Placed a deposit for a watch...

..made and finished to a very high standard by a humble and passionate watchmaker, who sold his house to raise enought funds to open his own workshop. I'm sure you must have heard of his name by now if you follow independents - Sylvain Pinaud.

And the watch is the Origine.

IMG_20230418_230324_(900_x_1100_pixel).jpg

The Origine is 40mm x 11mm and has a big balance wheel with escapement on the dial side. The majority of the movement components are built at his workshop in Sainte-Croix using mostly traditional machinery. Only certain components such as the hairspring, jewels, and crystals are sourced from suppliers. The case and dial are from Kari Voutilainen’s Cattin and Comblémine respectively. I love the sweet dials made by Comblémine with those hand-finished "bulges" that you can also find in Petermann Bédat's watches. There are also sharp inward angles on the bevels with "Hand Made" inscribed on the dial. That's my cup of tea really.

The whole ordering process is a breeze. It is so refreshing to connect directly with a watchmaker and Sylvain is so friendly and helpful with his suggestions and renderings. Customization is doable and I have changed the case of my order from steel to platinum to give it more heft.

Delivery is early 2026 because he only makes 10 to 12 watches per year. I can't wait to collect the watch! Thanks for reading.

Big congratulations, looks beautiful in these pictures. Reminds me , just a tad, of the new Grönefeld gronograaf. This will be a great addition, I'm sure, when it arrives .

Congrats in advance. When that young watchmakers dinner video surfaced I thought SP had the most interesting watch of them all. Probably because he wasn’t so young haha

I agree with you re Sylvain. He has recently expanded his team to 4 from 2 and I'm so happy to see his brand grows, and very happy to support someone like him.

Will update whenever there is any progress!

The name doesn't roll off the tongue easily, which is hard to fault... that is the watch maker's name I'm guessing. The watch looks great, but I think the "handmade" text is a bit weird. Since the watch is "hand made" could you make a request to not have that on the dial? (or is it already preset by the machine?) =D

I love that inscription on the dial. It represents his work and I like a watchmaker who is proud of his own hand-finished watch.

co gears! It’s refreshing to hear a collector can still have an honest and pleasant interaction purchasing a watch these days. Perhaps that’s the treatment you get from independents.

Looking forward to seeing a NWA thread in 2026

the watch looks so beautiful. I also contemplate on this watch, but no action yet. However I did started collecting a few small indie brands. it seems indie brand is the road after the PP journey for us

Thank you!
I still hope to collect certain PP like the enamel World Time, rare handcrafts and a minute repeater. Those independents we lust for typically are very hard to obtain as well (more difficult than Patek sports) but the end products are spectacular. Who knows what else I can add before I retire but the future is bright with all these young artisanal watchmakers emerging.

Congratulations looks like an exciting phase of anticipation! May I ask the ballpark asking prices of the timepieces made by Sylvain?
