Just curious, but why all the hype
over the 5711 or 57 whatever. I don't see it myself. You wonder why; availability, price, discount. I just see a feeding frenzy. I didn't know that PP was in competition with other mfgs of sports/diving watches. Dive computers are the standard diving, depth, time tell alls. My 3520DR from 1990 is an exquisitely beautiful, in its simplicity, timepiece. In rose gold and a white enamel dial, hour and minute hands only, no second hand or date mar the dial. If the 57-- series is your thing, go for it, but remember what PP stands for in the watch world.

There’s a lot of hype and hype is contagious. But if you break through the hype the 5711 and 5712 are both fantastic watches. So a lot of the hype is for real.

Well you like basically the contrary of what most clients want nowadays; dress piece, small diameter, if that is your thing great, I never liked those types of watches, always liked sport models, and got my 57-- before the hype, basically the 57-- models are the best sporty watches on bracelet, with a few from AP, if you like sport watches they are the best you can get, I don't think its a hype as they were in demand before, maybe with social media more people got to know their existence, but they are in demand as they are clearly great watches, people don't want dress pieces, especially ones very small, I wouldn't even wear a small Calatrava to be honest

Totally agree. Looking forward to trading my 5711 for one next year. Cash to me of course.

There was a massive surge in demand for watches last year and they focussed on certain models, the 5711 being one of the primary ones, and once prices started to move up, momentum and greedy greys and speculators have kept them rising like in any bull market.

The popularity of the Nautilus due to it's potential value is one thing. But it doesn't distract from the fact that the watch itself is gorgeous. I don't quite understand the hype too earlier one. It's something that gradually grow on me until I got one.
But after owning one, I start to.

While I agree that the prices are stupid crazy, I do see their place in the market. I also see how they represent PP in the watch world through beauty and quality. Not all of us want to wear a Rolex. PP has had to evolve to appeal to current tastes... You can even see it with their latest 42mm releases of the Aquanaut in gold and the recent chrono... Just look at AP, its synonymous with the Royal Oak. If Patek only sold 3520DR's it would be out of business.

I still don't believe all the hype around the 5711. I've seen and handled it a few times, had the opportunity to buy both white and blue dials 2 years ago at MSRP and passed.
In contrast, I've lusted for a 5712 for more than a year, and when I finally got it in hand, it is living up fully to my expectations. The hype is real on that one. The moonphase, PR, microrotor all scream classic Patek to me while being packaged in a classy, yet sporty case. I still wouldn't have paid more than MSRP for it though... the price is already very steep for a SS watch IMO. |

the hype is real. Just look at whenever patek tries to modify the original. 5726 or 5990 or 5980. All beautiful watches but the purists tend to think they stray too far from the original and still revert back to the 5711. Its really a no win as old ideas are actually preventing the evolution.
the 12 gets a pass because of its uniqueness and its slim case like the 5711 IMO.

At the end of the day it's just a watch.
Buy it and enjoy it if it is within your budget, or skip it otherwise and get an alternative. The resale value or hype should not affect how we feel about our watch when we put it on our wrist. |

You need to see the movement and a rotor hides too much. You can always get a B&Z winder if you need to keep it wound. |

Well maybe the reason for the hype / demand goes something like this:
Imagine the situation where a non watch enthusiast, but someone who enjoys the finer things in life goes to his Patek AD to treat himself to a new watch: Customer: I’m looking for a new watch and would like the one Brad Pitt has. AD: You mean the Nautilus 5711? Customer: Yes, the Nautilus. Do you have one? AD: I’m sorry sir, that model has a 5 year wait, but I can add you to the list. Customer: No, 5 years is too long. Can I get one used? AD: On the grey market you will pay double the retail price sir? Is there anything else you like? Customer: Well that blue one in the display is nice. AD: A lovely choice sir. That’s a 5327 perpetual calendar. That’s £67k. Customer: Wow, that’s three times the price of the Nautilus. What does it do? AD: Well, it will tell you what month it is, if it’s morning / night, the moon phase and if it’s a leap year. Customer: Er, OK......I was expecting more for that price. AD: Sir, with this piece you don’t need to correct the date, it’s all done automatically. Customer: I don’t really mind changing the date, it’s only every couple of months anyway, but OK. I normally wear my Rolex at the weekend for swimming, going to the gym and taking my kids to the playground. I assume this Perpetual Calendar is OK for all those activities. AD: No sir, I would stick to the Rolex for weekend wear. The Nautilus would be fine though as it’s our sports line. Customer: OK, but I never need to change the date with the perpetual calendar? AD: You will need to change the date on a Monday as the power reserve will have run out over the weekend. Customer: Right....... AD: You can of course get a watch winder. Customer: No, put me on the list for the Nautilus. |

More hype in US (maybe due to rappers demand) but not so much in Asia, probably cause we got one ages ago.
