valley - however some definite differences.

First - Scarecrow is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon - where as Harlan and Screaming Eagle are blends. This right off the bat makes the Scarecrow a bold in your face, yet seamless well structured wine, that can have almost a creamy type of finish. The main difference (to me) between Harlan and Screaming Eagle is that I find the Harlan has a bit of spice to it, and more floral aromas whereas I don’t tend to find that in Screaming Eagle. While their blend is hush / hush, lol — I personally think it comes from the addition of Petit Verdot in the Harlan blend and not in the Screaming Eagle. These are true Bordeaux-esque in its truest form and should lay, I would say until at least their 10th birthdays. They are intense, beefy/chewy types of wines. The Scarecrow - while having wonderful cellaring potential, younger vintages can be (reasonably, lol) consumed. (You’ll definitely want to save some).

Hope this helps!!!

Thanks Marc for your reply. Always great to hear other people's opinions..

I am more interested in Colgin over SE and Harlan...personally. Although at one point or another I would of loved to tried all the offerings you named above...

Thanks Roger. My intentions are to lay them down for a while... and hopefully get my hands on Harlan and SE so I can one day have my own comparison to taste...

A blend from one of our favorites - Frogtown Cellars. Everything they make is estate grown, produced, and bottled. This is 100% Georgian and does not have any grapes from their Paso Robles vineyard. The wines from the Paso vineyard have a red label.

40% Touriga, 31% Cab Franc, 20% Cab Sav, and 9% Tannat.

I was excited to open it — haven’t had one in almost a year.

What a spectacular specimen of Mouton. Definitely needs several hours in the d canter — but this is definitely one of those wines I like to ‘play’ with - and watch it open up.

It has a BIG nose with some coffee, a little tobacco and pencil shavings. It is definitely a full bodied rich wine that is truly seamless throughout the entire palate — it has a kind of youthful Bordeaux style finish. For a nearly 22 year old Bordeaux it has A LOT of life left in it.

Definitely open one my friend!!!! It won’t disappoint.

Cheers buddy!

Tonight we did a salmon with a white wine, portobello mushroom, pine nut, and green onion sauce, over zucchini noodles and served with an excellent Oregon Pinot from our last wine club shipment.

Went on a local wines trip here in San Diego, picked up a bunch of new to us stuff, most of it is very small batches, +/- 50 cases made total. Also a mammoth pine cone we found along the way.
