White gold looks great! Have you tried any different straps on it? I’m looking forward to trying a few different colors on mine.

I’ve actually got it on a navy lange OEM strap right now, but it’s a really dark navy so wears quite similarly to the black (you can only really tell the difference in good light or if they’re next to eachother). otherwise no but I want to! I’ve been thinking about seeing if the lange boutique does custom ones? maybe a lighter grey one would be cool? lmk if you have any ideas!

here it is on navy:

One more question for you…If you had to choose between the Dato Up/Down and the Zeitwerk Date…which one would you choose?

I have one on order at the boutique, they said middle of 2023…I was placed on their list in the middle of 2021. Tried one on and it was fantastic.

It is a tough decision to make since both watches are fantastic. If I had to choose one, I guess it would be the Zeitwerk Date as it is more unique and special to me.

Hi - i am looking to purchase my first lange in secondary market. Every looks right with the watch except the hour indices seem to tarnish or blacken. Is this normal or something that will happen or should this be a big red flag?

I am not sure about that but I would just offer my advice from my previously buying a pre-owned Datograph. Lange watches should only be serviced and opened by Lange. Ideally you will want to buy a pre-owned watch still under warranty and never been opened up since it left the factory. Otherwise, you want a timepiece that has only been serviced by Lange, or never serviced at all. If the watch has an issue, it should be sent to Lange. If the watch was previously serviced outside of factory service, the bill to correct all of that is going to increase. Furthermore, I'd loupe the movement, as even factory service can leave some blemish or marks. It is what it is, enjoy the hunt.

All this but just be warned, IMO stuff that has been laying around the second market (especially Lange -- older Lange) usually has been touched/"intervened" by a third party (Lange's descriptors, not mine). The Germans are sticklers for everything including the servicing. If they find any evidence (And I do mean ANTYHING at all) that the watch has been serviced or even polished by a third party, it automatically goes back to Germany for a complete overhaul. Dato servicing can reach up to $5K, I've seen other members get stuck with bills that high. I learned my lesson and so my pre-owned Lange days are over, everything I buy now is new with warranty.

These are exceptionally crafted products so if you are already having to eye-brow raise at the sight of some online posted picture, I would tread cautiously.

Wow sounds like buying preowned lange is not as straightforward. Thanks for all the suggestions. Any other things you would look out for?

Also regarding the tarnished/blackened indices, any idea what could have caused it? Is it natural for this to happen?

First Lange. I'm surprised it took me so long. Loving this one so far and already have some more straps on the way :)

It'd help if you could post a pic of the tarnished/blackened indices. I'm having trouble visualizing this.

There are quite a few things to look for, but it takes some experience. I always check the lug chamfers to see if they're overpolished . I check the caseback screws to look for even the tiniest blemish on the screw slots, to see if a non-Lange watchmaker was ever inside the case. On every preowned platinum Lange, I check the buckle to make sure it's not white gold. If it doesn't have its original warranty card, I check to see if it's stolen.

Also good advice on the matching metals of the buckle. Ive seen plenty WG buckles married to platinum cases which is a big no no.

Checking the values and considering that secondary pricing is nearly on same level as MSRP, it behooves oneself to consider paying a bit more for a new/current model year stock backed with some kind of warranty.

Now that vacheron has moved to 8 years warranty, one would hope ALS follows! Then it's a no-brainer to buy new from boutique!

I got my 403 Pt Dato preowned… got it serviced and even though case was in really good shape; got the case refurbished since they use laser welding technique; but it’s not even clear if they needed too.

It was a good experience with Alkis over in NY. He does the Datograph services.

Did I miss something on Datograph prices? A prominent US dealer just listed a 1st Gen Dato in rg black dial (Dufourograph) for almost $180K.. what the hell happened?

I think it's an open question as to whether that dealer is spoofing prices. I don't know one way or the other, but I've compared that dealer's prices to other grey market prices and they are way out of line; and despite prices being so high, pieces are often immediately marked as "on hold", giving the sense that the price is legit. Draw your own conclusions, of course...
