The death of the night club

We were playing cards at a friends place yesterday...he has a bunch of 70's stereo stuff he buys to fix being a retired EE. In keeping with the 70;s theme he was playing Supertramp Breakfast in America which sounded so good through old Analog phono....we were talking about clubbing back 40- 50 years ago vs today, I was shocked because I have not been in a night club in over 30 years. He said his son tells him that you have to buy a table? WTH? which can cost up to 1k plus drinks....easy can run up your AMEX or Visa card to 2k for one night.
I thought my God I was lucky to get a free Miller Light in my day.
He said COVID killed the clubs plus everybody is broke from skyhigh rent.
His son showed up to watch a football game and I was talking to him about it...
The women today expect you to have some Lambo ,Ferrari, or 100k car which is easy to do these days.... plus spend thousands on them.....that's why he goes to see his dad eat a pizza and watch football on the W-E....spends no money and has a better time.
I told his father you have a great son....if my son was still alive I wish he would have been like him.

I remember the days well.

In nyc clubs died in 1997.

That is when we experienced a rise in the lounge type setting. SoHo was the destination for Those lounges and I was a fixture :).

The norm became Roped off areas with bottle service and overpriced drinks using the next greatest vodka claim (a story unto itself) and the elimination of the dance floor.

Thinking about it, I understand. Why run a club with a dance floor …
if you’re dancing your not drinking. Also a larger space requirement.

Previously I had enjoyed the best dance clubs in the nyc and honestly miss them even now. “Ten eighteen” and johnny rockets were my favorite.

No loss IMHO. I never met a woman worth knowing in one and alcohol was always overpriced and made in somebody's bathtub.
Nowdays they are just a convenient place to buy drugs.

From my understanding they are still popular in university towns. But probably not like the 70s.

I was at a nightclub on halloween to meet some friends. Brought back some memories. Definitely a young persons game.

Worked as a bouncer for about two years in my mid 20’s. Ruined clubs for me because on the rare times I wanted to go out I’d end up running into people I’d 86’d and have drama, or jump into a fight to help the bouncers at whatever spot we were at because we all sorta knew each other and no bouncer wants to watch another guy doing your same job take a beating while you just stand there.

Europe still has discotechs where you can dance, but again, you take your chances with the fringes of society there in certain clubs or certain areas. Choose wisely. I'm in my 40's and too busy working to go dancing. On my days off I'm recovering from long 12 hour shifts.

I was in Fort Worth some friends recently and we walked through Billy Bob’s. As it was 2 pm the place was shut down but you could go in just to see it. The place advertises itself as the largest honky-tonk in the world, and I can see why. It’s absolutely massive.

My wife and I got married very young, and we were never part of that type of scene. Not sure we missed much.

I remember the clubs from the late 70'-90's. A lot of drinking, a lot of drugs, a lot of smoking tobacco and a more open outlook on sex and other indulgences. Before the age to get in was 21 me and my friends would go and many times when I was 15-17. It was mind blowing to think that young people, I would say kids, but some might not like that word, were out partying at such a young age. I can remember being 13-15 and a friend the same age would pick us up in a car that he took from his parents, unknown to them, and off we went for a night of clubing. My, how the world has changed.

Oh forgot to mention among the greatest clubs in the world was Paradise Garage with DJ Larry Lavan. The party didn’t start til 4am. The sound system was epic.

The death of the night club

I’d imagine they are still prevalent in places like Miami, New York, and LA. But not so much around where I live. I’m in a touristy area, too. I suppose there might be some, but it doesn’t seem that way. There are plenty of bars with live bands, but I don’t think that fits into the category of “clubbing.”

Be careful out there.

Instead of clubbing, you're doing right by enhancing your home audio system. Lots of great hi-res lossless streaming music on Qobuz and vinyl LPs to enjoy

Dive bars are way more fun, and the people are generally nicer there. This has always been my scene. In my younger days I found my self in a rave or two, honestly I always had fun but mostly just wanted to go home and chill.

Never was a fan of the nightclub scene. Too crowded, too many people bumping into me spilling drinks, and the music was … well … that annoying club stuff (I know, I know to each their own).

I was a pub guy back in the day and I guess old habits die hard because I still am. Give me my space at the bar or a stand up table, play some music where I can understand the lyrics, or better yet a band with a blues vibe or maybe an acoustic set etc. A friendly bartender, a pint of Guinness, or whatever is decent on tap, with wings, a burger or maybe fish’n chips. Much more my style.

Carry on

I don't remember ever being in a "nightclub". We had bars (in hotels because they were the only ones who could sell booze) with bands and mainly on weekends but nothing like the big city bar/dance clubs of the Studio 54 genre.

I did work in a Cheers type bar/restaurant in LA for a few years in the 80s but that was bands some nights, magicians some nights, Monday Night Football, and just a bar/restaurant the rest of the time.

Things change with time, of course. If you question the viability of clubs in 2024, have a look at the Miami scene. Thriving.

Back in 1988, my bride and I, as a blind double date, went to a nightclub in downtown Providence RI called Sh-Booms. It was a retro 50's diner themed place with the front of 50's cars mounted on the walls and trunks of 50's cars made into couches. The DJ blasted typical 50's music and there was a back lot where you could take your drink outside and smoke, get some air or talk without yelling without really leaving the club. For a country guy that was some pretty neat, big city stuff.
The place was only around for a few years but it had done its job and my wife and I remember it fondly.

Different generation but living on the Canadian border my friends and I went to clubs in Niagara Falls Canada when were were 16-17 with fake, borrowed or chalked IDs. Imagine a bunch of 16 years olds rolling into the sundowner already half a case of labatt deep and 4 clubs/bars in stoned lol

Good times. Imagine kids now trying to pull this off with border security and parents tracking them lol

I always hated bottle service as I never drank liquor or champagne out until later in life when I settled down with my wife and those damn prohibition speakeasy bars were all the rage. I drank a lot of cheap beer and passed on all the rounds of shots. It was my secret to never losing control in a town where bars didn’t get busy until midnight and closed at 4.

As an officially retired Bar Star since 2006, the art of talking, approaching and closing the deal….these kids today have no idea how we rolled. Those were precious times for us. No social media whatsoever. We could hide when we wanted to hide.

It's an interesting topic, until now I thought it was a local problem in Hungary. According to them, it seems that something has completely changed in the world.

I’m guessing younger people are drinking less and probably don’t see the logic in spending Vegas prices at some crappy bar with a couch when they can do that at home for 20 bucks.
