$12,000 Rolex stolen in NYC - Broad Daylight

Those scooters are being weaponized by criminals. They just roll up on you and five seconds later it's over.

In some countries, male passengers are illegal. Maybe we need that here.

$5000 a month for a 1 bed in chelsea and you walk outside and that happens. at this point i don't even know what to say

vespas/scooters/bicyclists do whatever they want here and are above every law. nothing will be done about it though because apparently nothing is worse than cars

Because they might steal a watch?

Strengthens why many are moving to other States. Same with SoCal residents now migrating elsewhere.

Yep. One drives and the male passenger does the robbery while sitting on the back the entire time.

Here we go again. Law and order are gone when there are no consequences and civilized society continues to erode. NYC used to be fun and safe to visit -- no more!

It's getting to the point where it's just better to wear a beater or at least a non-Rolex. My Christopher Ward did just fine my last trip to a football game.

i stopped wearing my day date except on weekends where i'm staying at home or just in a car since it's so hot that you're just exposed all the time. looking forward to it finally cooling down a bit so i can start wearing it under sleeves

i did wear my AP to a yankees game in the bronx which isn't a great area but felt totally safe the whole time. it's like how everyone here says that for every incident there are tons of people going about their day without worries, but i feel like i'm on high alert a lot more often now

ironically it seems like good neighborhoods are now dangerous because they give a false sense of security i guess

I hear ya. I've just gotten a lot more particular about where I wear and dont' wear my Rolex. Doesn't mean I don't wear a nice watch, but I have to think my Grand Seiko or Tudor is a lot less likely to get me targeted than a Rolex. And like I said, sometime I just go with the Ward or my Orient. I love all my watches and no sense in taking on more risk if you don't have to. My Rolex does just fine locally or at the beach. But certain places I'm just not risking it anymore. Shame because 4 years ago I never needed to give it a second thought.

I'm reminded of a comment I once heard, probably by many, which was "why do I need an alarm I live in a nice high end neighborhood?"

The reply was well where do you think the thieves target?

This is just so sad. Does this mean every incoming bike with 2 persons on serve a threat?

This happened to my son and I in Ho Chi Minh City about 10 years ago, but we were able to wrestle the little attackers off their Vespa and chase them off. Sad that this is becoming more prevalent in our big (expensive place to live) cities.

These threads all end up the same. Political diatribes about the collapse of life as we know it, breaking the rules here, then thread locked.
Meanwhile life goes on for the rest of us. Bad things can and do happen worldwide, I am cautious where appropriate but continue to travel and enjoy my retirement.

Imagine how many watches were not stolen from wrists in New York on the same day.

Difference between now and then, then you met fire with fire. Now all NY's hands are being tied.

Try some of that scooter theft here in Texas.

In Europe this has been quite common with 2 riders on a motorbike, but not necessarily for watches, but necklaces and women's purses. Guy on the back of the bike does the snatch and grap.

If they're wearing hoodies and a face mask, yes.

Probably not a question that can be answered here, buy I've only seen one gun used in these snatch and grab motorbike incidents. Not to say they're not present on the person of these criminals, but perhaps some pepper spray might be a non lethal alternative. Probably wishful thinking on my part.

pretty sure in NYC if you carry pepper spray or pretty much any weapon, you are more likely to be arrested than any of those thugs (some of whom are carrying weapons illegally anyway)..
